Rays want fortified dugout phone for Boston’s next visit

Jul 28, 2013, 11:08 AM EDT

The Rays are by far the hottest team in Major League Baseball — 21-3 since June 28 — and currently hold a half-game lead over the Red Sox in the American League East standings. So let the taunting begin?

Here’s how the Rays’ official Twitter account reacted to Red Sox slugger David Ortiz‘s violent smashing of the dugout-to-press box phone on Saturday night at Baltimore’s Camden Yards:

September 10 is the start date of the next Red Sox vs. Rays series at Tampa Bay’s Tropicana Field.

First on their list should be a new ballpark.

    • beezer73 - Jul 28, 2013 at 1:40 PM

New ballpark? Why? There is nothing wrong with the Trop, it’s a great venue compared to some other ballparks I’ve been to. And it’s air conditioned to 72f.

      • twinsapologist - Jul 28, 2013 at 2:43 PM

        Tell me you are joking.

    • 2011dsdad - Jul 28, 2013 at 2:43 PM

      So you’ve never been there.

      • dondada10 - Jul 28, 2013 at 3:12 PM

I went to the Trop last year around this time. It’s not as bad as I’ve seen (the old Veteran’s Stadium was pure shit) but the problem is that it’s in the middle of no where.

    • tigersfandan - Jul 28, 2013 at 4:25 PM

Well, I’d imagine they lead Florida baseball teams in attendance.

  2. Walk - Jul 28, 2013 at 11:15 AM

Well you are up boston. I am waiting for a “looking for titanium bat, will spare no expense, contact big pappi” from boston shortly.

  3. biasedhomer - Jul 28, 2013 at 11:17 AM

    WANTED: Fans

    • nothanksimdriving123 - Jul 28, 2013 at 1:40 PM

That’s rude. They have hundreds of fans.

      • titknocker - Jul 28, 2013 at 2:12 PM

        hahahahha

    • 2011dsdad - Jul 28, 2013 at 2:46 PM

Rays fans admitted are bandwagon fans – just watch, the bridge will get magically shorter now that they are in first place. The big talk in the Bay Area is always the Buccaneers, who I think have had the local TV blackout lifted once in the past two seasons

      • anotheryx - Jul 29, 2013 at 9:41 AM

Nah, Rays’ problem is that they have NO bandwagon fans. They had same same attendance first or last place.

  4. proudlycanadian - Jul 28, 2013 at 11:17 AM

I am sure that every team that has the Red Sox visit will try to Ortiz proof the dugout.

    • petcharles - Jul 29, 2013 at 11:22 AM

When they should be worrying about Ortiz-proofing their pitching staffs. The guy is still a monster at the plate.

  5. banger60 - Jul 28, 2013 at 11:41 AM

good thing no one was hurt by the flying pieces of bat.

    • timothynoble41 - Jul 28, 2013 at 1:34 PM

      …..or flying pieces of cork.

  6. Anoesis - Jul 28, 2013 at 12:06 PM

Couple of cans and some string should cover it.

  7. unclemosesgreen - Jul 28, 2013 at 12:12 PM

    Tumulus Twitter Troll!

  8. jfk69 - Jul 28, 2013 at 12:16 PM

Compared to Paul O Neils tirades after a bad call. This only rates a five out of ten.

    • bigharold - Jul 28, 2013 at 12:49 PM

O’Neill’s tirades generally were more comical and certainly less dangerous and I don’t ever remember him coming out of the dugout cursing out the umpire. All in all his were kind of quaint.

Ortiz’s meltdown really isn’t such a big deal. The only thing that I’d point to is him bouncing that bat off the phone with teammates and coaches standing close enough to be hurt, .. especially Pedroia ducking and covering. I’m pretty sure that after he cooled of he realized how stupid he was.

      • jfk69 - Jul 28, 2013 at 2:05 PM

Comical? Water coolers would beg to differ. His best was when he took nearly every bat out of the rack and threw flung them out on the field. The poor bat boy was almost decapitated.

