Rickie Weeks won’t have to worry about more benchings

Three weeks ago the Brewers called up Scooter Gennett and gave him regular playing time at second base in place of the slumping Rickie Weeks.

Gennett started 10 times in a 16-game stretch beginning on June 3, but along the way Weeks caught fire. Weeks is hitting .435 with five homers and a 1.370 OPS this month, making it impossible to continue benching him, and so the Brewers have demoted Gennett back to Triple-A.

I guess if you frame the whole thing as the Brewers wanting to motivate Weeks then calling up Gennett worked perfectly. If you instead frame it as the Brewers thinking Gennett actually gave them a better chance to win than Weeks did, then that wasn’t quite as perfect.

I thought from the beginning that it was just a kick in the ass, and Weeks responded

If we are to assume Weeks caught fire because he was motivated after another 2nd baseman, Scooter Gennett, was promoted to split time with him; it stands to reason Weeks will no longer be motivated now that said 2nd baseman, Scooter Gennett, has been demoted.

The Brewers should have instead kept Scooter around in order to maintain pressure on Weeks. In fact, they should have done more. They should have given Scooter jersey #23 (Weeks’ number). They should have given Scooter Weeks’ locker. They should have got the rest of the Brewers’ players and coaches to constantly talk about what a great guy Scooter is and how good a player he is.

Side note: Scooter is a funny name.

Scooter’s got the best name since Chipper.

I liked Scooter; I thought he would mature into a solid player for the Brewers. The spousal unit hates Rickie Weeks with a passion that he usually saves for the Vikings, and he was thrilled when they called Scooter up from Nashville. But alas, Scooter’s now back with the Sounds and give the Brew Crew a month before they are lamenting what happened to Weeks’ OBP and fielding. Because it will happen.
