There had been talk that the Angels were going to peddle shortstop Erick Aybar for pitching help, but Alden Gonzalez of MLB.com reports that the Angels probably going to keep him.

Not that the Angels are done. Gonzalez reports that Howie Kendrick could be dealt. Difficulty: Kendrick can block trades to 12 teams. At the moment nothing is close. You got a little over seven hours, Mr. DiPoto.

As far as the season is concerned, the Angels are done. They still have several excellent players, but trading a shortstop when there is not a good replacement available made no sense.

The Angels are in a tough position. You can’t tear down the entire team because the big contracts are in place and who knows if Mike Trout will want to stay once he can make $300 million, but there are holes that aren’t easily filled in the rotation and minor leagues. Kendrick and Aybar are both on reasonable contracts but are probably at the end of their prime productive stages.

Anyone else see his name and immediately want to call him Admiral Ackbar?

Admiral is a common nickname at an Angels site I visit.

Dipoto waited too long. Their season was over weeks ago. Should have started the trades more than a week ago. They need to trade Aybar and Kendrick. And a few other players. They should be able to get decent players for them who will be able to help the Angels in a couple years. They definitely won’t be contenders next year. Go get Patrick Corbin and Tyler Skaggs for the D-backs Dipoto.
