Nah, the A-Rod rhetoric isn’t getting overheated

Jul 24, 2013, 10:32 AM EDT

I mean, all we’re doing, apparently, is calling him a criminal:

source:

And not just one of those “it’s illegal to use steroids without a prescription” criminals. We’re comparing him to actual mass-murdering crime lords:

Whether he realizes it or not, A-Rod is the Whitey Bulger of baseball, the most wanted criminal in the game’s history, more condemned by MLB authorities than Shoeless Joe Jackson and the Black Sox Eight in 1920, Pete Rose in 1989 or Roger Clemens and Barry Bonds in 2008.

Whitey Bulger is on trial for his involvement in 19 murders.

So yes, exactly like A-Rod.

I didn’t read the article; just went to the comments. Craig’s pro-rape?!

        Craig Condonesrapeterra!

        Craig Calca-troll-a

    • stex52 - Jul 24, 2013 at 2:49 PM

You just wait. If A-Rod ever makes it back and can hit an OPS+ over 1.10, there will be sudden stories of him rescuing people from burning cars.

We are such hypocrites about this. The real sin is cheating and not winning when you cheat.

      • stex52 - Jul 24, 2013 at 3:03 PM

Okay, no intentional reference to you-know-what in you-know-what state. This is just about A-Rod and our own fandom.

  2. yahmule - Jul 24, 2013 at 10:36 AM

Can A-Rod account for his whereabouts during those 19 murders?

    • proudlycanadian - Jul 24, 2013 at 10:43 AM

He was out eating kittens when those murders happened

      • heyblueyoustink - Jul 24, 2013 at 11:16 AM

Kittens are truely murderous creatures, though.

      • bigharold - Jul 24, 2013 at 11:16 AM

No, .. he was drowning puppies.

      • yahmule - Jul 24, 2013 at 11:27 AM

You mean the little baby cats! I thought you were talking about some stripper.

      • sabathiawouldbegoodattheeighthtoo - Jul 24, 2013 at 12:50 PM

Did he ever fail a kittens test? Are they on the banned substance list? You can’t just sling these accusations about without hard evidence to back them up. You could tarnish ARod’s legacy…

      • proudlycanadian - Jul 24, 2013 at 1:28 PM

The kitten test is gut wrenching. The results continue to be inside information.

      • Old Gator - Jul 24, 2013 at 1:43 PM

Listen, you can’t beat a big bucket of extra crispy boneless Kitten Delight at a super bowl party. You can’t. Don’t bother to argue about it.

      • proudlycanadian - Jul 24, 2013 at 2:02 PM

No arguments here. Back to an earlier conversation: the Royal Family decided to follow the advice of Johnny Cash in naming their baby. Cash advised “Name him Bill or George! Anything but Sue.” They went with George. NY Yankee fans should be pleased.

      • anxovies - Jul 24, 2013 at 2:06 PM

He doesn’t eat those kittens, he raises them and skins them for their nice, fluffy fur.

    • lessick - Jul 24, 2013 at 11:16 AM

“Can A-Rod account for his whereabouts during those 19 murders?”

Yes, he was in line at Chipotle.

      • heyblueyoustink - Jul 24, 2013 at 11:17 AM

Hmmm, he *might* have been eating kittens in that case.

      • Old Gator - Jul 24, 2013 at 1:44 PM

Is Chipotle a Chinese restaurant? And here I always thought it was a felafel place.

    • spezzabangsmilfs - Jul 24, 2013 at 1:05 PM

      Can Craig?

  3. jarathen - Jul 24, 2013 at 10:37 AM

Even as an analogy it’s pretty thin. A-Rod is just another baseball cheater. They have existed since the dawn of the sport and will continue to do so.

What annoys me is how much people have to have a strident opinion about it all. It simply is. And baseball will punish him for his actions. And maybe he’ll play again. Maybe he won’t. And he probably won’t see Cooperstown. Okay.

