John Rocker thinks people miss the Steroid Era

John Rocker, you’ll be shocked to know, has said something that most of you won’t agree with. He was on a Cleveland radio station today and said that the Steroid Era gave fans “a better game” and that there wasn’t anything more entertaining than McGwire vs. Sosa and all that jazz:

“Honestly, and this may go against what some people think from an ethical standpoint, I think it was the better game … was there anything more entertaining than 1998 – I don’t care how each man got there – was there anything more entertaining than 1998?…watching Sammy Sosa and Mark McGuire chase 61 home runs? That was a mesmerizing time for every baseball fan out there…the people were getting their money’s worth.”

I’m probably the last guy to get on the “steroids are bad, mmkay” train. But Rocker is just wrong. I mean, yes, there are a lot of people who dug the longball, but from an aesthetic point of view the crazy McGwire-Sosa days were bad baseball. Pitching stunk, defense was way worse than it is now and all of those games that were 7-5 by the third inning were as boring as all get-out.

    Well ,

John Rocker stated his position regarding cheating in baseball . He liked it because cheating was exciting and gave un-fair advantage to un-scrupulous people like himself . The world is full of liars and cheaters Mr. Rocker . As long as there are people , who agree with you , this world will continue to be populated with blood suckers and scammers . Slimmy bunkshooters like yourself need to sink back into their hole and corrode themselves with filth until they dissolve . Good day sir .

Face it, baseball sucks without them. At least roids gave us Roger Clemmons, Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa, Mark McGuire, and A-Rod. Back then it was worth watching.

The freak show is over(for the most part).Defense and pitching are important again….missing the cut off man has consequences, failing to take the extra base can mean a loss….the game back then was indeed boring, fake and distorted……..Home Run Derby was/is not baseball, just hardball masturbation for the PlayStation crowd….

      I could not agree more.

What’s the difference if a guy shoots up pain killers ala Kurt(table for one) Schilling just so he could play or a guy shooting PEDs???

    • grumpyoleman - Jul 11, 2013 at 9:45 AM

Huge differences, pain killers aren’t banned for one. Two, they are allowing you to play close to your natural abilities and not playing above them.

  4. buzzookaman - Jul 11, 2013 at 5:14 AM

To level the plaing field small market teams should be allowed to use PEDs

The location: a conference room at a Cleveland radio station. Two men enter

“I wonder what John Rocker thinks.”
    “Me, too.”

If what Rocker said is true, someone would have revised the old Home Run Derby show from the 50s and just let people watch the best hitters compete head to head on who could hit the most bombs…yet that hasn’t happened.

I kind of agree with him. But that’s because those were my college days, and who doesn’t want to go back to those?

  8. dolphinsruleall - Jul 11, 2013 at 9:55 AM

What a stupid thing for Rocker to say. No sport is better with steroids, because what you’re looking at isn’t an authentic display of human athleticism. When you compromise the integrity of competitive sport, you don’t deserve to play, period. That’s why they’re banned in every sport, numb nuts!

  9. yahmule - Jul 11, 2013 at 10:30 AM

Rocker misses the days of people ignoring abhorrent casual racism, too.

I totally agree with Rocker. The summer of ’98 saved baseball from the disaster that was the 94-95 lockout. And up until a couple years ago the MLB had no problem with the $$$ coming in from exciting baseball during the steroid era.

The current MLB platform doesn’t draw fans 13-35; we’re all waiting for the NFL to start. And that’s a problem for MLB.

I can enjoy a 1-0 pitching duel, but baseball can’t keep up with more exciting sports entertainment in the 21st century. The MLB should embrace some PED use to market the game better. Find a few PED’s that are safe to use, decriminalize their use, and create a better product. From my point of view, its the only way baseball will be relevant in 20 years.

You know he knows nothing because as a pitcher, you should be able to appreciate the beauty of a low scoring game. Rocker indirectly belittles the no-hitter and perfect game with his logic, which should not surprise anyone: John is off his rocker!
Get it: off his rocker! Whadya mean, “no”?
