Video: Prince Fielder hits home run off catwalk at Tropicana Field

Jun 29, 2013, 10:06 AM EDT

Tigers slugger Prince Fielder hit a doozy of a home run last night at Tropicana Field. Facing Rays left-hander Cesar Ramos in the top of the eighth inning, he turned on one and launched it off the catwalk in right field.

Now that’s a moonshot. Chris Iott of notes that Fielder is the first player to hit the C-ring catwalk at Tropicana Field since Baltimore’s Chris Davis did it last October 1. The official estimate on Fielder’s blast is 414 feet, which makes you wonder where it would have ended up if the catwalk didn’t get in the way. Miguel Cabrera has one guess.

Fielder said to reporters after the game “On the catwalk, on the catwalk, I shake my little tush on the catwalk”
And somewhere Right Said Fred is smiling

414 feet? That’s just a long fly to CF at Comerica National Park.

That would have gone through the back wall of the stadium if it didn’t hit the catwalk

That ball met a violent and painful death.

Probably merciful, considering how bored and depressed it must have been traveling through the foetid air of the Tropicana Tumulus.

It certainly isn’t telegenic, that park. I get the sense that putting lipstick on the old broad would just heighten her Felliniesque affect.

To paraphrase Tom Waits: ahhh there’s nothing wrong with her that 2 tons of dynamite wouldn’t fix.

I would have loved to hear Ernie Harwell call that shot, “that is LONG GONE!! A young man from Kalamazoo just caught that one on a fly on his back porch.”

Wow. I bet all 236 fans at the Trop really got a kick out of seeing that!

I think they should mount a camera on that catwalk, just for rare occasions like this.