    • soxfaninpinstriphell - Jul 24, 2013 at 10:54 AM

OK, he’s no mass murderer, but he’s not just ANOTHER cheater…He is the poster boy of cheaters, he’s a pathological liar, a thief (by stealing millions that are earned under false pretenses), and the only player that could possibly adore his record with the yankees of being paid phenominal sums of cash to do less than nothing at his craft would be Carl Pavano (40 Million plus for throwing less than one games worth of pitches in 4 years).

      • churchoftheperpetuallyoutraged - Jul 24, 2013 at 10:59 AM

and the only player that could possibly adore his record with the yankees of being paid phenominal sums of cash to do less than nothing at his craft would be Carl Pavano (40 Million plus for throwing less than one games worth of pitches in 4 years).

Arod, average of 9 years with the Yanks including his decline phase/injury years – 142 OPS+
Derek Jeter – golden boy who can do no wrong – topped 132 OPS+ once

This is turning into a Jason Giambi situation with people, where they don’t realize how freaking good Arod was.

      • bigharold - Jul 24, 2013 at 11:20 AM

“He is the poster boy of cheaters, he’s a pathological liar, a thief ..”

Yeah, .. ignore those two MVPs

Good thing for you the CBA wouldn’t allow him to devalue his contract to go to the RS. No matter, .. surely you weren’t one of the 60% of the Nation that wanted to throw “No-Ma” overboard for A-Rod.

      • hammyofdoom - Jul 24, 2013 at 12:26 PM

See, its comments like saying that “Arod did nothing” that really makes me pissed at fellow Red Sox fans. You SAW what he did to the friggin’ Red Sox over the years first hand, you saw the MVP’s he earned. Arod was the best shortstop on that team and never should have been moved over to third. Yes, he’s a cheat, yes, he’s a liar. There are Hall of Famers that doctored the ball and used amphetamines but so many of us look at them like “Oh you old coot you” instead of drilling them like we do these guys

      • someguyinva - Jul 24, 2013 at 12:58 PM

        “the poster boy of cheaters”

        So Bonds got Photoshopped out?

    • bigharold - Jul 24, 2013 at 11:26 AM

      jarathen,

A measured reasoned response?? Are you sure you know how things work around here?

      • yahmule - Jul 24, 2013 at 1:04 PM

It throws everything off when people do that.

  4. Stacey - Jul 24, 2013 at 10:37 AM

Bill Madden needs to log off.

  5. El Bravo - Jul 24, 2013 at 10:39 AM

    ARod likes cake.

    • cur68 - Jul 24, 2013 at 10:45 AM

Sure he does. And he gives hundreds of thousands to charity every year, too. Between cake and charity, he has a couple of good points (aside from being pretty damn good at baseball) so he’s not ALL bad.

I hear Jeter is a pie man. Figures.

    • proudlycanadian - Jul 24, 2013 at 10:45 AM

You got it wrong. Arod likes pie especially pies filled with vampire bats.

      • dondada10 - Jul 24, 2013 at 11:43 AM

        Where’s histori?

      • yahmule - Jul 24, 2013 at 1:05 PM

Abducted by A-Rod. The ransom note is on the table.

    • sabathiawouldbegoodattheeighthtoo - Jul 24, 2013 at 12:52 PM

This goes too far. Slander the man all you want about his drugs and his women and his mirrors, but how DARE you accuse another human being of liking cake?!?

  6. lazlosother - Jul 24, 2013 at 10:40 AM

And now the next guy will have to outdo Madden. We should start a pool for who he’ll be compared to next. My vote is for Pol Pot, because playing baseball is totally equivilant to mass murder.

    • mattjg - Jul 24, 2013 at 10:51 AM

“If the Yankees are the Evil Empire, and George Steinbrenner was their Vladimir Ilyich Lenin, that leaves only one man fit to play the role of dictator and mass murderer Joseph Stalin: Alex Rodriguez.”

    • bigharold - Jul 24, 2013 at 11:22 AM

“And now the next guy will have to outdo Madden.”

      Paging Mike Lupica!!!

