Report: Jeff Francoeur to join the Giants

Jul 9, 2013, 9:08 AM EDT

Ain’t that a daisy?

I’d be inclined to joke that this should fix everything for the Giants, but Brian Sabean and Jeff Francoeur have both made me look foolish for doubting their success — even if I disagree with their methods — in the past.  So let’s just watch this one play out, shall we?

In the meantime:

    With his tWtW added the Giants will now roll to their 3rd championship of the 21st century #fate #grit #willtowin

    Can he pitch?

  3. sdelmonte - Jul 9, 2013 at 9:31 AM

    Well, if he does what he always does on arrival, he will hit the tar out of the ball for six weeks. That might be more than anyone not named Buster is doing.

    • tuberippin - Jul 9, 2013 at 4:09 PM

      I believe they call that “The Frenchy”:

      * Sign with new team
      * Kill it for a few weeks
      * Get a contract for the following season
      * Regress to the mean
      * Be a below-replacement-level outfielder
      * Get cut
      * Repeat

    What a punch to the nuts for Giants fans.

  5. psousa1 - Jul 9, 2013 at 9:33 AM

    Surprised he got waived through the entire AL. Would be a good 4th OF on any team. Will wind up being a low risk and potentially high reward for SF

    • paperlions - Jul 9, 2013 at 9:45 AM

      Huh? For 2 years now, Frenchy has been the worst player in baseball. The majority of AAA OFers would play better in the majors than Frenchy has the last 2 years.

      • Francisco (FC) - Jul 9, 2013 at 9:48 AM

        True, but his PIZZA index is the highest for any MLB player in the same time span.

      • paperlions - Jul 9, 2013 at 9:50 AM

        Indeed. As a person, I love the guy, love his joy and enthusiasm and how he has fun at the park. He’s just not good at baseball (well, compared to MLB players, he’s probably one of the 5000 or so best players on the planet, which is still pretty good).

      • ryanrockzzz - Jul 9, 2013 at 10:49 AM

        This year maybe…but he wasn’t the worst player in baseball last year…he was kind of bad. @psousa1…with is age coupled with his awful season, a younger cheaper minor league option would be better for almost any team than Jeff.

    • geoknows - Jul 9, 2013 at 10:09 AM

      Well, GMs have been known to do some pretty silly things, but any GM who would have been inclined to bite on Francoeur when he was on waivers would also have had to swallow his $3.75 million salary for the rest of the year. Far better to wait until he clears, then sign him, as Sabean did. This way the Royals are picking up the tab.

    Fat Burrel sucked in St Pete for 2 years, then hits like 2003 Fat Burrel with the Giants for a month in 2010 and 2011.

  7. historiophiliac - Jul 9, 2013 at 10:17 AM

    Why isn’t the headline: “Frenchy to Frisco!”?

  8. jayscarpa - Jul 9, 2013 at 10:25 AM

    Good for him – he loves the game. The Giants could do worse.

  9. neoshweaty - Jul 9, 2013 at 10:52 AM

    Hey Craig, could you make the picture a bit smaller? I can see too many details in that one.

    • tuberippin - Jul 9, 2013 at 4:16 PM

      That’s Craig’s wallet-sized copy. The full-size poster copy hangs on the ceiling in his bedroom. We’ll just have to settle, I guess.

    The Giants have been so unsuccessful picking up past their prime veterans for the stretch run the past few years.

    Who cares about winning the World series, we want to look good on paper!

    • thewaddler2013 - Jul 9, 2013 at 8:58 PM

      That’s Right. Picking up Marco Scutaro last year for the stretch drive was so unsuccessful!

      • blabidibla - Jul 11, 2013 at 4:03 PM

        Stupid sarcasm font failed again.

  11. granted42 - Jul 9, 2013 at 8:42 PM

    As a Giants’ fan, this move scares the crud out of me because the team has played such bad baseball lately that this is an upgrade. Maybe it’s time to call Mays out of retirement, that would also be an improvement. 😉
