Yasiel Puig’s interpreter reprimanded for trying to get a woman’s phone number for Puig

It feels like open season on Yasiel Puig these days. Miguel Montero dumped on him, he was accused of being disrespectful to Luis Gonzalez, he lost the Final Vote to Freddie Freeman and now he’s accused — or rather, his interpreter is accused — of going up into the stands to get a woman’s phone number.

That was reported by ESPNs Pedro Gomez — in the most serious of tones — last night. I get it. I myself am shocked that a young baseball player was scoping women in the crowd too. I wish players these days were more like Mickey Mantle and didn’t do such things.

Wait. Bad example.

Whatever. I do think it’s pretty remarkable how quickly the pile-on Puig has been of late. It’s like everyone is suddenly realizing that A-Rod is going to be gone soon and we’ll need a new villain.

  1. micknangold - Jul 12, 2013 at 9:32 AM

    Except A Rod deserves it.

  2. drewzducks - Jul 12, 2013 at 9:36 AM

Well he is gonna have some free time on his hands next week.

  3. skinsfanwill - Jul 12, 2013 at 9:36 AM

I know why, because their preseason darlings haven’t amounted to zhit. (Wil Myers etc) He may be from Cuba, but his skin is still dark. Deny it if you want to, but that’s exactly what it is.

    • yahmule - Jul 12, 2013 at 10:16 AM

There is no doubt it plays a factor. Add in the language barrier and the fact that he’s a bit of a hot dog and he ticks a lot of boxes for some folks.

Is there anything liberals don’t find racist?

    • stlouis1baseball - Jul 12, 2013 at 3:13 PM

      Race baiter…

      • jimeejohnson - Jul 13, 2013 at 11:11 AM

Thank you StLouis. You are a fair and consistent Conservative.

  4. skinsfanwill - Jul 12, 2013 at 9:39 AM

Ryan Braun is a POS too! He is the worst of all the worst PED users. At least Melky took his responsibility. Braun was given a break and continued using.

    • blabidibla - Jul 12, 2013 at 9:51 AM

      Melky took responsibility?

Yes, after being accused, denying it, creating a fake website to defraud his employer, getting suspsended, leaving his team without an explanation or even saying goodbye…he took responsibility.

      • yahmule - Jul 12, 2013 at 10:08 AM

When you phrase it like that it sounds less honorable.

  6. a125125125 - Jul 12, 2013 at 9:46 AM

First intelligent thing Craig has ever written. Congratulations on this breakthrough.

    • jm91rs - Jul 12, 2013 at 9:55 AM

And still you comment only on stories written by Craig so that you can take shots at him.

  7. aceshigh11 - Jul 12, 2013 at 9:53 AM

It’s amazing how quickly people want to tear down their heroes.

A young, famous athlete with money wants to get laid in his off time. The HORROR.

    • yahmule - Jul 12, 2013 at 10:05 AM

Wait just one minute. Are you suggesting Puig intended to have sex with that woman?!?

I feel sick. I need to go over to the Derek Jeter thread for some wholesome values.

      • skids003 - Jul 12, 2013 at 10:15 AM

It depends on your definition of the what the word “is” is.

    • historiophiliac - Jul 12, 2013 at 10:14 AM

I know, right. At least he isn’t using PED’s like Crush Davis.

      /jk

      • yahmule - Jul 12, 2013 at 10:19 AM

Probably using Cuban PED’s from Castro’s personal stock.

      • historiophiliac - Jul 12, 2013 at 10:21 AM

True story: Castro has been dead for years. They just keep animating his shell to punk OG.

      • thinkfirstthenspeak - Jul 12, 2013 at 11:00 AM

I think they were doing that with Dick Clark every New Years for decades before he died.

Completely immature. Miguel Montero throws scuffed balls to the ladies.

  10. heyblueyoustink - Jul 12, 2013 at 10:07 AM

As long as this kind of thing doesn’t end up with some weird girls tied up in a hotel room and robbery something or other incident, I don’t see a problem.

    • historiophiliac - Jul 12, 2013 at 10:14 AM

      Hello, weird boy.

      • churchoftheperpetuallyoutraged - Jul 12, 2013 at 10:34 AM

I don’t see anything weird about it.
        Sincerely,
        Aroldis Chapman

    • chacochicken - Jul 12, 2013 at 10:32 AM

As an anthropologist one picks up on unusual and unique cultural institutions and genetic bottle-necking. Cuba has Caribbean socialism, island gigantism, and peculiar mating rituals.

      • heyblueyoustink - Jul 12, 2013 at 10:51 AM

As a side note, if you haven’t seen “Juan of the Dead”, I highly reccomend it. I think the chicken would enjoy.

    • jm91rs - Jul 12, 2013 at 11:05 AM

Of course that girl somehow manage to tie herself up and steal a bunch of Chapman’s stuff in the process. Crazy stuff.

