UPDATE: Alex Avila cleared to play

Aug 9, 2013, 9:44 AM EDT

UPDATE: Just, like, well, never mind:

9:44 AM: Everything is going the Tigers’ way right now. Almost everything:

This after Avila took a ball off the mask in last night’s game. He’s been sent back to Detroit and will not be flying with the Tigers to New York.

Avila has had a tough year, but he has experienced a decided uptick at the plate since returning to the DL. For now Tigers catcher is Bryan Pena’s job.

    Hope he gets better.

this guy is always getting clocked in the head. it was just a matter of time. he needs to switch to the hockey style mask for real. i dont care how much he doesnt like it.

Aren’t the hockey style masks actually worse for concussions? I seem to remember hearing that they are far worse at absorbing the energy of the impact (rather than transferring that energy to the skull) than traditional masks.

How many catchers have had their face mask spark from an errant fastball? I can name one. Avila is like the drummer(s) from Spinal Tap. His injuries/accidents defy normal standards.

773 OPS in the month plus he’s been off the disabled list. That is indeed much better.

Now would be a nice time for Pudge to come back.

      I love Pudge.

      Rodriguez or Fisk?

  6. blacksables - Aug 9, 2013 at 10:05 AM

    Maybe this would help.

    • historiophiliac - Aug 9, 2013 at 10:17 AM

      Is that safe for work?

And, yet, my trust issues are not assuaged by your assurances…

      • blacksables - Aug 9, 2013 at 10:53 AM

I am the most trust-worthy person you will ever encounter on the internet.

I have no agenda, I have no reason to deceive, and I abhor practical jokes.

Plus, my ‘package’ isn’t noteworthy enough to warrant posting pictures of it online.

        Ok then. That was cute.
