Quote of the Day II: The Pope wants you to have fun out there, guys

Jul 25, 2013, 10:30 AM EST

Tweets from the Holy See:

That’s well and good, but the Pope has clearly never had anyone try to steal a base on him when they were already up by eight runs. THAT calls for retaliation. An even higher power than the Pope told me that: Tony La Russa.

He probably hasn’t been leg-whipped on his way to tha altar either.

  2. historiophiliac - Jul 25, 2013 at 10:35 AM

Now tell how you were trolling His Holiness on Twitter, Craig.

/ puts tin foil cap on your head :-)

It says ” Though shalt not kill “, not ” Though shalt not pull potenitally deadly pranks ” ;-)

      • historiophiliac - Jul 25, 2013 at 11:33 AM

        You’re goin’ to h-e-double-purgatory-sticks.

      • heyblueyoustink - Jul 25, 2013 at 11:44 AM

My brother says we have property reserved lake front by the lake of fire.

        It sounds nice.

  3. DelawarePhilliesFan - Jul 25, 2013 at 10:39 AM

The Pope. Civil discourse to follow

    • Old Gator - Jul 25, 2013 at 11:17 AM

Yes your Holiness, and may sports also continue to be a progressive counterweight to your and to your Church’s institutionalized homophobia.

      • historiophiliac - Jul 25, 2013 at 11:36 AM

Do you think Sinead is still waiting on an apology from everyone who trashed her SNL protest?

      • asimonetti88 - Jul 25, 2013 at 11:48 AM

It’s sad that people can’t see the truth and wisdom in the statement, even if it is said by someone you may not like. For me, one of the things I love most about sports is the ability to bring people together. Seeing the North and South Korean teams march together under the same flag at the Sydney and Greece Olympics was one of the most inspiring and motivational moments of my life. It is amazing that despite all the turmoil and hatred and violence between those two countries (yes, it originates from their governments, not the people, but that doesn’t matter) that something as simple as sports could bring them together. I hope that in a world full of violence, sports can always be turned to as a haven for peace, friendship and understanding.

@histori – I think Sine-Aid is just happy these days that people have any idea who she is.

Personally, I don’t think people need to apologize for not liking someone – be that Sinbad O’Connor not liking the Pope, or people not liking her.

(hoping somone gets my references to her name….hoping someone picks up on it…..)

      • historiophiliac - Jul 25, 2013 at 11:59 AM

DePhi, that wasn’t just not liking her. People were super-pissed when she tore up that pic of the Pope to protest a pedophilia cover-up, but she was right. They were hating the messenger.

      • Old Gator - Jul 25, 2013 at 11:59 AM

For me, Sinead’s high point was her performance as the shimmering vision of the Virgin in Butcher Boy: “Aw for fooks sake Francey, of kerse your friends like ye!”

      • DelawarePhilliesFan - Jul 25, 2013 at 12:15 PM

@historio – and she was super pissed at the Pope, I am sure you would concur. And people said she should apolgize (when they weren’t saying worse). So I’ll re-phrase: I don’t think people should apologize for being super-pissed at someone.

      • historiophiliac - Jul 25, 2013 at 12:22 PM

I kinda think there’s a substantive difference between being mad at someone and protesting a pedophilia scandal. Clearly, we will have to agree to disagree on that.

      • DelawarePhilliesFan - Jul 25, 2013 at 12:34 PM

@historio – I think people can dislike all that happened around that and still not like Sineaid. Do you believe Lorne Michaels owes her an apology? And if he does not, is he “pro-pedohilia”?

      • historiophiliac - Jul 25, 2013 at 12:54 PM

        Have a nice day. :)

  4. andreweac - Jul 25, 2013 at 10:49 AM

    The Pope endorses grittiness.

    • DelawarePhilliesFan - Jul 25, 2013 at 11:06 AM

      Vade cum Aspritudo

  5. tigersfandan - Jul 25, 2013 at 10:58 AM

The real question is does the Pope prefer pie or cake?

    • proudlycanadian - Jul 25, 2013 at 11:06 AM

Assuming that he is a virgin, I am willing to bet that he does not enjoy cheesecake.

    • heyblueyoustink - Jul 25, 2013 at 11:07 AM

      Wafers, duhhhhhh!

      • historiophiliac - Jul 25, 2013 at 11:49 AM

        Angel food cake.

        bah-dum-bum!

    • slartibartfast4242 - Jul 25, 2013 at 1:05 PM

I’m sure he could do with a good cherry pie… or a cream pie.

  6. anthonyverna - Jul 25, 2013 at 11:07 AM

I wonder if he may have been hinting at how soccer fans act sometimes.

    • Old Gator - Jul 25, 2013 at 11:16 AM

And he’s Brazillian? Now why would he be worried about the behavior of soccer fans?

      • heyblueyoustink - Jul 25, 2013 at 11:18 AM

Only if he scores an own goal or red cards the wrong player will trouble ensue.

      • proudlycanadian - Jul 25, 2013 at 11:21 AM

I thought that he was from Argentina.

      • churchoftheperpetuallyoutraged - Jul 25, 2013 at 11:22 AM

He’s Argentinian, and the tweet was probably in reference to the violence/protests during the Confed Cup, not the behavior of the fans in the stadium.

      • DelawarePhilliesFan - Jul 25, 2013 at 11:22 AM

If by Brazilian, you mean son of Italian immigrants born and raised in Argentina, then yes

      • Old Gator - Jul 25, 2013 at 12:00 PM

Brazil. Argentina. They all look alike to me.

      • Old Gator - Jul 25, 2013 at 12:01 PM

PS – turn on your sarcasm font. There should be a little green squiggle under “Brazillian.”

  7. beelza - Jul 25, 2013 at 11:39 AM

As if the Miguel Cabrera news wasn’t crippling, I get ambushed by a picture of the Holy Father. Please, no more Pope’s in the sports section.

  8. spezzabangsmilfs - Jul 25, 2013 at 11:45 AM

    Too Easy
    Condoms, Gays, Pedophilia cover-ups

May the Church be a means of exchange and growth, never of violence and hate……. for once

    • Old Gator - Jul 25, 2013 at 2:01 PM

I’m going to take a nap in the cryogenics chamber. Wake me up when that happens.

      • spezzabangsmilfs - Jul 25, 2013 at 2:26 PM

Say Hi to Ted for me

    • Old Gator - Jul 25, 2013 at 2:45 PM

Sure. He was just ahead in that other cylinder…

      • spezzabangsmilfs - Jul 25, 2013 at 3:42 PM

He’d still generate a positive WAR today

  9. spezzabangsmilfs - Jul 25, 2013 at 11:59 AM

  10. antaresrex - Jul 25, 2013 at 3:58 PM

“An even higher power than the Pope told me that: Tony La Russa.”

Since when is a Cardinal a higher power than the Pope?
