Ryan Braun merchandise sales are up since Monday

Jul 26, 2013, 11:03 AM EDT

I don’t know if this a function of an angry populace thumbing its nose at the editorial board of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel and it’s “get rid of Braun” jag or simply a matter of hardcore gangster types having a new anti-hero to celebrate, but it’s interesting:

Wait, no one reads newspapers anymore and Ryan Braun wouldn’t be gangster even if put a hit out on that urine collector. So never mind.

Milwaukee is going to rally around him as some sort of weird team pride thing. ESPN did a state poll about him giving back his MVP award and only Wisconsin said he deserved it.

You can still be a Brewers fan and not love everyone on your team. You can still boo lying, scumbag cheaters…even if ownership values productivity over character. Every team has their sketchy players, you don’t have to like them.

Just as Giants fans still purchased Bonds’ merch, and Dodger fans purchased Gagne’s…

It’s okay as long as it’s your guy I guess.

I’m pretty sure most Brewers fans don’t like Braun. His jersey sales are up for the same reason Aaron Hernandez sales went up (source http://www.bostonglobe.com/metro/2013/06/30/hernandez-memorabilia-brings-big-bucks-online/kE2TXjTfGFjT7DHhFmcqbL/story.html), so they can be destroyed, altered for costumes, or just as items of curiosity. It’s not that surprising.

ESPN polls are good for nothing, but I don’t think anyone should ever have to give up awards because you can’t change history.

Too bad that our society embraces cheats, liars and other lowlife scum of the earth.

You mean like many celebrities, most business leaders and all politicians?

Let’s not forget the pedophile laced Catholic Church……Of which I like to call the only organization that sanctions abuse of children…..

I haven’t gone out and bought more Braun stuff but I’m still going to cheer for the guy when he comes back because he’s paid to entertain me and he’s done a good job of that so far.

I don’t think this is all a matter of “support” for Braun as much as it is a perception that this stuff will have enhanced novelty value somewhere down the line….ha ha ha, how’d you like to buy this mint condition Ryan Braun jersey at a memorabilia show in 2025. I’ve got a complete unopened set of Reservoir Dogs action figures in my closet I plan to leave to my grandchildren, and just ask any hobby shop how Messerschmidt 109 kits outsell P-40 Warhawks. I only wish I had a baseball autographed by Denny McLain.

I wonder if Brewer fans would be as supportive if Braun’s presence would make the difference between making the playoffs and missing it. And I wonder what his (clean) teammates and peers think of him potentially being celebrated.

The resentment over Braun isn’t just because he used steroids, it’s his behavior surrounding the whole thing.

MLB is going to donate all that money to charity right? Cause they’d never suspend a cheatin’ cheater wo cheats & then make a mint off of him, right??

If, as your handle seems to imply, you are also a 32-year-old Slayer fan, we should totally start a club.

  7. timmeh022 - Jul 26, 2013 at 12:56 PM

You’re very hypocritical if you say you shouldn’t support low life scum like Braun. You’ve probably supported so many past baseball greats, and you are naive if you don’t think they took supplements to help their game, and probably support a pro taking PED’s now.

Many people may have thought they would pull them, so they purchased them just in case. As Mark A pointed out, he’s still their best player (assuming he passed his tests in ’12), and in April, he’ll be hitting 3rd and playing LF.

For the same reason that people (other than waitresses) ask Pete Rose questions (other than what he would like for breakfast).

Bet it’s only the XXXL jerseys and hats that are really selling like hotcakes…

What the heck’s going on anyway? I tend to agree with Calcaterra’s viewpoint that possibly it’s just the anti-establishment getting their two cents in. Whatever it is, it’s not about baseball and it’s sure not about hero’s. Because, boy oh boy, if we ever needed one, hero I mean, we could sure use one about now. At least that’s my two cents worth.
