From closer to minor leaguer: the Mariners Tom Wilhelmsen to Triple-A Tacoma last night.

Wilhelmsen had a meltdown against the Red Sox last Thursday, helping Boston plate six runs in the ninth inning. That was that for him with the M’s, it seems, as he had not made it into a game since. On the year he has  an 4.37 ERA and 35/26 K/BB ratio over 47 1/3 innings with 24 saves.

he’s shellshocked…better off in AAA and at least being able to play and build it up again and fix whatever is ailing him

Do we know who they’re bringing up yet? I played little league and HS ball with Brian Moran, one of the Ms more promising AAA relievers. I’d love to see a hometown boy in the bigs.

This makes no sense to me how teams (not just the Mariners but others too) can conclude one week that a player is their best reliever and a week later that the same guy is not among their seven best relivers. Players’ talent levels don’t change that suddenly, absent an injury.

      should be *relievers*

It was not a sudden decision – he hasn’t been able to hit the broad side of a barn for months. The only reason they kept trying to use him is because all their other relievers are very young and almost as wild.
