Democrats beat the Republicans 22-0 in the Congressional Baseball Game

Jun 14, 2013, 3:52 PM EDT

Republican and Democrat symbols

The Democrats beat the Republicans 22-0 in yesterday’s Congressional baseball game. Karl Rove and the people at Gallup still think the Republicans still have a chance, however.

Team Blue was paced by Rep. Cedric Richmond (D-LA), who tossed seven shutout innings. The Donkeys have won five straight. I’m sure they benefitted from their scouting program. Indeed, I hear their intelligence gathering is top notch. The Republicans, meanwhile, are far more geared for the Congressional football and basketball games where their keep away skills and ability to run out the clock are unsurpassed.

A recap of the game from CSNWashington.com:

  1. specialkindofstupid - Jun 14, 2013 at 3:57 PM

    Is this real life?

    • Caught Looking - Jun 14, 2013 at 4:32 PM

The result shouldn’t be that surprising. The Republican’s refused to turn left on the basepath.

      • sabatimus - Jun 14, 2013 at 6:23 PM

        Hahaha very very well played.

  2. goskinsvt - Jun 14, 2013 at 3:58 PM

I’m sure there will be an abundance of rational discussion in the comments section.

    • heyblueyoustink - Jun 14, 2013 at 4:02 PM

      I wouldn’t bet on that.

      • historiophiliac - Jun 14, 2013 at 4:06 PM

        Booo!

        /throws peanuts

  3. mvp43 - Jun 14, 2013 at 4:05 PM

Obviously the Dems had surveillance photos of the Rep’s practice.

  4. jlovenotjlo - Jun 14, 2013 at 4:06 PM

    I’m blaming the age difference

  5. nygf - Jun 14, 2013 at 4:08 PM

Good for them. Glad to see they’re not doing something really outrageous like, I don’t know, using their positions in the government to make this country a better place to live for more people.

  6. kcroyal - Jun 14, 2013 at 4:09 PM

Haven’t seen a blow out this bad since the ’12 elections.

  7. mybrunoblog - Jun 14, 2013 at 4:09 PM

Democrats won because the IRS kept score.

  8. stlouis1baseball - Jun 14, 2013 at 4:10 PM

Of course they beat them like a borrowed Mule.
They heard every single call made to and from the bullpen. They also stole the damn signs coming from the dugout and the 3rd Base Coach. Unethical bastards…

    RAGE!

  9. sdelmonte - Jun 14, 2013 at 4:12 PM

Any chance we can see similar coverage of the annual Marvel-DC softball game?

  10. approvenothing - Jun 14, 2013 at 4:14 PM

Rumors are that the Democrats had seized Republican emails detailing their game plan. Fox is flipping out. No one else really cares. Who will remember this besides the tea party in a week anyway?

  11. barrywhererufrom - Jun 14, 2013 at 4:16 PM

As the country burns..we get this..

    • dluxxx - Jun 14, 2013 at 4:19 PM

      Oh the humanity!

    • 18thstreet - Jun 14, 2013 at 4:47 PM

Yes, can you imagine? A few hours in the evening once a year for a social event?

It’s the end, I tells ya.

    • nothanksimdriving123 - Jun 14, 2013 at 6:43 PM

PS, Barry, I’ve seen Obama’s real birth certificate by the way, and he is from Norway! I’ve also seen his bar mitzvah pictures, so, no, he’s not Muslim.

  12. hansob - Jun 14, 2013 at 4:16 PM

The GOP needs to go C. Montgomery Burns on this thing and run Roger Clemens in one of the Texas districts.

    • dluxxx - Jun 14, 2013 at 4:18 PM

They aren’t booing you. They’re cheering! Boooooouurrns!

    • alexo0 - Jun 14, 2013 at 4:58 PM

They should probably avoid running Steve Sax in NYC though. His mouth tends to get him in trouble there.

  13. historiophiliac - Jun 14, 2013 at 4:20 PM

Wow, hands down, these are the worst jokes of the day. Stick to baseball, people, and don’t quit your day jobs.

    • dluxxx - Jun 14, 2013 at 4:28 PM

Half of these people aren’t joking.

