Concert-goer says Derek Holland was kicked out of Counting Crows concert for “being really obnoxious”

Jun 28, 2013, 7:10 PM EDT

Craig posted about Rangers lefty Derek Holland‘s adventure at a Counting Crows concert in New Jersey a few days ago. On Twitter, Holland complained about being kicked out for standing up and taking pictures, but a recent article by the Asbury Park Press has quotes from a concert-goer with a different account:

He was thrown out for ruining the show for everyone around him, said Amy Sloane, 40, of Howell, who was sitting in front of Holland.

“He was loud and he had a chip on his shoulder,” said Sloane, who didn’t know that Holland was a pitcher for the Rangers. “He was heckling people around us and talking about the group and just being really obnoxious.”

[...]

About an hour into the Counting Crows set, a young man in front of Sloane asked Holland to quiet down. Words were exchanged, and then security got involved. They escorted Holland out of the venue.

“Everyone clapped,” Sloane said. “They all felt the same way. Finally after that, everyone was dancing and enjoying themselves.

“Everyone was relieved that he was gone.”

Though his concert etiquette may need some work, he is otherwise having a great year. In 16 starts for the Rangers, the 26-year-old has a 3.14 ERA and is one of 13 qualified AL starters with an ERA below 3.50. He signed a five-year, $28.5 million extension with the Rangers in March last year.

He should be suspended for attending a counting crows concert. Douche

Aw c’mon – he was really there for the Wallflowers.

Counting Crows – most pretentious band since the Moody Blues.

He’s a weirdo, wannabe Hipster-type. Glad he lost the kid toucher mustache for the headline pic.

  3. buggieowens - Jun 28, 2013 at 7:17 PM

I’m not sure which is worse: getting kicked out of a concert for being an asshat or willfully going to a Counting Crows show.

    • buggieowens - Jun 28, 2013 at 7:36 PM

Who knew Adam Duritz had multiple WordPress accounts? :P

      • heyblueyoustink - Jun 28, 2013 at 8:21 PM

You should really look into the mental illness he lives with before joking so much. I know a person with the same disorder, and he’ll never be able to handle anything more than being a waiter. It’s sad to see, I give Adam credit for fighting through, and his band mates for understanding his mental state, so that they could all be successful.

      • buggieowens - Jun 28, 2013 at 8:58 PM

Overcoming mental illness is indeed not something to make jokes about, which is why I did not make a joke about his mental illness.

My former next door neighbor obsessiveness with “Mr Jones and Me” back in 1993, however, is fair game.

    • bendover09 - Jun 29, 2013 at 9:51 PM

Everyone who voted down just as much butt hurt as Craig. With Craig great journalist skills he forgot to say how derrek was kicked out … For standing up and taking pictures . Wow. Good job Craig for hating on a young kid who brought up a old record on your yankees .

I really feel deeply for all of those earnest folks who just wanted to groove with Sideshow Adam.

  7. thomas844 - Jun 28, 2013 at 8:01 PM

Was he doing his Harry Caray impression? That alone would be obnoxious enough to warrant him getting kicked out.

Sometimes pitchers get the early hook.

  13. moogro - Jun 28, 2013 at 9:49 PM

That’s what people with no musical taste do. They go to something stupid like a Counting Crows/Wallflowers concert because they think that they should, the lameness sets in, they get bored and frustrated, act out, and then find themselves kicked out. And because they have no taste, instead of tweeting about how boring the music was, they tweet about how boring the people were.

    • unclemosesgreen - Jun 28, 2013 at 10:54 PM

Sure – or maybe it was that or sit around bored. That might have been the best show that night. God. But still.

    • yahmule - Jun 28, 2013 at 10:54 PM

He might just be a dick.

  14. daveitsgood - Jun 28, 2013 at 11:19 PM

I can’t believe that a guy who would wear this http://tinyurl.com/ouxl64r would ever be accused of being obnoxious.

  15. tfbuckfutter - Jun 28, 2013 at 11:53 PM

Places that can be referenced in a story that start with “I got kicked out of” and have that story potentially be potentially badass: Bar, sporting event, school, wedding, elementary school dance recital, funeral, or any concert other than a Counting Crows one.

    • historiophiliac - Jun 28, 2013 at 11:59 PM

      I win: baby shower.

  16. lanjoith - Jun 28, 2013 at 11:59 PM

He may be guilty of being obnoxious and disturbing other people but he didn’t ruin the concert. It was ruined the moment the first note was played.

  17. shawnuel - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:40 AM

Cannot comment on pretentious bands without mentioning the Doors and The Dead. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!

  18. dannymac17 - Jun 29, 2013 at 2:33 AM

how the hell do you get kicked out of a counting crows concert

and secondly. why the hell is he there?

    amazing.

  19. acorp11 - Jun 29, 2013 at 2:33 AM

Oh my, who the hell cares?

  20. Anoesis - Jun 29, 2013 at 4:45 AM

Looks like some of you completely missed the point. So you would never go to a particular band’s concert, that much is obvious. There were people who wanted to see this band and Holland was wrecking the experience for them so he got tossed. A jerk is a jerk, no matter the venue.

Making the act the focal point of your comments just makes you sound like you’re an apologist for his boorish behavior. No, I’m certainly not a fan of this band, but back in the day I listened to, and liked, the Doors, the Grateful Dead, the Moody Blues, etc.

Since when did “Oh, well, that band (car, tv show, sporting event, college major, etc.) sucks so fuck all of them for liking them” become an acceptable expression?

    • abaird2012 - Jun 29, 2013 at 7:54 AM

Yeah. And I LIKE the Wallflowers. There, I said it.

  21. fukpittsburgh - Jun 29, 2013 at 6:36 AM

I’m just trying to picture this whole situation as described by the woman in my head. It’s actually really hilarious.

  22. bbk1000 - Jun 29, 2013 at 6:43 AM

The more important news is that shortly after this concert he won the R.A. Dickey lookalike contest….
