Will Venable’s fantastic catch saves the game for the Padres

Jun 18, 2013, 8:23 AM EDT

Padres’ center fielder Will Venable has an entry for catch of the year. Maybe catch of the past couple of years.

He saved the game in the bottom of the 12th inning in the wee hours this morning, robbing Juan Perez of what would have been a walkoff hit and pushed the game into the 13th where the Padres scored what would be the winning run. Watch and marvel:

That’s the definition of a game saving catch right there.

Ohh Doctor! You can hang a star on that baby! (said Jerry Coleman, somewhere)

Maybe I’m not viewing it correctly, but it seems like Venable did not take a great route and was not running full speed tracking the ball.

It’s very hard to run straight back while keeping your eye on the ball. Unless you’re an owl.

It’s a shame this catch isn’t getting more exposure. Is there a cutoff for Web Gem submissions? Apparently Will didn’t meet the deadline.

East Coast bias at its finest.

Catch of the past couple years? Don’t think so

There’s a lot of real estate out there in center
