Photo of the Day: wildfire meets high school baseball

Jun 14, 2013, 11:03 AM EDT

There is a pretty horrific wildfire burning in Colorado right now. Peter McEvoy tweeted this picture from just beyond the evacuation zone the other day:

On the one hand: viva life continuing on amidst chaos. On the other: yikes.

Found this via Deadspin, who notes that this game was completed and a second game in the doubleheader went of that night as well.

That’s pretty scary. Should of taken that pic after he had already swung to show where the ball landed.

My wife has family in Colorado Springs. The photos being taken there are scary. Awe inspiring, yes, but scary.

I pray no one else loses their life.

except without the undead and the darkness and misery and mystery box and whatnot.

This is what it looked like out of my window all last summer in the mountains of Idaho. Over 329,000 acres burned. It was crazy!

Wind appears to be blowing out to right.

Obviously, this is unimportant and not even on the radar of Coloradans, with everything that’s going on, but I imagine it would be incredibly difficult to hit with that gray smoke as a backdrop.

Coolpic but would’ve been better to capture a runner being called “Safe!” at home plate. Could have been a nice metaphoric shot.

Not to diminish the seriousness of what’s happening in Colorado, but all I could think of when seeing this picture was “Big deal, it looks like that in the outfield of Comerica Park every time Jose Valverde is warming up in the bullpen.”
