Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. told MLB.com’s Todd Zolecki that Ryan Howard had successful surgery Wednesday to correct a tear of the left meniscus in the first baseman’s left knee.

“After (Phillies physician Michael) Ciccotti went in there and went in with the scope, it was a little better picture then we thought,” Amaro said. “I think the player is feeling better about it, we’re feeling better about it. As news goes, this is as good as we get.”

Howard is still expected to miss the next 6-8 weeks.

Darin Ruf and John Mayberry Jr. are going to fill in at first base for the Phillies until late August or early September.

“the player” is feeling better about it? Can’t Rube let Ryan’s name cross his lips?

The Big Stiff needs to lose 30 – 40 pounds and maybe his knees and feet will feel better. What ? He has a big contract World Series ring ? Oh well. His bat speed loss and lack of plate discipline are almost as big as conditioning problems. The Big Load has sailed.

Lets not rush him back. Let him take his time we dont need a ineffective Ryan up there swinging or hacking away aimlessly. I think a combo of Ruf, Mayberry and M. Young can hold the fort down.

Just once, I’d like to see a surgery not referred to as “successful”.

“Ryan Howard underwent unsuccessful knee surgery yesterday and required an amputation.”
