A reminder: Francisco Rodriguez is a worse human being than Ryan Braun

Jul 23, 2013, 10:26 PM EDT

Francisco Rodriguez AP

If you’re an Orioles fan, feel free to root for the laundry. But let’s not celebrate Francisco Rodriguez.

K-Rod was initially arrested in Aug. 2010 after beating up the father of his girlfriend, Daian Pena. Rodriguez assaulted Carlos Pena at Citi Field after a game, punching him in the face. The incident actually left Rodriguez with torn ligaments in his pitching hand, forcing him to miss the rest of the season. The Mets took the incident very seriously, suspending him for two days. Rodriguez later pleaded guilty to assault charges and was sentenced to undergo 52 weeks of anger management. He was also barred from contacting his now ex-girlfriend, and mother of his twins, for two years.

If that was the end of K-Rod’s story, it might be worth forgiving him. However, he was arrested again last September in Wisconsin after he allegedly beat up a new girlfriend (and, again, the mother of his child). Those charges had to be dropped, mostly because the girlfriend and their housekeeper, an eyewitness, both departed for Rodriguez’s native Venezuela before the trial was scheduled to begin and never returned.

According to the prosecutor in the original case, there were also earlier incidents involving Pena, including one that led to her hospitalization in Venezuela.

So, yeah, Rodriguez is a quality reliever and he should fit nicely into a setup role in the Baltimore pen. The Orioles are a better team with him. As a person, though, he’s more worthy of scorn than any steroids user.

“The Mets took the incident very seriously, suspending him for two days.” Do I detect sarcasm?

    • dondada10 - Jul 23, 2013 at 11:00 PM

The Mets let K-Rod pitch after the suspension. It was after that appearance that he disclosed that he was injured. It was after that the Mets felt that they should try to void his contract due to his conduct.

      Meet the Mets.

      • sabatimus - Jul 23, 2013 at 11:31 PM

        I’d rather not, thanks.

    • Kevin S. - Jul 24, 2013 at 6:15 AM

That’s two more games than a DUI suspension.

  2. elwaysagenius - Jul 23, 2013 at 10:31 PM

    Still dislike Braun more.

    • aceshigh11 - Jul 23, 2013 at 10:34 PM

Then you’ve got a seriously busted moral compass, pal.

    • joenash72 - Jul 23, 2013 at 10:38 PM

      Elway may be a genius…..

    • hammyofdoom - Jul 23, 2013 at 11:22 PM

      That’s messed up

  3. Last Road Reviews - Jul 23, 2013 at 10:34 PM

Is this Ryan Braun? He’s a cheat and K-Rod a low life. I’m sick of seeing these Braun posts. He’s a cheater and got caught end of story

    • sabatimus - Jul 23, 2013 at 11:23 PM

Oh, the Braun story is very, very far from over.

  4. skerney - Jul 23, 2013 at 10:37 PM

K-rod is awful. So is Bobby Cox whose wife called the cops because he was beating her. Also Dave Justice threw Halle Berry down the stairs. Go Braves.

  5. sabatimus - Jul 23, 2013 at 10:45 PM

Did Rodriguez lie about any of this?

    • cur68 - Jul 24, 2013 at 12:49 AM

Because lying is WAY worse than serially punching out women, right?

  6. unclemosesgreen - Jul 23, 2013 at 10:45 PM

    100% with you Matthew.

  7. sleepyirv - Jul 23, 2013 at 10:46 PM

    Let’s not be too hasty.

For all we know Ryan Braun turns into a werewolf every night and eats orphans.

    • paperlions - Jul 23, 2013 at 10:57 PM

Eh, nobody wanted those kids anyway.

      • fm31970 - Jul 23, 2013 at 11:17 PM

        Hello, Daddy Warbucks!?!?

      • historiophiliac - Jul 23, 2013 at 11:53 PM

Ahhh, you *are* being funny today.

  8. jayscarpa - Jul 23, 2013 at 10:46 PM

I really dislike this argument. It is a weak fallback for the indefensible. Who is worse – Charles Manson or Joseph Stalin? Very silly..

