They’re putting a Waffle House in Turner Field

Jul 25, 2013, 5:44 PM EDT

This is relevant to my interests:

Don’t be a hater. Tell me if there is any better “day game after a night game” ballpark food available, if you know what I mean. I submit there is not.

Well at least there will be no pretensions about terrible food at the ballpark now. And I say that as someone who grew up in the south and has seen some of the worst sanitary conditions ever in a restaurant at multiple Awful Waffles.
I will not be eating there.

      Two of my favorite moments witnessed in my college days from one visit at the Awful Waffle;
      1. Buddy and I with two girls, go to the Awful after bars close. One of them orders a salad but gets no dressing, so asks for some. Waitress places plastic side cup on counter the pulls out institutional size plastic jar of dressing like substance with what looks like two years worth of dried, flaking crust around the rim and pours a nice dollop into the cup with overflow onto counter which waitress then dabs at halfheartedly with brown rag that might have been white at some time in distant past. Girl can’t eat salad at that point.
      2. Cook flipping pork chops, pork chop hits floor. He picks up said pork chop, tosses in trash. Waitress comes by, sees pork chop, dusts pork chop off, puts in napkin, takes to back. We tried to convince ourselves she had a pet.

Seems like Cracker Barrel missed a branding op there (unless they’re at Turner already).

But taking a loaded plate of hash browns back to the seat sounds awesome.

I think only Denny’s can compete for “place where trashed college students go to soak up their booze with greasy, shitty food served by waitresses with track marks.”

    • historiophiliac - Jul 25, 2013 at 6:01 PM

What? You didn’t have a local diner called “Mom’s”? As in: “Gotta go to Mom’s and sober up.”

      • historiophiliac - Jul 26, 2013 at 12:03 AM

No, there seriously was a diner in my college town called “Mom’s” — a hole in the wall greasy spoon.

    Great move. WaHo is awesome.

Eric Clapton once wrote there would be no more tears in heaven.

Rod Beck proved him wrong as soon as he heard this news.

Took my first trip to Turner Field 2 weeks ago when I was in town…aside from being a great looking park on the outside I wasn’t impressed with much of anything on the inside.

A Waffle House kind of captures the Turner Field concession experience perfectly. Everything in the park is really bad, low-end chain food and the beer selection was easily the worst I’ve encountered.

    /end rant.

Craig is rounding up his buddies and will be at your house in like 10 minutes.

    • bravojawja - Jul 26, 2013 at 9:02 AM

I was also at The Ted a couple weeks ago and found great food and adult beverages. You must not have been looking too hard.

      • echech88 - Jul 26, 2013 at 10:20 AM

Different definitions of great apparently. An outsider shouldn’t have to walk around the entire concourse to find something besides Miller Lite and Bud Ice.

      • bravojawja - Jul 26, 2013 at 12:48 PM

Would you prefer a microbrewery at every section entrance?

Actually, I would, too, but it’s not realistic.

  7. steelers88 - Jul 25, 2013 at 6:07 PM

I always hear that the Waffle House isn’t a good restaurant.

  8. laserrocketarm31 - Jul 25, 2013 at 6:08 PM

Wow well whenever I go on my ballpark tour of the country I will not be headed to Atlanta.

  9. chrisdtx - Jul 25, 2013 at 6:17 PM

I agree with you about a great many things, Craig. This is not one of them. Waffle House is gross. One can acquire Type II diabetes by simply breathing the air in one of those joints.

  10. spudchukar - Jul 25, 2013 at 6:30 PM

    Huevos Rancheros at Bandidas.

    Somehow this is not surprise.

C’mon Craig, Waffle House is nothing but a franchised greasy spoon.

  11. APBA Guy - Jul 25, 2013 at 7:35 PM

Well, at the risk of exposing my Southern roots, I have to endorse the notion of a Waffle House at Turner Field.

Look, my nephews all play ball in Florida, they all eat at WH because it’s affordable, they like the food and it’s comfortable for them. So maybe it isn’t the high-end, fine dining experience of garlic fries at AT&T or an Ichi-roll at Safeco. But it fits a portion of the clientele at Turner, so why not?

Am I crazy about it myself? Not really. But I no longer have the capacity to consume huge quantities of cheap calories and not see it around my waist within 30 seconds or less. But once in a while, especially if one of the little monsters is buying, I’m in.

Bad food and gun shots=waffle house

  15. dhalb34 - Jul 25, 2013 at 9:56 PM

Stationed in GA for three years, and every time I left a Waffle House I spent an hour on the john. Terrible.

I have nothing else to contribute but this: http://gawker.com/the-story-of-the-450-pound-rapper-who-loved-waffle-hous-5992463

The Braves wanted to have a fallback position for B.J. Upton since it looks like this whole baseball thing isn’t working out for him. They can now put him to work at the Waffle House and get more return on their investment.

Only if they took uggla as part of a package deal to bus tables.

  18. bravojawja - Jul 26, 2013 at 9:08 AM

This makes me so happy! *dabs eyes*

Y’all just don’t know what’s right in the world.

  19. mc1439 - Jul 26, 2013 at 10:22 AM

I like pooping so I go to da Waffle House!

  20. foreverchipper10 - Jul 26, 2013 at 4:31 PM

All I need is Chick-Fil-A. Lots and lots of Chick-Fil-A. Please don’t let the rumors of one coming to Wilkes-Barre be false. I shall cry 1,000 tears if they are.