        And yet…no charges where filed?

  11. historiophiliac - Jul 12, 2013 at 10:09 AM

Just to piss off the white trash losers.

  15. ramrene - Jul 12, 2013 at 10:36 AM

    Lesson to Craig…

A baseball player asking for a woman’s phone number at a game is not a story. It’s happening every day at every stadium. It’s common.

That you’re pointing it out because it’s Puig makes you an opportunist and the lowest level of media scum. If you don’t believe me why didn’t you put up this story yesterday or the day before that or the day before that when it was happening elsewhere in MLB involving different players?

The only reason you’re trying to make something out of nothing is because Puig’s name is attached and you’re trying to ride that horse as long as you can.

    You sir, are an @ssh#le.

And I mean that in the kindest way.

    • churchoftheperpetuallyoutraged - Jul 12, 2013 at 10:39 AM

      Lesson to ramrene -

Craig is mocking Pedro Gomez for this “non story”. Reread the article, specifically the second paragraph with the Mantle quip. Get it now?

      • historiophiliac - Jul 12, 2013 at 10:43 AM

        What is this “reading”?

      • dcarroll73 - Jul 12, 2013 at 1:22 PM

Maybe if you used a hickory stick he’d get it?

    • yahmule - Jul 12, 2013 at 10:42 AM

In the time it took you to type all that, you might have read the original post more closely and realized Craig’s position is sympathetic to Puig.

      • number42is1 - Jul 12, 2013 at 11:40 AM

Sounds like a product jeter would offer the day after, puig in a gift basket.

  19. thinkfirstthenspeak - Jul 12, 2013 at 11:02 AM

Apparently all you have to do is go to a hospital in Vegas if you’re a ballplayer.

  20. sincitybonobo - Jul 12, 2013 at 11:09 AM

Since when is c-blocking part of stadium security’s job description? This has gone on every day since professional baseball has been played. Road beef is a major perk for players. Puig is single, but even if he weren’t, let the players do their thing. If I’m a visiting player at Chase Field, do I now have to worry about an employee of a team’s security force dedicated to shining a light on a something that has been kept backstage by club officials? Do DBacks ever ask for chicks’ numbers on the road? Would they be ok if Dodger Stadium developed an anti-road beef detail? Very weak, Dbacks. Get your overzealous employee in line.

    • historiophiliac - Jul 12, 2013 at 11:30 AM

Oh, with a classy vocabulary like that, I’m sure you don’t have to worry about the getting blocked part. I’m guessing you *need* a wingman.

    • stlouis1baseball - Jul 12, 2013 at 3:22 PM

Are you seriously referring to hooking up with a lady as “beef?” “Beef” is the word you use?
Scoring some “beef?” Dude…say it out loud. “I scored some beef.”

      See?

      • sincitybonobo - Jul 12, 2013 at 8:48 PM

It’s a baseball term. Google it. Road beef.

  21. andreweac - Jul 12, 2013 at 11:20 AM

Not this site yet the negative publicity towards Puig does have a racist smell.

    • skids003 - Jul 12, 2013 at 11:52 AM

You don’t think it could possibly be some of the things he’s done in the last month? Such as staaring down catchers, ignoring veterans, a little fracas with the law? Generally acting like a jerk?

      • yahmule - Jul 12, 2013 at 1:05 PM

I think it is partially his attitude, partially his “otherness” and partially ESPN burnout backlash. Apparently, those hacks have turned Puig into MLB Tebow. I take this on hearsay since I find watching ESPN about productive as watching MTV.

      • yahmule - Jul 12, 2013 at 1:07 PM

Let’s clarify “staring down catchers” to staring down a guy who has been a chippy prick towards him from day one.

      • skids003 - Jul 12, 2013 at 1:56 PM

I agree, it’s probably all of that. And if I had to pick between watching MTV or ESPN, I would watch Oprah or Jerry Springer.

      • stlouis1baseball - Jul 12, 2013 at 3:28 PM

Now way Skids. It is always racial. Always.

  22. rcali - Jul 12, 2013 at 11:26 AM

That’s a cuban clown question bro.

  23. girlsknowsportstoo - Jul 12, 2013 at 11:44 AM

I don’t like the stories I am hearing about this guy, but this is commonplace. I have season tix and there have been times when friends of players, who are sitting in the stands, have asked me and my friends to meet up with the guys after the games. This momo was stupid and got caught.

    • blacksables - Jul 12, 2013 at 12:39 PM

Yeah, except this isn’t a friend of the player. It’s his interpreter, a team employee. Asking women for their number at work. This all kinds of wrong.

Add in the fact that they have finally let interpreters into the dugouts for the first time this year (which is something the players and manager have been fighting for for years) and this makes everyone look bad.

He is supposed to be there to help the player to score during the game, not afterwards.
