UPDATE: Rangers “getting closer” to deal for Cubs’ Matt Garza

Jul 18, 2013, 6:50 PM EDT

Matt Garza has been on an impressive roll of late, winning five straight starts while posting a 1.24 ERA and 38/10 K/BB ratio over his last six. While we still have a little under two weeks to go before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline, ESPN’s Buster Olney reports that the Cubs want to strike while the iron is hot.

Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports and Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports also hear that the Rangers are involved in talks for Garza. In fact, Rosenthal and Morosi are reporting that the Rangers are “most motivated” of any of the teams in the mix. The Dodgers, Red Sox, Cardinals, Indians, and Diamondbacks are among the other clubs who have expressed interest.

Garza is currently slated to make his next start on Monday against the Diamondbacks, so if Olney’s source is to be believed, we could see a resolution within the next couple of days.

UPDATE: FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal hears from one official involved in talks between the Cubs and Rangers that a deal is getting closer. Prospects from various levels are being discussed and Rosenthal writes that Mike Olt is “possibly” involved.

UPDATE II: Rosenthal hears from sources that prospect right-hander C.J. Edwards is also in play in talks for Garza. The 21-year-old has a 1.83 ERA and 122/34 K/BB ratio over 93 1/3 innings in 18 starts this season with Class A Hickory.

Angela need to make a move and get Blanton outta there.

    • paperlions - Jul 18, 2013 at 7:17 PM

The Angels are 9 games out of a playoff spot and have a horribly depleted farm system.

      • churchoftheperpetuallyoutraged - Jul 18, 2013 at 9:01 PM

Remember that guy who was telling us the Angels would be the best team in the league, and well all ask with what pitching? He hasn’t been around lately…

    • bigmeechy74 - Jul 18, 2013 at 10:43 PM

Who is she? And if she has the power to trade Blanton, what the hell does that have to do with garza? And who are you? weirdo

Boston Red Sox: We’ll pass on this sure to be an overpriced rental player

Theo and Jed can go pilfer some other team.

    • proudlycanadian - Jul 18, 2013 at 7:41 PM

I understand that the best offer from the Red Sox is still Bard and Bailey.

      • turdfurgerson68 - Jul 18, 2013 at 9:02 PM

Boston is offering Bard and Bailey for Garza?

Guess who won’t be coming to pitch for da Sox, ha ha.

Theo wants a (minor) kings ranson; he won’t get it from Ben.

      • drewzducks - Jul 18, 2013 at 10:57 PM

And the Jaybirds are offering Ricky Romero and Josh BP Johnson.

  3. Sports King of this world - Jul 18, 2013 at 7:19 PM

Dang how many times is this dude going to get moved. I mean, is it really worth the hassle?

    • biasedhomer - Jul 18, 2013 at 9:38 PM

What do you mean? He was traded as a prospect for Delmon Young. He was then traded in typical Rays fashion (while his stock is high and before he is a free agent or at a high salary). And now the rebuilding Cubs are trading him to a contender.

Why the Cubs traded for him really doesn’t make sense since they were going to go nowhere, and Chris Archer is already up in the majors and is doing an amazing job.

      • Sports King of this world - Jul 18, 2013 at 9:42 PM

My point exactly. Why is it that he aways in trading talks and he’s so good.

    • biasedhomer - Jul 18, 2013 at 10:20 PM

He was traded for Young because he was a highly touted prospect and Young was supposed to be a budding superstar.
The Rays traded him just like they traded away Shields. It doesn’t mean he was bad.
And now he is being traded because the Cubs don’t want to lose him for nothing and they aren’t going to resign him since they are going with a youth movement.

      • Sports King of this world - Jul 18, 2013 at 10:53 PM

He should have better agent. He’s too talented for this

  4. 1943mrmojorisin1971 - Jul 18, 2013 at 8:07 PM

No doubt the Sox would like to have a guy they know can pitch in the AL East, but I have a feeling they won’t want to one-up the Texas offer. I can see the Rangers overpaying here.

  5. heyblueyoustink - Jul 18, 2013 at 8:09 PM

Can I get him for a pepperoni pizza and some wings?

    • proudlycanadian - Jul 18, 2013 at 8:19 PM

The Jays would throw in a case of Labatt’s Blue.

