After missing the past four weeks with a strained calf A.J. Burnett is scheduled to come off the disabled list Sunday, according to Michael Sanserino of the Pittsburgh Post Gazette.

Before the injury Burnett had a 3.12 ERA and 99 strikeouts in 89 innings, giving him a 3.39 ERA in 45 total starts for the Pirates since last season. He’ll face the Cubs in his return and will be doing so without going on a minor-league rehab assignment first, which was apparently Burnett’s call.

So who goes? Cumpton? He’s been good. Plus they have James McDonald and Wandy Rodriguez on the shelf until after the All-Star break. Come August they may have 8 legitimate starters.

Folks, this is the kind of depth you need. This team isn’t going ANYwhere.

Cumpton was only called up to fill in due to Locke warming up for the 14-inning game the day before, and was sent back to Indy already. My guess is that Morton will be the one to lose the starting spot to Burnett, and Cole is safe until Wandy can return.

I don’t think that Cole has been “terrible” the past 2 games, just not what we’ve come to expect from him after an amazing start to his major league career. He’s doing pretty good for someone of his age and experience, really, and even most solid vets have rough patches like he’s had recently.

You are aware that Cumpton was send down after his start and Tabata brought up… Also, I wouldn’t call James McDonald a legitimate starter by any means. The Pirates need to trade for an additional starter almost more than they need a bat. A guy like Bud Norris would be great. It’s funny, I thought Hurdle left Cumpton in too long on Tuesday and then pulled Cole too quickly on Thursday. I wonder if Tuesday’s results affected Thursday decision.

Isn’t facing the Cubs kind of like going out on a minor league rehab assignment?

Cumpton already was demoted to AAA i believe to make room for tabata

Cole better get his act straight or his going down. He has been terrible his past 2 games.

Assuming they aren’t sending Cole back down, I would figure it would be Ryan Reid with Jeanmar Gomez going to the pen.
