New Era to sell a special edition Mariano Rivera cap

Jun 21, 2013, 1:00 PM EDT

Today I received a box:

Inside that box was a cap:

On the side of that cap was a Mariano Rivera commemorative patch:

Then, for the first and last time in my life, I put on a Yankees cap.

These caps are actually pretty cool if Yankees stuff doesn’t bug you. The logo is gold. The patch itself is kinda neat. New Era will make them available to the general public next week. The box, however, won’t be available in stores. I’ll probably put baseball cards in mine. I have no idea if the Yankees will actually wear them at any time this year, but it’d be cool if they did.

Darren Rovell of ESPN posted this pic of a cap he’s apparently received or at least been made privy to. It has the Rivera logo taking the place of the NY. Which seems odd. I can tell you, though, the cap I have sitting right next to me has a regular — albeit gold — interlocking NY on it.

First time in a Yankees Cap reminds me of that great sportscenter ad with David Ortiz and Wally the Green Monster.

When do the Willie Mays edition hats go on sale?

Anyway, the emblem looks like Mariano is running hard to catch a fly ball.

Or… jogging out of the bullpen to come in the game.

We now live in a society that will attempt to commercialize anything. Including, but not limited to, the retirement of a relief pitcher. Where there’s a dollar to be made…….

Anyone ever connected to sports in general but MLB specifically never went broke overestimating fans willingness to piss away money on stupid crap.

If they can sell grass and dirt from the old Yankee Stadium, as well as seats and parts of the wall in the batter’s eye, . why not a Mariano hat? Not that I’d buy one cause that’s just nuts. But, when Steiner collectables gets around to offering up the urinals from the men’s rooms that when I’m buying. Over the years I recycled beer in so many of them the odds are that I’m going to get one I previously used.

I will pick me up a couple of those wicked lids because I want to and not
because I feel any pressure from society.

Like Mo always says, once a Acura, always a Acura…………….

This was just a bad attempt at being funny…. sorry man.

The last New Era hat I pulled from a box looked like this. And I LOVE IT.

    • nolanwiffle - Jun 21, 2013 at 2:35 PM

Why must they put the gigantic New Era logo on the side of the hat like that? Otherwise great looking cap.

    • stlouis1baseball - Jun 21, 2013 at 2:43 PM

      Sharp hat Jonny!

    • indaburg - Jun 21, 2013 at 5:50 PM

      Nice hat!

I like the Mariano hat. The emblem is cool, and you can’t pay enough homage to the guy. I even like the gold NY. Too bad I’d rather pour acid on my head than wear a Yankee cap.

    I don’t remember McKayla Maroney having sideburns…

  5. Al - Jun 21, 2013 at 1:17 PM

    Classic selfie face.

  6. jgreiner9 - Jun 21, 2013 at 1:17 PM

Being a Yankee fan and remember seeing him start his career as a starter-to set up man-all time great closer, I will be getting one!

  7. hojo20 - Jun 21, 2013 at 1:33 PM

Alan Trammell SI cover on the back wall?

    • Craig Calcaterra - Jun 21, 2013 at 2:05 PM

Yep. Along with Aaron, Mays and Dick Allen covers.

  8. Chris Schutte - Jun 21, 2013 at 1:46 PM

Classic Dead Schembechlers gig flyer on your wall. Well played. Almost makes up for that atrocity of a Yankees lid.

  9. brewcrewfan54 - Jun 21, 2013 at 2:02 PM

Man they will use anything to sell more stuff.

  10. randygnyc - Jun 21, 2013 at 2:10 PM

Just walked to the Yankee store on 59th street. They not only don’t have it, but were shocked to hear about it and to see these pics.

    • mybrunoblog - Jun 21, 2013 at 3:49 PM

Cool media folks often get sample items long before they hit the retail shelfs. It makes sense because perhaps a random NBC baseball blogger might post a story about the hats and people will say “Wow those are cool I want one”

    • fanofevilempire - Jun 21, 2013 at 4:26 PM

believe it or not they will probably be the last to get it, too bad you don’t
live in the hood, I bet you could get that at the Korean or Chinese spot.
That’s how you get the MJ’s before the release date.

  11. Innocent Bystander - Jun 21, 2013 at 2:13 PM

…well if you’re not going to wear it, I know a long time reader who would be interested! No, not Old Gator!!!

  12. jayscarpa - Jun 21, 2013 at 2:15 PM

I saw the “Rivera logo taking the place of the NY” cap and yours is a lot nicer.

  13. dluxxx - Jun 21, 2013 at 2:19 PM

“Then, for the first and last time in my life, I put on a Yankees cap.”

I take this to mean that Craig will never wear another hat as long as he shall live…

  14. stevietimmy - Jun 21, 2013 at 2:29 PM

Nice picture. It all makes sense to me now.

  15. 18thstreet - Jun 21, 2013 at 3:45 PM

Ooh, and look at this! We can’t even pay our bills, and Craig Calcaterra is getting free hats and drinking “Royal Crown Cola.”

  16. mudhead123 - Jun 21, 2013 at 5:16 PM

Haha I’m more entertained that this is what he looks like

  17. moogro - Jun 21, 2013 at 10:14 PM

    The logo covers Mo’s ass.