      • bigharold - Jul 28, 2013 at 2:50 PM

Ah, .. the water cooler contingent has been heard from. You have a point…

      • soxfaninpinstriphell - Jul 29, 2013 at 8:38 AM

No, he NEVER came out of the dugout to curse an umpire…He stood in the batter box and cursed the umpire, using words that would make a harlot ort a sailor blush! (even on pitches that were clearly strikes)

  9. bosoxfan15 - Jul 28, 2013 at 12:41 PM

WANTED: a new ballpark the doesn’t smell like Joe Madden’s nut-sack and devoted fans to fill it. If Ortiz attacked their dugouts with a bat, it might be an improvement.

  10. detroitfanatic - Jul 28, 2013 at 12:57 PM

Do you have free ice cream cones?

  11. kevinbnyc - Jul 28, 2013 at 1:19 PM

Ortiz needs to get a grip. Talking about the umpire “taking the bat out of his hands” when his team is up 7-2? Come on.

    • tigersfandan - Jul 28, 2013 at 4:27 PM

He certainly did a lot with a bat that was taken out of his hands.

    • petcharles - Jul 29, 2013 at 11:29 AM

He certainly can be dramatic, and his actions were no doubt overboard and out of line. But let’s not pretend that Tim Timmons’ umpiring performance on the plate appearance in question was anything but awful. The fourth pitch (ball one) was well above the strike zone he established on Saturday, and the fifth pitch sure looked outside. It was definitely the fourth pitch, which should have been ball four, that started it. There’s close and then there’s not remotely close, and that wasn’t remotely close. But again, Ortiz’s actions were way overboard.

      • kevinbnyc - Jul 29, 2013 at 12:49 PM

I feel like Ortiz being 2 steps out of the box and tossing his bat away before the catcher even caught the ball didn’t help things.

  12. riverace19 - Jul 28, 2013 at 1:51 PM

Yah now that the Rays are hot they might get 20K in that dump they call a ballpark. I like Papi’s passion… That call was ridiculous

    • tigersfandan - Jul 28, 2013 at 4:30 PM

Next time Ortiz swings at a pitch in the dirt, do you want the umpire to rip the plate out of the ground and bash at it with his mask?

  13. pinkfloydprism - Jul 28, 2013 at 1:52 PM

First a classless manager, and now a classless front office. Wow, this organization is awesome.

  14. historiophiliac - Jul 28, 2013 at 2:12 PM

Lost in the ruckus here is that the new T-Mobile dugout cell phones are working great! It bodes well for the coming replay system. Technology will be your legacy, Bud.

  15. sabathiawouldbegoodattheeighthtoo - Jul 28, 2013 at 2:13 PM

Y’all shouldn’t make fun of Ortiz. He is probably just emotional because he is trying to get himself pregnant, just like Manny.

  16. brimab - Jul 28, 2013 at 2:16 PM

Why does a major league dugout have a phone to the pressbox?

  17. onemanarmy41 - Jul 28, 2013 at 3:24 PM

ok so we are the new kids in the league that it was normally dominated by the old franchises NY BOS but now theyre like little old ladys constantly complaining and trying to put us down verbally since now we are just kicking their butts all over time and time again, its getting to the point that the few hundred of us rather pay to see other teams from the other league or section than having fun with you guys, the kids are no more and that hurt you old timers about the Trop how the heck are you gonna compare to Fenway? that dam place is a rathole and literally stinks is uncomfortable and theres a stench like old warehouse ive been there you got to wear gloves and mask just to use the restroom and its true our Trop is far from Tpa area hence the lack of fansat the Trop but eventually we will figure out something THATS HILARIOUS A 72 DEGREE PARK ALL YEAR ROUD WITH TOP OF THE LNE SEATING FOOD RESPECTABLE WITH HANDICAP CONSIDERATIONS EVRYWHERE NOT ONLY IN CERTAIN AREAS COMPARE TO THE CESTPOOL FROM BOSTON!!!!!! LOL THATS WHAT I SAY……

    • historiophiliac - Jul 28, 2013 at 3:48 PM

I am so utterly impressed with the Florida educational system right now.

    • tigersfandan - Jul 28, 2013 at 4:28 PM

Well, you’re probably more coherent than Ortiz was.

    • sabathiawouldbegoodattheeighthtoo - Jul 28, 2013 at 9:29 PM

It’s called a period and it’s not expensive.

  18. sabathiawouldbegoodattheeighthtoo - Jul 28, 2013 at 9:27 PM
