HBT Extra: Will the blown call in the Red Sox-Rays game prompt movement on replay?

Jul 30, 2013, 4:30 PM EDT

Probably not. But people will wring their hands a bit and talk about how important it is to “get replay right” without ever actually getting on with replay.  That won’t change. At least not unless the Red Sox finish a game out of the playoffs.

I know it’s more noticeable when it’s at the end of the game, but really, it’s not like Colorado getting a share of the title because of a fifth down. Equally blown and appalling calls are being made with regularity … so much regularity that it will probably even out over the course of 162 games.

Joe Nathan’s 300th save should have gotten everyone talking. Ben Zobrist got SCREWED. Ball 4 with Longo on deck turned into Joe Nathan laughing and mouthing “Wow”. I heard he had the same reaction when Tanner Scheppers got popped in the lip for running his mouth.

    • detroitfanatic - Jul 30, 2013 at 4:53 PM

The similarities are pretty astounding. Joe Nathan and Aj Pierzinski were upset, someone got punched out, then they instantly got really happy and celebrated. I always knew AJ was a dick.

Craig forgot to mention that today is National Cheesecake Day! Eat your hearts out pie lovers!

    • hittfamily - Jul 30, 2013 at 4:45 PM

Although it’s called “cake”, it’s really a pie. Sweet goodness inside a graham cracker crust. Sounds like a pie to me.

Pie is so good, they eat it on a national cake day.

      • proudlycanadian - Jul 30, 2013 at 5:15 PM

Graham cracker crust is not pastry. Furthermore, many cheesecakes offered in fine restaurants do not have graham cracker crust.

    • historiophiliac - Jul 30, 2013 at 4:57 PM

      Mmmmm, beefcake.

      • proudlycanadian - Jul 30, 2013 at 5:16 PM

        To each their own.

  4. wolfwrack - Jul 30, 2013 at 4:45 PM

Similar to the NFL, each coach should have one “challenge” per game. Too bad to see lost games and perfect games ruined due to human error when the fix is so easy.

  5. tiggersarebouncy - Jul 30, 2013 at 4:46 PM

The only thing in that game that blew worse than the call was the bloxox baserunning!!

    • tiggersarebouncy - Jul 30, 2013 at 4:48 PM

I mean, holy crap they looked like the bad news blosox out there – Daniel couldn’t Nava-gate his way home with a compass!!

  6. chiadam - Jul 30, 2013 at 4:51 PM

yeah, let’s get serious now that it hurt the Red Sox. typical.

  7. raysfan1 - Jul 30, 2013 at 5:00 PM

Why would last night’s blown call prompt swifter action on instituting instant replay any more than any number of other bad calls this season, including a couple that prompted HBT posts after said blown call had cost the Rays potential wins?

The call was bad, and the Sox might well have overcome some questionable managerial moves, but it is not worse than other examples I could cite.

I’m all for instant replay and getting the call right, but this is merely the most recent example of why it’s needed–not the most glaring or significant.

  8. detroitfanatic - Jul 30, 2013 at 5:03 PM

That homerun Price gave up was a BS homer too. That ball is a pop out in a real stadium. Good lord, that thing isn’t on the warning track in Detroit, or anywhere else for that matter.

  9. herkulease - Jul 30, 2013 at 5:09 PM

Ask the Athletics about how replayed worked out for them. It was worthless in the their game with the Indians back in May. The amount of moaning and groaning lasted 1 day and was pretty much buried after that.

But because this happened to the Red Sox we’ll be hearing for a week or more.

The Red Sox at the very least had a chance to try and tie the game in the bottom of the 9th.

  10. joecool16280 - Jul 30, 2013 at 5:10 PM

Sweeping changes will come as soon as Selig is gone…replay will be the first.

  11. hcf95688 - Jul 30, 2013 at 5:35 PM

One blown (perhaps) call on a bang-bang play goes against the Red Sox and its a National Fucking Emergency.

  12. tampajoey - Jul 30, 2013 at 5:41 PM

Who cares about the Red Sox… isn’t this about the time of year they usually fade away.

  13. sillec28 - Jul 30, 2013 at 5:44 PM

If the Red Sox finish a game out of first place they can blame it on their shoddy base-running in this game, not on the blown call. Not that they or their fans will do that of course but their poor base-running cost them the game at least to the same extent as the blown call.

    • cur68 - Jul 30, 2013 at 5:51 PM

Don’t just blame the baserunning. Their was some laughtastic managing going on there, too.

      • historiophiliac - Jul 30, 2013 at 6:44 PM

I’m going to steal that. I just wanted to let you know before you see me drop it.

      • cur68 - Jul 30, 2013 at 6:46 PM

The bit where I use “their” instead of “there” or the bit where I made up “laughtastic”? Both are laughtastic, so be my guest.

      • historiophiliac - Jul 30, 2013 at 6:47 PM

        They’re you go!

      • tiggersarebouncy - Jul 30, 2013 at 6:54 PM

HAHA – the blosox could have sent out Iglesias to run instead of the Daniel the Nava-gator HA HA HA HA HA!!

The Blue Jays laughed all the way to the bank with Mike Aviles when they duped the blosox into believing they weren’t going to fire John Farrell!! When you get taken advantage of by a team that thought bringing Mark Burhele to the AL East would be a GOOD idea – BRAINLESS!!

      • tfbuckfutter - Jul 30, 2013 at 6:56 PM

I personally am switching to the’irye to cover all my bases.

You should too, in order to cover all the bases that are you’re’s.

      • historiophiliac - Jul 30, 2013 at 7:03 PM

If only there was some variant of “y’all” that worked in the third person….

      • tfbuckfutter - Jul 30, 2013 at 7:05 PM

        My’allself?

      • cur68 - Jul 30, 2013 at 7:07 PM

        Them’uns, Me’uns, Usn’s, Y’all

      • historiophiliac - Jul 30, 2013 at 7:07 PM

Well, we do say “their all’s” but that doesn’t help with “there” or “they’re.” It’s a lesser word form.

  14. r8rnuck - Jul 30, 2013 at 6:11 PM

wah wah…what about the two blown calls at 2nd where the runners should have been caught stealing in the indians/white sox game…it happens in every game to some extent. get over it. we benefitted from the blown call against the A’s and then we paid for it a few more times thereafter…welcome to baseball. you don’t like it; stop watching because its not going to get better.

  15. notsofast10 - Jul 30, 2013 at 6:33 PM

A bigger question is will the Red Sox teach their players to run the bases properly? Not scoring from 2nd on a double is unfathomable!!!! That is what cost them the run!

  16. bucsfan5000 - Jul 30, 2013 at 8:19 PM

“Will the blown call in the Red Sox-Rays game prompt movement on replay?”

Jim Joyce ruining a perfect game didn’t, neither did Jerry Meals blowing that call in the 19th inning. MAYBE if a blown call decides game 7 of the World Series, then Bud Selig will come to his senses.
