As first reported by’s Jenifer Langosch, the Cardinals have placed catcher Yadier Molina on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained right knee. Molina has been dealing with the knee injury since early July and he aggravated it on Tuesday night in St. Louis’ 6-0 loss at Pittsburgh’s PNC Park.

Shane Robinson has also been placed on the 15-day disabled list because of a right shoulder strain. The Cardinals have called up outfielders Adron Chambers and Brock Peterson from Triple-A Memphis to fill both vacant roster spots.

The Cardinals are on the hunt for catching help in case Molina’s knee injury proves serious. The five-time Gold Glove winner and five-time All-Star was scheduled to undergo an MRI back in St. Louis on Wednesday morning. Tony Cruz and Rob Johnson will split time behind the plate for now.

Lou Marson has been stuck at AAA since the emergence of Yan Gomes as Indians #2 catcher. Also, St Louis has had interest in Asdrubal Cabrera. How aggressive might the Cardinals get to fill their gaps?

Marson was just moved from the 15 day to the 60 day DL about a month ago. He developed a shoulder injury when in AAA rehabbing from his neck injury, so he won’t be a possibility.

Cabrera isn’t going to be moved unless the Tribe can get equal value or greater back. The Indians are in the thick of the AL Central and Wild Card races and they can’t exactly afford to give up any bullets that will help get them there. Now, if you want to start talking Rosenthal, M. Carpenter, Adams, etc., then I’m sure the Indians will listen to offers for Cabrera.

Could be a really good trade for both clubs long term. Indians have SS pospects that can’t come up and Marson is always solid but Gomes has more potential. If the Tribe get some pieces back this could be a ggreat deal!

The cards need to grab a vet to catch for them because they are in trouble without Molina behind the dish.

I’d rather have the guy that has been working with Molina for the last 2 years while being his backup than some veteran just for the sake of his veterany goodness. Extolling a players virtue based on his experience is what you do when you can’t actually come out and say he is good at baseball.

My mistake, I wasn’t aware Cruz was the backup over the past two seasons. I still think they’d be better off getting a better catcher behind him than Rob Johnson though.

Jesus, Adron Chambers, how uninspiring a move is that. The Robinson loss hurts too. He is an outstanding defender, can run, and was becoming a real option to Jay, especially against lefties. I know the Cards need a defensive outfield option, but Chambers cannot hit, and they could use an offensive spark, and the right hand hitting Peterson is really only a viable pinch hitter.
