Great Moments in Bush League Promotions: Skydiver takes out shortstop

Jul 22, 2013, 9:49 AM EDT

In his defense, it’s possible that the shortstop was trying to turn the double play and the skydiver was merely playing hard-nosed baseball.

Per the Daily News, this took place down in the Summer Prospect League. The shortstop plays for the Hannibal Cavemen. Which is a fantastic mascot, by the way. The skydiver was unharmed. The shortstop got a gash on his head but is doing OK too.

To quote former Phillies Pres Bill Giles “Generally speaking, a dead body is not a good omen for the start of a baseball season.”

    Kiteman lives!

The Hannibal Caveman are called such because Hannibal’s claim to fame was that it was the home town of Mark Twain, and the nearby cave (now called “Mark Twain cave”) was very accurately described in “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer”(called McDougles Cave” in the book). They give tours of the cave but describing scenes in Tom Sawyer. It easily ranks as the top tourist attraction of Northeastern Missouri, ranking ahead of other activities such as staring at all the soybeans and counting the meth-heads.

So, really, they’re mascot should be Mark Twain. Better yet, Mark Twain dressed as a caveman.

Looks like Jose Reyes wasn’t the only shortstop in for a surprise yesterday!

I love cartoonish stereotypes of people, especially in sports. I think we should do it to certain ethnic groups without their input.
