We’re soon to be underway here at Citi Field. For those of you who missed it yesterday, here are your starting lineups for tonight’s Midsummer Classic.

  AMERICAN LEAGUE NATIONAL LEAGUE

3. Miguel Cabrera, 3B 3. Joey Votto, 1B
4. Chris Davis, 1B 4. David Wright, 3B

8. Joe Mauer, C 8. Michael Cuddyer, DH

Of course there will be substitutions like crazy and as such, for those of you scoring at home, don’t. You’ll go mad with confusion.

But do plan on using this post as a catch-all comments thread for the game.  And of course we will be updating throughout the night as the game goes on.

Matt Carpenter of the St. Louis Cardinals has been designated the National League’s “re-entry” player in case of emergency. Can’t find info on AL re-entry player, but would be interesting if they ever had to use this contingency plan.

  2. historiophiliac - Jul 16, 2013 at 8:37 PM

    NL hitless in 1st!

    • heyblueyoustink - Jul 16, 2013 at 8:51 PM

C’mon, Cano gets a fastball off the knee and you don’t go all “doom!” …….. Who’s being no fun now?

      • historiophiliac - Jul 16, 2013 at 9:01 PM

I was eating. You read my mind. I was just about to say: C’mon, Doom! Don’t ruin it for the rest of us! >:(

      • heyblueyoustink - Jul 16, 2013 at 9:11 PM

And I’m not even watching the game ;-)

Viva la twitter. I loathe any kind of all star game personally, but I love what the NBA and NHL does with the kills competition, and how the NFL used to have the QB skills competition.

I would love to see that in baseball. Much more entertaining, just my humble opinion. Imagine the fun of a pitcher’s location contest, or put markers in the outfield to aim for hitter’s contest. Now *that* would be awesome.

      • heyblueyoustink - Jul 16, 2013 at 9:12 PM

Skills, not kills. We don’t need any kind of Urbina contest.

      • historiophiliac - Jul 16, 2013 at 9:17 PM

        ZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

I would find that boring. The drama is doing it under pressure.

      • heyblueyoustink - Jul 16, 2013 at 9:31 PM

That’s what the playoffs are for, silly!

      • historiophiliac - Jul 16, 2013 at 9:57 PM

        *All-Star games

        FTFY :P

  3. brewcrewfan54 - Jul 16, 2013 at 8:38 PM

I’m at a bar drinking and don’t give a shit who wins because my team doesn’t matter anymore this year. I also have USA Gold Cup soccer to watch. Yay.

    • historiophiliac - Jul 16, 2013 at 9:02 PM

Get a designated driver, honey. And homer up for your NL. Geez.

      • brewcrewfan54 - Jul 16, 2013 at 9:32 PM

Don’t worry I’m only 4 blocks from home, easily walkable. And I’d prefer the NL but if they lose, oh well. Bring on the 2nd half!!

    • jwbiii - Jul 16, 2013 at 9:05 PM

Who is the US playing? I watched them beat Costa Rica in March. In a bar in Costa Rica. My wife and I were not popular.

      • heyblueyoustink - Jul 16, 2013 at 9:14 PM

Futbol, where own goals come with erious consequences. ( aka beheading )

      • brewcrewfan54 - Jul 16, 2013 at 9:15 PM

Ha! Surprisingly enough Costa Rica again. I’ve cheered for the Brewers in bars outside of Wrigley and I imagine you were way less popular than me in that situation.

      • jwbiii - Jul 16, 2013 at 9:25 PM

Plus there was the language barrier, which was actually kind of fun. The game was in Denver. It was snowing. Sample conversation:

        En nevada? Es loco!
No. Ellos en Denver. Denver es en Colorado. Las Vegas es en Nevada.

I think my US geography lesson had no effect. But there were many Ticos in Denver, no doubt freezing their asses off. We all stood and cheered when they were on camera.

      • brewcrewfan54 - Jul 16, 2013 at 9:29 PM

It probably didn’t help that they didn’t know what that weird white shit falling from the sky was and why the ball quit moving when they kicked it.

      • jwbiii - Jul 16, 2013 at 10:20 PM

It was more about why the players skidded an extra meter after they stopped and fear that someone would get hurt.

