Angels bid for Diamondbacks’ Ian Kennedy

The Angels aren’t buyers and the Diamondbacks aren’t sellers, but it seems they might be able to help each other out by doing an Ian Kennedy deal.

Both CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman and FOXSports.com’s Ken Rosenthal have mentioned the possibility. The Padres are also in the running, says MLB.com’s Steve Gilbert.

With Brandon McCarthy (shoulder) set to rejoin the rotation next week and Trevor Cahill (hip, shoulder) just a week behind, the Diamondbacks appear flush with starters. They’ve been using Patrick Corbin, Wade Miley, Kennedy, Randall Delgado and Tyler Skaggs of late, though Skaggs has already been demoted to make room for McCarthy. They also have top prospect Archie Bradley making noise with a 2.28 ERA in 15 starts in Double-A.

The problem is that, other than maybe Corbin, there’s not one guy there that seems like a front-line starter for a postseason rotation. It’s why the Diamondbacks have been mentioned in connection with the White Sox’s Jake Peavy and the Cubs’ Jeff Samardzija. If they could move Kennedy and get a couple of prospects in return, it’d make biting the bullet on a Peavy trade a lot easier.

In Kennedy, the Angels would get a guy who has been a disappointment this year, but one who still makes a modest $4.3 million and who is under control through 2015. With few major league-ready arms in the farm system, he’d be a nice to have around, especially since he’ll cost about half as much as a comparable free agent starter next year.

Kennedy, 28, is 3-7 with a 5.22 ERA this year, though he’s still fanned 101 in 119 innings. He went 21-4 with a 2.88 ERA in 2011 and 15-12 with a 4.02 ERA in 2012, striking out 385 batters in 430 1/3 innings between the two seasons.

Maybe Jerry DiPoto is angling to come back to AZ for employment. Taking Kennedy off the Dbacks hands would be a great start!

“Sorry, Ian, we’d rather have Jake than you. Buh-bye now!”

What the Diamondbacks don’t realize is that Peavy is no longer an ace. Now, maybe you can make an argument that most of his attrition is due to US Cellular, but Chase Field is no picnic either. Top that off with a very iffy future health projection and I have a hard time giving up the farm for him. Or even a small corner of the farm.

DBacks trade a vet OF (Kubel) for nothing, send Kennedy to Angels for mid-level prospects, get Peavy from Sox for mid-level prospects, and the Snakes are a better team without spending extra dollars in total. Key is not overpaying for Peavy, and dumping Kubel’s salary.

These were my thoughts exactly. He’s 32 and owed at least $14.5m for next year and possibly a player option for ’15 for $15.5m. I’m afraid Towers is punch drunk on him, kinda like his reunion with Heath Bell. I must say that Peavy, when healthy, would easily be 1 or 1a with Corbin.

I don’t think geoknows knows how bad Kennedy is. This isn’t a matter of Kennedy having bad numbers due to some bad luck or something. He is pitching like poo and every time he goes out he puts his team in a position to lose the game. Peavy doesn’t need to be close to an ace for him to be a significant upgrade over Kennedy.

Like I said before, no contender is going to be interested in Kennedy. The Angels, on the other hand, may be a great fit.

Is the other Los Angeles team interested?

Only the nickel and dime Madres would be interested in a limited upside, declining player like Ian Kennedy.

After producing Winfield, Ozzie, Gwynn and Alomar, the Madres haven’t been able to develop that superstar player since 1989 because they are cheap skates when it comes to scouting expenditures. Franchise should be retracted.

I see what you did there.

I don’t think L.A. is his dream home city after the whole headhunting experience at Chavez Ravine.

“In Kennedy, the Angels would get a guy who has been a disappointment this year…” He will fit in perfectly with the rest of the team!

Dipoto needs to stop with this D-backs nonsense. Just because he knows the players doesn’t mean the Angels need them. A good GM finds players all over who will help their team. Becoming the Arizona Diamondbacks of Anaheim won’t get the Angels to the playoffs.