  7. mattjg - Jul 24, 2013 at 10:44 AM

Madden inadvertently makes a good point in that quote. A-Rod is more condemned by MLB authorities than those who committed equal or worse transgressions. Of course Madden’s takeaway is inexplicably that this is how things should be since Rodriguez had the gall to defend himself instead of the more sane revelation that maybe Bud Selig is a little too gung-hoe in his crusade to punish those who make him look bad.

    • Kevin S. - Jul 24, 2013 at 10:50 AM

Since we’re all about comparisons now, when is Howie Spira coming up? Because what baseball’s doing now is actually comparable to what George did over twenty years ago.

      • churchoftheperpetuallyoutraged - Jul 24, 2013 at 11:01 AM

So am I reading this right? MLB wants to suspend Arod even further than the PED allegations because he apparently tried to buy evidence from Porter Fischer? MLB has this evidence because they…bought it from Porter Fischer…

      • bigharold - Jul 24, 2013 at 11:36 AM

“MLB wants to suspend Arod even further than the PED allegations because he apparently tried to buy evidence from Porter Fischer?”

From what I’ve read A-Rod refused to buy the evidence.

And, to Kevin’s point, MLB is doing exactly what George Steinbrenner did in the 90s, only worse. GMSIII, paid a dirt bag to get dirt on Dave Winfield. MLB coerced dirt bags to get dirt on players, .. and subverted the civil court system to do it.

  8. southofheaven81 - Jul 24, 2013 at 10:49 AM

    So…if A-Rod…weighs as much…as a duck…he’s made out of wood!

    And therefore…?

    A WITCH!!!! BURRRRRN HIM!!!!!!

    • chadjones27 - Jul 24, 2013 at 11:43 AM

      You win!

    • sabathiawouldbegoodattheeighthtoo - Jul 24, 2013 at 12:56 PM

      It was a fair crop.

  9. rightherenow123 - Jul 24, 2013 at 10:59 AM

I guess he doesn’t much like Arod. I mean, they guy is pretty evil. He did take steroids. The NJ police also took tax payer funded steroids, but they get to keep their jobs…but Arod is a bad man

    • yahmule - Jul 24, 2013 at 1:07 PM

But the criminals are on steroids. Johnny simply wants a level playing field.

  10. droogleeddie - Jul 24, 2013 at 11:01 AM

Normally when you point out these crazy analogies, Craig, I agree they lean extreme. However, in this case are they not comparing the vigor with which MLB is pursuing A-Rod, and how it compares to the pursuit of Whitey Bulger, and not directly comparing the offenses? The article seems to support this.

  11. jayscarpa - Jul 24, 2013 at 11:01 AM

Crappy analogy. And he’s also wrong. Bad piece by Madden

  12. tbutler704 - Jul 24, 2013 at 11:13 AM

Alex Rodriguez is a terrorist. Send him to Gitmo forever.

  13. luz56 - Jul 24, 2013 at 11:18 AM

Please just go away ARoid…. You are a liar and a cheat. You are talented but I don’t know how talented you really were without enhancement…I saw you play in Calgary in the late 80s… As a young one you had this aura about you and you surrounded yourself with punks and thugs… Show me your friends and I will see your future.. Talented yes.. Stupid yes… Liar and cheat HELL YES.

    • southofheaven81 - Jul 24, 2013 at 11:25 AM

“As a young one you had this aura about you…”

Ah, the sad lament of the wounded heart.

The Force was strong in that one.

  14. therealtrenches - Jul 24, 2013 at 11:32 AM

Idiots like Madden screw up the discourse with hyperbolic crap like this.

Now anybody who wants to condemn A-Rod (and he should not escape criticism) sounds like they’re part of a witch hunt. And anyone who wants to claim that Madden is over the top, sounds like they’re defending A-Rod.

All we’re doing now (and it started with the “Ryan Braun is not Lance Armstrong” post) is talking about how to talk about these guys. And in the process, we’re missing the big picture.

    • chadjones27 - Jul 24, 2013 at 11:46 AM

      And the big picture is?

