Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun reports that the Yankees have claimed first baseman Travis Ishikawa off waivers from the Orioles. Kevin Youkilis (back) was transferred to the 60-day disabled list in a corresponding move to clear a 40-man roster spot.

Ishikawa will meet up with the Yankees on Monday in New York and could see semi-regular action at first base, where Lyle Overbay and his .714 OPS (93 OPS+) have been starting. Ishikawa was batting .316/.413/.525 with seven home runs and 31 RBI in 49 games this season at Triple-A Norfolk before the O’s called him up on June 18. He was designated for assignment on June 29.

Yardbirds couldn’t find a trade partner and were worried this would happen. That said, Ishikawa was given a few weeks to make it work and his bat was non existent. Not a terrible loss to a division rival.

He’d better police up that facial hair, pronto.

Why is Gods name would they want this guy? they have plenty of guys on that team that can’t hit, why add one more?

There are plenty of better players in the minor league or free agency. How about kicking the tires on some forgotten quad-a players like Dallas McPherson, Josh Fields, Mike Jacobs, Kila Ka’aihue or considering bringing back/signing Johnny Damon, Bobby Abreu, Vladimir Guerrero, Jim Thome, Troy Glaus? All of them could be better than Vernon Wells, Overbay, Almonte, David Adams, and Luis Cruz.
