Jose Iglesias made a gorgeous over-the-shoulder catch

Jul 26, 2013, 10:17 PM EDT

Red Sox infielder Jose Iglesias, a maestro defensively, made this play look really easy:

Nice catch. Not enough to erase the effect of the 2 home run by Jones but well deserving of the highlight.

Great catch but at least we got the win!

If he had just gone into the stands to make that catch he’d have earned Gold Glove recognition every year, and MVP consideration for “body of work.”

Still wouldn’t be enough until it was at your biggest rivals park and you come away with blood on your face.

Except for the fact that some guy named Pokey Reese made a very similar play that series, only showing more range. And somehow coming out of the play free from blood, and out of the stands completely.

He can’t just dive into the stands and come out with a scratch for the lifetime gold glove awards. He has to have statue like range, and a jump throw on routine ground balls to make them look tougher.

I love all these threads about the Yankees.

Memories of this play will keep him warm in a few weeks when he’s benched in favor of Bogaerts.

You know, in the Gaylord Perry thread I mentioned how the defense in baseball is light years better than it has ever been. And I specifically said that “The defense is so much better today than it was when I was a kid (I was born in 1975). Those Brooks Robinson highlights that get shown all the time are matched every damn day by third basemen who will be forgotten 10 years from now.”

Just add this play to the exhibit case. The quality of baseball and the skills of the men who play it are better than it has ever been.

If Iglesias could consistently hit he’d be a future all-star.

It’s gonna really suck when Jeter wins the Gold Glove this year.
