Zack Greinke on Ryan Braun: “He lied to us”

Many of Ryan Braun‘s current teammates have been supportive of him publicly following the announcement of his 65-game suspension for his connections to Biogenesis, but one former teammate isn’t pulling punches.

After taking a couple of days to gather his thoughts on the matter, Dodgers right-hander Zack Greinke expressed his disappointment on Braun in comments to Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times.

“The main thing is, yeah, he lied to us,” Greinke said. “He forced us to lie for him, threw people under the bus in order to help himself out and didn’t care, blamed others for his mistakes and it’s just a lot of things you don’t expect from people.”

Greinke was a member of the Brewers from 2011 until last July, so he was there when Braun’s 50-game suspension was overturned last February. He was one of many of those close to Braun who believed him when he said he never used performance-enhancing drugs.

“Oh, yeah, 100% believed him,” Greinke said. “Everything was so convincing. He had people to blame. He seemed like a really good guy. He was a good teammate at the time. You don’t know the guys that he was pinning it on. I’m not positive, but I think everyone 100% believed him at the time. Especially the next year, he looked just as good as the year before. His numbers his whole career, Hall of Fame numbers. How could you not believe him? He was so convincing.”

Like many others, Greinke isn’t satisfied with the statement Braun gave in the announcement from MLB earlier this week.

“The fact that even to this day he hasn’t had a real apology is really upsetting to me,” Greinke said. “I thought about it a bunch. He still hasn’t really apologized.”

Braun is under a gag-order from MLB right now, so he can’t say anything publicly on the matter, but he clearly has a lot of fences to mend in the weeks and months ahead.

I’d really like to see where the wording of this so-called “gag order” prohibits apologies.

You have to do the Jason Giambi non-specific apology. Five ‘sorries’ without ever saying why.

Like that little note with the model toilet Benjy sent to the Fair KC in My Favorite Year?

It right under the section titled “I am a lying arrogant douche bag”.

    • dickclydesdale - Jul 27, 2013 at 2:27 PM

Braun will say the same thing as others that got caught. “I unknowingly took a banned substance.”
Or he will pull a Raffy Palmeiro and blame a teammate. Maybe he will say “Grienke sabotaged my clubhouse kool aid with ped’s..LOL I’m so funny!

    DJ,

You may want to rephrase the end of the first paragraph: “but one former teammate isn’t afraid to pull punches.” Maybe “isn’t afraid to throw punches” or “Isn’t pulling his punches”

    • D.J. Short - Jul 27, 2013 at 11:44 AM

Oops. “Isn’t pulling punches” is what I thought I wrote originally. Thanks for bringing it to my attention!

“Many of Ryan Braun‘s current teammates have been supportive of him”

Well duh, it’d be incredibly awkward next year if they weren’t. There’s only so much money to go around, and when one cheater is eating up a large portion of a team’s payroll, his teammates can’t be pleased about that.

    • oasiserfede - Jul 27, 2013 at 12:21 PM

You could care less? Then, why don’t you?

      • km9000 - Jul 27, 2013 at 1:12 PM

Braun could’ve cared less what everyone but Braun thought… and he did!

    • nightman13 - Jul 27, 2013 at 12:44 PM

      Well that was douchy.

  5. royalintx - Jul 27, 2013 at 12:33 PM

I guess Zach doesn’t realize that Braun owes nobody an apology. Craig better get him up to speed.

  6. danh35 - Jul 27, 2013 at 12:59 PM

Are all these guys saying that they believed Braun really this dumb? He failed a test. Do they really think just because the sample sat longer than it should have means it spontaneously produced testosterone in it?

  7. modellforprez - Jul 27, 2013 at 1:39 PM

Oh man this could not happen to a bigger piece of shit. this Junkie will never apologize and really mean it. he only said what he said cause he was caught. and maybe Grienke didnt know but some of teammates knew. like fielder he didnt leave cause of the money or milwaukee being a cess pool of losers and retards no no no he left cause he caught junkie boy shootin roids in his ass.

    • brewcrewfan54 - Jul 27, 2013 at 4:18 PM

One of the dumber things I’ve seen someone write about this. Let me guess, you like Skip Bayless also right?

  8. cincy85 - Jul 27, 2013 at 1:53 PM

    piece of crap!!

  9. cadillacjosh - Jul 27, 2013 at 1:57 PM

Greinke really hit the nail on the head for a lot of us Brewer fans. He denied it and he was declared innocent and then his numbers didn’t change. That was enough for me. I know a lot of people like to say he technically got aquitted because of the CoC break, but that is a real thing. And it a break in the CoC will uphold in any courtroom.

But it all doesn’t matter now. As a lifelong Brewer fan and an owner of a few Braun jerseys and a guy who supported him, this pretty much sucks. A lot of people seem to really be excited he got implicated, but personally, it sucks to find out your baseball hero is a jerk.

    • sw19womble - Jul 27, 2013 at 3:28 PM

Better you find out now, than invest a whole lot more time and energy. :(

    • brewcrewfan54 - Jul 27, 2013 at 4:22 PM

Sports are entertainment and the players entertainers. You shouldn’t be looking for heroes in any entertainment industry.

  10. Marty - Jul 27, 2013 at 2:27 PM

Ryan Braun better ask Craig Calcatera if it’s ok to apologize to his teammates before doing so. Craig has a JD.

    • jwbiii - Jul 27, 2013 at 3:14 PM

“He owes apologies to people he’s personally and directly lied to.”

Readers are leaders. You, not so much, it seems.

      • sw19womble - Jul 27, 2013 at 3:32 PM

So, the whole getting up in front of the microphone and making a public statement… we should just ignore anything anyone says?

As for paying any attention to some journalist who passes on comments and statements and adds some fluff of his or her own….

Craig is obviously one of those rare turkeys who are happy to vote for xmas.

  11. razorbyrd - Jul 27, 2013 at 5:55 PM

hey, um, Zach… of course he lied to you, you idiot!!! if he had told you the truth, and you covered it up, then you’d be an accessory and probably charged with obstruction…

Report: Ryan Braun’s pants are currently on fire
