HBT Daily: Is Baltimore built for the long haul?

Jul 1, 2013, 12:31 PM EDT

April through September? Probably. But what about October.

Also: Yu Darvish is fixed. Was there anything wrong with him in the first place?

Will there be an HBT Daily addressing the fact that Justin Upton is the worst player in MLB since May 1st?

The Orioles need MORE offense? What, an offense that could put up over 7 runs a game on any given night isn’t enough? What possible need could the Orioles have for a better bat at DH or 2B that Chris Davis, Manny Machado, JJ Hardy, Nate McLouth, Adam Jones, and Nick Markakis can’t already provide?

I’d much rather see them land a bonafide #1 starter before the trade deadline than another bat.

What could you get at DH and 2B that those guys don’t already provide? How about, anything? They don’t play DH or 2B.

Increasing run production by bolstering those positions would increase run-differential by exactly as much as reducing runs allowed by an equivalent amount, and could probably be done much more cheaply than by acquiring an “ace.”

The DH position is by far the easiest, cheapest slot to fill with a good hitter.

(If your point is that those hitters could rotate in at DH, the fact is they’re not, the O’s are giving at bats to people like Dickerson and Valencia; and that wouldn’t help at 2B anyway.)

Darvish was temporarily undermined by the mesmerizing gif before it faded from memory. Cuddyer sure has made his swing more compact.

O’s should pickup Soriano from the Cubs, if they can get the Cubs to eat at least have the remaining salary…He’d be a huge upgrade at DH.

I know Flaherty isn’t Robinson Cano, but he’s been playing a pretty good 2nd, and he’s showing some flashes at the plate.

Still would like to see a starting pitcher added. Te other question….is it time to start worrying about Jim Johnson? He looked pretty bad last night (again).

I feel like Buck is going to go toward Patton and O’Day as a set up for Hunter, as the season goes on. He’s not going to give up on Johnson yet- but if he continues to be flakey Buck is not going to play around. He has been grooming Hunter for the closer job much like he groomed Matusz for the set-up job last year. Who knows, I don’t know that much about Baseball but that’s what I think!

Additionally, I agree the O’s need another starter. I think they were hoping Bundy would come on like Machado did last season and be THE GUY but this year isn’t going to be the year