      • historiophiliac - Jun 14, 2013 at 4:31 PM

I know, and their comments don’t even make sense. It’s sad.

      • dluxxx - Jun 14, 2013 at 4:41 PM

I actually stink some of the screen names are funnier…

      • historiophiliac - Jun 14, 2013 at 4:43 PM

I agree with phew on that.

      • dluxxx - Jun 14, 2013 at 5:02 PM

I think there was a typo in there.

I actually stink. Some of the screen names are funnier…

        Fixed it.

      • historiophiliac - Jun 14, 2013 at 5:07 PM

Too funky. Glad you caught it.

    • stlouis1baseball - Jun 14, 2013 at 4:30 PM

      Yeah…who’s joking?

      • historiophiliac - Jun 14, 2013 at 4:34 PM

Ok, I’m including you in that. Your comment made no sense. You should’ve just typed: “I hate Democrats,” and left it at that.

      • heyblueyoustink - Jun 14, 2013 at 4:44 PM

        I hate fringes.

    • stlouis1baseball - Jun 14, 2013 at 4:58 PM

I assumed you were including me Philiac. You don’t expect that to bother me do you?
It is apparent you haven’t watched ANY news coverage from any medium over the last Month…two Months huh?
You should have just typed…”I hate any jokes that make fun of Democrats” and left it at that.

      • historiophiliac - Jun 14, 2013 at 5:04 PM

I love jokes that make fun of Democrats. What are you talking about? And, I have watched the news recently, but apparently, you haven’t watched it for the last 12 years. I didn’t even understand what you were talking about with the “borrowed Mule” thing. And neither side is ethical. You just wanted to rage and people who agree with your political orientation will thumb you up. I just didn’t find it particularly funny.

      • yahmule - Jun 14, 2013 at 5:07 PM

        Beat politicians, not mules.

      • dluxxx - Jun 14, 2013 at 5:07 PM

I kinda found the one about the IRS keeping score pretty funny, but for some reason I always see the /s font when someone ends a post with RAGE! That was what you were going for, right?

      • historiophiliac - Jun 14, 2013 at 5:10 PM

The one about the IRS keeping score made no sense. Is there a deal about them messing up math?

      • dluxxx - Jun 14, 2013 at 5:18 PM

Only Republican math, from the news stories. Keep in mind I read each of these comments with a large grain of salt (and a beer today, because we have beer Friday at work).

      • historiophiliac - Jun 14, 2013 at 5:35 PM

Wait, beer Friday. Is Minnesota Nirvana?

    • stlouis1baseball - Jun 14, 2013 at 5:13 PM

No…there isn’t an issue with them messing up Math.
But that is probably debatable itself huh? lol!

There is very much an issue with them targeting conservative based political organizations.
So it stands to reason…if they did keep score they would NOT be favoring the right.

      • historiophiliac - Jun 14, 2013 at 5:17 PM

Except they withheld non-profit status from a liberal group. Do you only read biased news? That would’ve worked better as an umpiring joke (you know, maybe conferring replays for every Republican at bat or something), instead of a scoring one.

    • stlouis1baseball - Jun 14, 2013 at 5:21 PM

Biased news? I try to take every source with a grain of salt.
Even the most liberal organizations are on them about it Philiac.

“Except they withheld non-profit status from a liberal group.”
Riiight. You got me. Yes…there most definitely was one or two they did this to.

      Come on…

  14. eightyraw - Jun 14, 2013 at 4:23 PM

Cedric Richmond played baseball for Morehouse College and is doesn’t turn 40 until September. He could dominate this game for years, especially since it looks like Ron Paul did not pass along his home run stroke to his son.

  15. Craig Calcaterra - Jun 14, 2013 at 4:24 PM

Everyone saying “they should be doing something worthwhile instead of baseball” should know that the game raises a couple hundred thousand for charity.

    • historiophiliac - Jun 14, 2013 at 4:37 PM

I’m personally affronted by the suggestion that baseball isn’t worthwhile.