      • jwbiii - Jul 17, 2013 at 11:18 AM

Here is a photo of the bar we were in. They have phone numbers and e-mail and such, but they don’t do street names and address numbers. Notice that the location listed is 200 m. east of the city park. On which street? Have fun!

      • jwbiii - Jul 17, 2013 at 11:21 AM

        Eh, here is the photo

  4. steelers88 - Jul 16, 2013 at 9:08 PM

This game is gonna end up 0-0 in extra innings.

  5. cardsfaninvegas - Jul 16, 2013 at 9:12 PM

NL didn’t bring their sticks! Really need to pick it up.

  6. steelers88 - Jul 16, 2013 at 9:17 PM

The NL needs Brandon Inge to break up the perfect game.

  7. historiophiliac - Jul 16, 2013 at 9:19 PM

    Miggy!

    • proudlycanadian - Jul 16, 2013 at 9:30 PM

      With a couple of assists.

      • historiophiliac - Jul 16, 2013 at 9:30 PM

        Thanks, Canada!

      • proudlycanadian - Jul 16, 2013 at 9:32 PM

You are welcome. Votto and Davis also had a hand in it.

      • historiophiliac - Jul 16, 2013 at 9:43 PM

Do you think we should thank them? ;)

      • proudlycanadian - Jul 16, 2013 at 9:45 PM

Sure. Votto is from Toronto and almost caught that hit by Davis. If he had caught it, he probably have doubled off Miggy.

  8. steelers88 - Jul 16, 2013 at 9:28 PM

    Woo Cutch is in!

  9. steelers88 - Jul 16, 2013 at 9:33 PM

Not this fucking Chevy commercial again! Never buying a Chevy.

  10. steelers88 - Jul 16, 2013 at 9:56 PM

Sucks Cliff Lee is throwing this game because he wants home field advantage with the AL team he will eventually be traded to.

  11. steelers88 - Jul 16, 2013 at 10:09 PM

Here comes the part where we all get to hear about what a great story the Pittsburgh Pirates are.

  12. janessa31888 - Jul 16, 2013 at 10:16 PM

As someone who enjoys baseball cards, I bought a couple packs today hoping to get some All -Stars. Lo and behold, I got Matt Harvey! Underneath it in the pack was a very frightening image of Jonathan Papelbon, who looked like he was about to devour someones brain.

    • historiophiliac - Jul 16, 2013 at 10:22 PM

Was it the Body Image pic? :)

  13. historiophiliac - Jul 16, 2013 at 10:21 PM

Damn, Marc Anthony can sing. He even makes that inane blusterfuck sound lovely.

    • proudlycanadian - Jul 16, 2013 at 10:55 PM

I agree with the “inane blusterfuck” part.

    • unclemosesgreen - Jul 17, 2013 at 8:51 AM

Unfortunately he still hasn’t hired me as his personal carrier.

      • historiophiliac - Jul 17, 2013 at 9:13 AM

Your wicked height might frighten him.

      • unclemosesgreen - Jul 17, 2013 at 3:11 PM

Nah – probably my wicked awesomeness

  14. whmiv21 - Jul 16, 2013 at 10:26 PM

Manny Machado just made a heckuva play.

    • proudlycanadian - Jul 16, 2013 at 10:56 PM

      He is a great fielder.

  15. steelers88 - Jul 16, 2013 at 10:39 PM

These past two all star games have been unbelievably boring.

  16. American of African Descent - Jul 16, 2013 at 11:03 PM

Why didn’t Rivera get the 9th?

    • stlouis1baseball - Jul 17, 2013 at 9:24 AM

      AOAD:
I didn’t quite understand the way in which Leyland used him either.
They kept referring to the possibility of not having the opportunity to use him in the 9th (should the AL blow the save). As if they couldn’t have brought him in during the 8th (if necessary). Which is precisely what they did. I must be missing something cause’ Buck and McCarver seemed to think it made perfect sense.

  17. janessa31888 - Jul 16, 2013 at 11:06 PM

Kipnis!!!! :-) AL player of the month for June gets an RBI double.

  18. steelers88 - Jul 17, 2013 at 9:38 AM

    Well that ASG SUCKED!
