All quiet with Rangers, Yankees, Giants; one more deal on way

4:20 p.m. EDT: Sadly, oh so very sadly, that last deal may have been Drew Butera from the Twins to the Dodgers for a player to be named.

4:15 p.m. EDT: Per ESPN.com’s Jayson Stark, there is still one more pre-deadline deal to be announced.

///

Yahoo! Sports’ Tim Brown and FOXSports.com’s Ken Rosenthal both say there’s nothing going on with the Rangers with minutes before the deadline. Rosenthal adds that the Yankees have “nothing of consequence” in the works.

The Giants also seem to have killed talks with Javier Lopez by overplaying their hand and asking for too much. It looks like they’ll try to keep their expensive lefty tandem of Lopez and Jeremy Affeldt together for another year in 2014, but it’s going to take another multiyear deal for Lopez.

The New York Post’s Joel Sherman says the Mets did nothing, either. Same goes for the Cubs, Mariners, Red Sox, Nationals, Marlins, etc.

    Well, if the Red Sox have already made their big deal and neither the Yankees nor the Mets are doing anything, I guess there’s no point in seeing if anyone else makes a deal.

    I am not sure if the Jays have traded Darren Oliver. A short time ago, Blue Jay broadcaster Buck Martinez mentioned that he did not see Oliver in the bullpen.

    I would like to see a study about whether it’s more advantageous to swap a walking free agent for a lower-percentage prospect at the deadline or rather wait for the comp pick and give your scouting director the pick of the litter rom the draft eligible player pool.

      To get any compensation, you now have to make a qualifying offer (1-yr contract) to your departing FAs. Last year that was about $13.5M. This year, it will be about $14M.

    Just glad the Cardinals made it this far without make a dumb overpay trade.

    All of the clamoring about getting a player to make a difference in the playoffs completely ignores everything we know, not suspect, but KNOW about the stochasticity of outcomes of short-series (or any small sample size) in baseball.

    You manage assets to maximize the number of times you make the playoffs, because after that it is literally a crap shoot. You do NOT manage assets to maximize the odds of winning the crapshoot one year (at most, any one player only changes your odds of winning the WS by about 1%).

      The hockey Rangers tend to make more trades in a year than most baseball teams make in a decade.

      Winnipeg Jets > New York Jets

      How did that Rick Nash trade do for the Rangers this season?

    The Rangers are always too busy going brokeback on each other behind closed doors to quench their thirst for sausage. It must be hard to discuss deals with other GM’s when a flapping weiner is in your mouth.

      Yeah, calling guys gay totally doesn’t make you sound like you’re 12 years old. Nope, definitely makes people think that listening to you is a better use of their time than counting the number of grains of sand in the Sahara.