    • hansob - Jun 14, 2013 at 4:37 PM

      Here’s the rosters:

      http://www.congressionalbaseball.org/teams.html

Apparently, the GOP is the party of “no” until it comes to cutting down the roster.

      • nothanksimdriving123 - Jun 14, 2013 at 6:52 PM

A quick scan and I see one woman on the Dems and none on the larger GOP team. Hmmm.

      • jwbiii - Jun 15, 2013 at 1:38 AM

And Linda Sanchez hit a solid single.

    • churchoftheperpetuallyoutraged - Jun 14, 2013 at 4:56 PM

Not to be the Devil’s Advocate, but have some of y’all been reading/watching what our Congress(wo)men have been doing lately? Do we really want them spending more time screwing things up?

Maybe a break will actually get them back to their senses?

    • dluxxx - Jun 14, 2013 at 5:01 PM

Oh come on Craig! Now you’re being a killjoy. I was enjoying the show!

  16. necr0philia - Jun 14, 2013 at 4:29 PM

This Country has no meaning to it anymore. Sounds like a good time to move to Iran!

    • realgone2 - Jun 14, 2013 at 4:32 PM

      I’ll buy your ticket

  17. stlouis1baseball - Jun 14, 2013 at 4:31 PM

“Sounds like a good time to move to Iran!”

    Said the person named…Necr0philia.

    • historiophiliac - Jun 14, 2013 at 4:42 PM

I’m sure he’ll love it there. The punishment for necrophilia is what? Oh. Good luck with that, dude.

      • stlouis1baseball - Jun 14, 2013 at 5:10 PM

You have never heard someone say…”they beat them like a borrowed mule?”
And you live in Oklahoma? And have family in Texas? You know…out west?
Don’t mistake the “mule” as a word I chose for political reasons. I use the term frequently.
Hell…I used it in a post a day or two ago.
The Democrats beat them down…22-0. Beat them like a “borrowed mule.”

Everthing else…yes…political. You know…the bullpen “phone.” “Stealing” signs.
Does the AP “phone” tapping issue mean anything to you?
You can’t NOT be aware of that. I mean…you can claim ignorance all you want but I know you made the connection.

      • historiophiliac - Jun 14, 2013 at 5:13 PM

Do you think this is the first time the government has traced phones???? How have you not been angry about this for a long time?

Ahem, my people don’t abuse rentals — you break it, you buy it, hello. Also, go with “jackasses” — that’s what I use.

      • stlouis1baseball - Jun 14, 2013 at 5:16 PM

I have always heard…beat like a borrowed mule.
It rolls off the tongue better than jackasses.
Anywho…I think it is more tongue in cheek (obviously).
As in…the mule isn’t doing what its supposed to. Its a borrowed mule. You aren’t worried about breaking it’s spirit. Just a phrase. One that I can’t believe you haven’t heard before.
I always heard it primarily in the south. Kentucky and Tennessee.
But I did hear it occasionally in Oklahoma when I was in the Army.

      • historiophiliac - Jun 14, 2013 at 5:18 PM

I don’t think we’re so much a mule state. And, NO ONE is dumb enough to try and beat a buffalo. ;)

      • stlouis1baseball - Jun 14, 2013 at 5:17 PM

And…absolutely I think they have tapped phones before. I just haven’t ever known them to step on their penises so badly while doing so. And doing so while trying to squelch the media no less.

      • historiophiliac - Jun 14, 2013 at 5:20 PM

So, you’re mad that they’re bad liars? I’m actually pretty glad these things get out. I think most of the revelations are really just confirmation of things we already knew or should have known.

      • stlouis1baseball - Jun 14, 2013 at 5:23 PM

We are going to have to let this one go.
        Have a good weekend!

      • historiophiliac - Jun 14, 2013 at 5:33 PM

        You too.

      • heyblueyoustink - Jun 14, 2013 at 5:40 PM

Great, now how am I going to be entertained.

      • historiophiliac - Jun 14, 2013 at 5:54 PM

Don’t you have like a million dollars to make exploiting poor people?

      • heyblueyoustink - Jun 14, 2013 at 6:35 PM

Not yet, but when I get to that point, I wonder if the rich guys send you a step by step instruction manual on preferred methods of that very activity?