      • yahmule - Jul 24, 2013 at 1:09 PM

30X40 inches. Better use the stud finder.

  15. chip56 - Jul 24, 2013 at 11:42 AM

Yes Craig – why that’s exactly what Madden was doing – equating lying and cheating with the crimes committed by Bulger – you’re so smart to call him out on it.

You know what’s worse than comments like Madden’s people who take comments like Madden’s literally to prove a point rather than in the spirit in which they are quite obviously meant.

No one is saying that Alex has done anything on the level of Bulger – what Madden was saying is that, in the context of baseball, Alex is now America’s Most Wanted. What really pisses me off though is that I’m pretty sure Craig is savvy enough to get that, but far be it for that intellect to get in the way of a good narrative.

    • churchoftheperpetuallyoutraged - Jul 24, 2013 at 12:21 PM

Except even that analogy and explanation doesn’t hold water. Josh Leuke raped a woman. Matt Bush, after multiple DUIs, almost killed a man, Pete Rose bet on baseball, Ty Cobb almost killed a fan AT A GAME(!), Willie Mays and Mickey Mantle were suspended for being involved with a casino, etc.

None of them have ever been compared to a mass murderer.

      • yahmule - Jul 24, 2013 at 1:10 PM

Ty Cobb has been compared to everything and everybody.

  16. rbj1 - Jul 24, 2013 at 11:48 AM

While we’re at it, kick Ty Cobb and Rogers Hornsby out of the Hall of Fame. They cheated by campaigning to keep talented pitchers out of MLB simply on the color of their skin. And kick Willie Mays and Hank Aaron out for using amphetamines which are now also banned by the JDA.

So basically there is no “pure” era of baseball.

  17. bygd1 - Jul 24, 2013 at 11:52 AM

For Once, he should do the right thing and retire from Baselball he is a disgrace

    • sabathiawouldbegoodattheeighthtoo - Jul 24, 2013 at 1:16 PM

Should Braun, and Ortiz, and Pettitte and Brian Roberts and everyone who took ‘greenies’ also quit the game forever? If Selig didn’t have such a hard-on for Arod it would not be a big issue.

  18. wheels579 - Jul 24, 2013 at 12:05 PM

Who would then be A-Rod’s Stephen “The Rifleman” Flemmi? That idiot cousin Yuri the Yanks banished from the clubhouse years ago who also sued him?

  19. chiadam - Jul 24, 2013 at 1:05 PM

Carlos Marmol is that guy from A Bronx Tale that always had to stand in the bathroom.

I feel like this is almost a commentor taking one of your tongue in cheek things as fact and being like “whaaaa?!!!”

Its a metaphor craig…hes saying compared to criminals, this guy wanted for 19 murders is among the worst…and anong the bad guys in baseball, arods among the worst. He in NO way said arod=as bad as murderer…

    • chiadam - Jul 24, 2013 at 1:09 PM

and Rodriguez has a panting in his house of himself with a horse body, so be sort of deserves it.

    • churchoftheperpetuallyoutraged - Jul 24, 2013 at 1:43 PM

See my comment above, the analogy is still shit.

  21. sabathiawouldbegoodattheeighthtoo - Jul 24, 2013 at 1:13 PM

Sooooo…Alfredo Simon shot and killed someone in the DR, then bought off the family to avoid prosecution, and he is OK…no suspension, no damage to reputation done.

Miguel Cabrera gets drunk, gets arrested for threatening his wife the day before a playoff elimination game, gets drunk a year later and threatens to beat up everyone in the bar and blow up the bar, drives around drunk in his SUV and threatens the cops who pull him over, while he swigs out of a bottle in front of them. He is OK, is celebrated as the best guy in baseball and you are likely to get into a bar fight if you tell a sportswriter that there is someone who might be better.

ARod took some drugs a while back in an attempt to play baseball better, and he is the one everyone hates.

    • chiadam - Jul 24, 2013 at 1:17 PM

my name is Alfredo Simon. You killed my father. Prepare to die.