    • sabatimus - Jul 23, 2013 at 10:50 PM

Um, as far as we know, Braun didn’t engineer murder..

      • deadeyedesign23 - Jul 23, 2013 at 11:55 PM

The point is that K-Rod being a worse person, doesn’t make Ryan Braun a better one.

Braun > K-Rod > Ty Cobb > Charles Manson > Joseph Stalin > Jimmy Buffet

Who cares? It’s creating an argument where there isn’t one.

      • paperlions - Jul 24, 2013 at 7:56 AM

Actually, the point is that the press is over-the-top vilifying Braun and will NEVER not bring up his PED use the rest of his career, while essentially ignoring Lueke’s rape; Rodriguez, Cabrera, and other’s spousal abuses; and a whole hoard of players, managers, and coaches that have been caught driving drunk….all of which are far worse transgressions that taking PEDs and lying about it.

    • aceshigh11 - Jul 23, 2013 at 11:05 PM

It IS silly…it’s not like we’re doing this intellectual exercise to LITERALLY rank how awful certain people are compared to others.

BUT…it does help to put things in perspective. PED users are vilified to the nth degree, and yet domestic abusers, drunk drivers, serial philanderers, racists, homophobes…and in one case, a damned RAPIST…are often given passes by the fans.

As an example…look at Derek Lowe. A fine pitcher who a lot of Red Sox fans look back on fondly for 2004, and are now saluting him as he retires…but he has a SEEDY past.

Because it doesn’t happen on the field, it’s like it doesn’t really count. It’s the difference between loving the game of baseball and trying to protect its reputation from cheats, and really valuing morality in a larger sense.

Ryan Braun’s a cheat and a liar, but I seriously doubt he’s as much of an out-of-control nutbag as K-Rod is in his personal life.

      • sabatimus - Jul 23, 2013 at 11:30 PM

aces, do you know what jayscarpa really meant? I don’t. I just interpreted it at face value. Which was this: he’s comparing Manson to Stalin, one of whom was a serial killer and the other of whom orchestrated the deaths of millions of Russians. Since neither Rodriguez or Braun are murderers, I found the analogy absurd. jayscarpa’s “very silly” I thought was referring to the article itself, the interpretation of which is borne out by the very first sentence of the comment.

      • jayscarpa - Jul 23, 2013 at 11:40 PM

The problem isn’t that PED users are vilified. Using the argument that other moral midgets are not as vilified is unconvincing.

Perspective depends on the view point. Braun’s not a bad guy compared to wife beaters. Compare him to Mo Rivera and he’s pond scum.

I’m a NYY fan. I don’t like Pettite, Alex, et al but when they play I root for them. It doesn’t mean I give them a pass. I can have my opinion about them but it is not for me to judge them.

      • deadeyedesign23 - Jul 24, 2013 at 12:01 AM

Well the difference is that one happens on the field and the other doesn’t. People arguing PED use as a moral issue don’t seem to have it right. I don’t think most people REALLY care about the morality. They care that they want to believe that what they’re watching on the field is “real”. I think most people are either old enough or smart enough to know that players don’t need to be good people also. The difference between Chipper Jones cheating on his wife and Ryan Braun cheating at baseball is that one concerns Jones, his wife and their families, and the other concerns a game I watch, support, and invest in.

  9. watermelon1 - Jul 23, 2013 at 10:46 PM

So it sounds like none of the issues against the females had much proof and was a bunch if he-said. She-said media blown stuff.

And as for a physical altercation with another male? Sounds like there was issues… Not just some random attack. Sounds like both had a part in it.

Sorry… You can make him sound like a murderer, but he’s not. If he went to a team other than orioles would you be trying to make him sound like George Zimmerman?

Orioles made a trade. Nobody said they were getting an angel. And yet you felt the need to bring up Braun in order to take shots at Rodriguez?

What do those two things have to do with each other?

    • tigersfandan - Jul 23, 2013 at 10:48 PM

I must be missing something. What special significance do the Orioles hold?

    • cohnjusack - Jul 23, 2013 at 10:54 PM

So it sounds like none of the issues against the females had much proof and was a bunch if he-said. She-said media blown stuff.