      • heyblueyoustink - Jun 14, 2013 at 6:36 PM

Maybe with a coupon book or something.

  18. yahmule - Jun 14, 2013 at 4:31 PM

22 runs in seven innings and nobody gets dotted?

  19. realgone2 - Jun 14, 2013 at 4:33 PM

    well it could be worse

  20. realgone2 - Jun 14, 2013 at 4:35 PM

  21. drewzducks - Jun 14, 2013 at 4:44 PM

I’m guessing Sen. Jim Bunning couldn’t get loosened up in the pen.

    • yahmule - Jun 14, 2013 at 4:58 PM

The Republicans don’t want him anywhere near Mitch McConnell when there are bats lying around.

    • eightyraw - Jun 14, 2013 at 5:35 PM

Jim Bunning actually got lit up in his only appearance – 5ER and the loss.

  22. larrymahnken - Jun 14, 2013 at 4:52 PM

If I wanted political commentary, I’d be at Hardball Talk, not HardballTalk.

  23. joeflaccosunibrow - Jun 14, 2013 at 4:54 PM

Naturally the Democrats would win. They are home much younger.

Everybody is born a Democrat. Everyone believes that life should be fair when they are young. After working in the real world and busting your hump, you realize that life is not fair. You must make your “luck”. That’s the moment you become a Republican.

Democrats then tax your “luck” .

    • stlouis1baseball - Jun 14, 2013 at 5:02 PM

      Pffft…Flacco….
Although your post is completely accurate…
you will get NOWHERE with that type of post/attitude on this particular site.
But in relation to your post…I believe it was Churchill who said (and I am paraphrasing)…

“From the ages of 18 – 30 people vote with their hearts. Beyond age 30 and people vote with their brains.”

      • pillowporkers - Jun 14, 2013 at 5:09 PM

        Close. It was:

“A young conservative has no heart, and old liberal has no brain.”

      • yahmule - Jun 14, 2013 at 5:12 PM

Not surprising that one of more brutal imperialists who ever lived would hold that opinion.

      • nworca - Jun 14, 2013 at 6:38 PM

Churchill, when young, was a conservative, he switched to the liberal party in his middle years and then back to the conservatives when the liberals couldn’t get him what he wanted. Basically a political opportunist, I think the more self-explanatory quote from him on his political philosophy is; “anyone can rat, but it takes a certain ingenuity to re-rat.”.

    • kiwicricket - Jun 14, 2013 at 5:12 PM

So and what stage did George Bush have this moment of hump-busting induced realization?

    • albertmn - Jun 14, 2013 at 5:24 PM

flacco – You say that everyone believes life “should” be fair when they are young. Then, they realize it isn’t fair. But, why do so many then have to make the jump to trying to take advantage of others and run them over instead of working to try to actually make life more fair?

Republicans are the bullies of the political world. “Well, if life isn’t fair, I will take my money and influence and screw everyone to keep perpetuating the problem.”

      • dluxxx - Jun 14, 2013 at 5:38 PM

        Well said.

      • joeflaccosunibrow - Jun 16, 2013 at 4:01 PM

If you were making enough money, the wealth “redistribution” is your boy’s Obamas way of being a modern day robin hood. If you had not gotten that illustrious art degree at a University you would be earning enough money to understand. Until then, I hope that box of Ho Ho’s that I paid for, and you bought with government assistance, tastes good.

    • chill1184 - Jun 14, 2013 at 5:31 PM

LMAO Conservatism is no different from liberalism. In reality its red statism vs blue statism, conservatives unfortunately fool people into thinking that their actually interested in liberty which isn’t the case.

  24. sgtr0c - Jun 14, 2013 at 5:11 PM

I was on FB all day, I thought the Republicans won Zing!

  25. thebadguyswon - Jun 14, 2013 at 5:27 PM

HBT would be so much better if Craig kept politics out of it. Can’t you go create a political blog somewhere?

    • historiophiliac - Jun 14, 2013 at 5:59 PM

We’re sorry that the government re-education program forced you to read this post.
