Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer Press is reporting that the Twins are refusing to discuss a contract extension with first baseman Justin Morneau until after the July 31 trade deadline. The 39-53 Twins are looking to trade the 32-year-old, who is earning $14 million in the final year of a six-year, $80 million contract. Berardino writes that Morneau’s representatives approached the Twins in the past week to talk contract extension, but were rebuffed.

Twins GM Terry Ryan said, “I don’t think it’s very smart for me to get into Morneau’s contract. I’m keeping all options open.”

Morneau is hitting .268 with seven home runs and a .727 OPS this season, mediocre numbers from a first baseman. His current .400 slugging percentage would be a career-low among the nine seasons in which he has accrued at least 300 plate appearances.

There is no reason to extend him, much less bring him back if he is not traded. the twins are full of corner outfielder/1b players.

should’ve shipped him out years ago. would’ve saved us $40 Million. The Pohlads are among the worst owners in baseball. Thank God we have a great GM. just think what we could do if we had owners who spent money on the team. 3-4 years, we’ll have Buxton and Sano as well as our 2 pitching prospects. Until then, the twins won’t see a dime from me.

He hasn’t played well enough after the concussion that any other team would have taken him. And, prior to the concussion, he might have been on pace for another MVP season, so you wouldn’t have traded him then. Glad your hindsight is 20/20.

Um, you think your GM is great? Seriously? I don’t even know where to start with how terrible the Twin’s management team has been, the list is very very long and goes back more than a decade.

    Wrong.

Morneau will be a Twin next year even if he is traded unless he signs with Toronto. So why sign him now, when you can receive a prospect for nothing.

Morneau doesn’t want Toronto. He is from Vancouver, which is a helluva lot closer to Seattle.

ndnut, morneau had an interview with hazel may last week stating he loves toronto but didnt want to say if he would sign there until season ended, if they jays want him he will go there