Women. Always lying saying people beat the shit out of them when the never did. Amirght fellas?

      Oh wait, nevermind. Asshole.

    • Reflex - Jul 24, 2013 at 12:38 AM

What. The. Fuck. He has beaten a guy and was charged with assault. He has assaulted women he is dating. The prosecutor said he is a serial offender. His victims flee the country rather than face him in a court of law.

Ugh, people like you make me sick.

  10. brewcrewfan54 - Jul 23, 2013 at 10:49 PM

    Not to baseball fans.

  11. sabatimus - Jul 23, 2013 at 10:55 PM

The reasons people hate Braun more than K-Rod now are: 1) Braun’s stuff is MUCH more recent; 2) Braun’s stuff is probably just the tip of the PED Biogenesis iceberg; 3) Braun came out and blatantly lied to everyone on national television. K-Rod has (had?) serious problems and did things that were terrible, but fans’ emotions aren’t fresh about it. Or maybe they are, now that they’ve read this article.

  12. royalintx - Jul 23, 2013 at 10:56 PM

You guys need to drop it.
    Hardballtalk is becoming a laughingstock.

  13. wheels579 - Jul 23, 2013 at 10:59 PM

Absolutely agree. Add to that DUI convicts who endanger more lives than liars who consume substances which harm only themselves. Easier to find cabs than obscure wellness clinics.

    • sabatimus - Jul 23, 2013 at 11:22 PM

MLB’s DUI stance is a different argument, but the stance is pathetic at the best. As much as I hate Roger Goodell, he at least has the balls to kick people out of the league for a year (cf Donte Stallworth).

      • eightyraw - Jul 23, 2013 at 11:33 PM

Pretty sure that was the manslaughter part of “DUI Manslaughter” not the DUI.

      • yahmule - Jul 24, 2013 at 12:13 AM

Yeah, talk about omitting a small piece of information.

  16. fm31970 - Jul 23, 2013 at 11:19 PM

LIke “Sam” from the DQ commercial, both answers are correct, i.e., both are d-bags. Next topic, please.

    • sabatimus - Jul 23, 2013 at 11:22 PM

      I despise that ad.

  17. bmoreravens1012013 - Jul 23, 2013 at 11:26 PM

Hey, hopefully he turned his life around and starts anew . I just want him to help my team win games and be a good citizen.

  18. jsally430 - Jul 23, 2013 at 11:56 PM

why do you need to dig up dead subjects? what next are we going to start comparing braun to shoeless joe? its getting ridiculous. braun is braun. if you love baseball which I assume you do since you make your living writting about it. move on talk about the bright spots mike trouts still a great baseball player. the astros designated carlos Pena for assignment. but for baseball sake move on and stop bringing up old black eyes.

  19. timb12 - Jul 24, 2013 at 12:42 AM

This just seems like it was done in poor taste. Yeah K-Rod is a bad dude. We can all agree there, but bringing up old stuff to relate it to Braun? I don’t get it. You know who else is worse than Braun? A lot of people. I think we all understand that. That doesn’t mean what he did wasn’t wrong though.

  20. sdemp - Jul 24, 2013 at 1:49 AM

If the father of my girlfriend called my mom a bitch I’d punch him to. . . maybe you wouldn’t.

  21. jrod2go - Jul 24, 2013 at 1:49 AM

There should be more stories about who’s a bigger piece of shit.

  22. louhudson23 - Jul 24, 2013 at 3:06 AM

    Apple…meet Orange….WTF?

  23. cktai - Jul 24, 2013 at 4:23 AM

Hm that is odd, I remember reading from a reliable source that Braun was in fact “baseball’s biggest bipwad”

  24. jimmyt - Jul 24, 2013 at 7:54 AM

And I thought the kids posting over at PFT were in the dark about PED use. The “writers” at HBT are even worse.

  25. pillowporkers - Jul 24, 2013 at 10:02 AM

Is it fair to ask how he keeps getting new gf’s? Not to put the blame on them, but I’d personally try to stay away from guys that have a history of hitting women if I was a girl. Maybe that’s just me though.