      • dondada10 - Jul 18, 2013 at 8:24 PM

I would wash my face with Labatt’s Blue. There’s one beer that I can never find on tap in the city.

I used to demolish 18 packs of that shit while an undergrad at Syracuse.

      • proudlycanadian - Jul 18, 2013 at 8:35 PM

I did drink it when I was much younger, but have graduated to better stuff.

      • turdfurgerson68 - Jul 18, 2013 at 9:04 PM

Labatts is brewed in the USA.

Msybe some fine Molsen Canadian for him?

      • proudlycanadian - Jul 18, 2013 at 9:11 PM

Labatt’s used to own the Jay’s. A few years after a foreign brewer bought Labatt’s the team was sold to Rogers. Molson’s has always been associated with the Montreal Canadien’s.

      I’m upping the anty:

A bottle of single malt scotch, 12 year with an option for a 16 year based off of performance.

      • proudlycanadian - Jul 18, 2013 at 10:00 PM

I up you a case of fine Canadian Ice Wine.

  6. docboss - Jul 18, 2013 at 8:50 PM

Rangers need to load up for series against Cards.

    • carpi2 - Jul 18, 2013 at 9:24 PM

I believe the Rangers might have to worry about the Tigers before they can begin to think any series against the Cards.

      • cohnjusack - Jul 19, 2013 at 12:53 PM

I think Oakland and not being forced into a one-game wildcard playoff is actually a concern before Detroit. Or the fact that they’re only 3 teams are within 1.5 games of each other for two wild card spots.

  7. steelers88 - Jul 18, 2013 at 9:32 PM

I wouldn’t my favorite team the Pittsburgh Pirates to trade for a Matt Garza I wouldn’t to give up a top hitting prospect or pitching prospect for a rental player. The Rangers can have him.

  8. 13arod - Jul 18, 2013 at 9:49 PM

If i was texas i would not trade olt for a 2 month rental

  9. 13arod - Jul 18, 2013 at 9:49 PM

Sports King of this worldonly 3 times hes been traded

  10. royalintx - Jul 18, 2013 at 10:22 PM

If Olt is center of the deal, Rangers should do it. Olt will never hit in majors. He is AAAA.

  11. sdeberg - Jul 19, 2013 at 12:36 AM

Just a question – why don’t the Cubs actually BUILD around the guy? Another statement – OK not a question – if this must happen, ANYBODY but the Cards or the Red Sox. Cubs have had such a good record of “rebuilding”, or with their farm system. From a probably former Cubs fan…good luck.

    • vapor54 - Jul 19, 2013 at 8:09 AM

I wonder how much rope the Cubs have given Theo

    • 84cubs - Jul 19, 2013 at 8:01 PM

When was the last time the Cubs organization used the word “rebuilding”? That’s right, not in your lifetime. The Cubs have: 1) new ownership and 2) new President and GM. If thats the kind of fan you are, then its best that you become an EX-FAN as opposed to a “probably former fan”. I want to hear from people like you when the Cubs win it all. Will you then jump back on the wagon?

  12. 18thstreet - Jul 19, 2013 at 7:55 AM

    Mike Olt!

  13. steelers88 - Jul 19, 2013 at 8:14 AM

Like I said earlier it’s not worth giving up your future for a 2 month rental player.

  14. unclemosesgreen - Jul 19, 2013 at 8:24 AM

So now where’s all that Texas swagger and huffery and puffery over “We’re not gonna baby our pitchers.” Cuz you know what I see? I see 6 out of 9 starting pitchers on the DL. Is that normal?

  15. 4d3fect - Jul 19, 2013 at 12:29 PM

Former (well, briefly anyway) SLO Blues member!

Hope he does well for himself.

  16. psousa1 - Jul 19, 2013 at 2:04 PM

Please. How about last year when, on this site, it was reported that “Ryan Dempster is already on a plane to Los Angeles to join the Dodgers”.

    He went to Texas.

Garza will land with the Dodgers.

  17. wpjohnson - Jul 19, 2013 at 2:15 PM

The Rangers climb was greatly aided by the Teixeira trade. The Braves have suffered. The Rangers don’t need to pull a stupid trade like the Braves to get Garza. Garza won’t guarantee a division crown any more than did Teixeira.
