Delmon Young designated for assignment by Phillies

Aug 9, 2013, 2:18 PM EDT

Delmon Young AP

Good night, sweet prince.

They signed him to an incentive-laden deal, paid him to lose weight, waited for him to recover from ankle surgery, and then handed him the starting job in right field. And now the Phillies have designated Delmon Young for assignment after he hit .261 with eight homers and a .699 OPS in 80 games while playing his usual awful defense.

Young is still just 27 years old, but he’s been an above-average hitter for a corner outfielder exactly once in seven full seasons and is bad enough defensively that his best position is designated hitter. And since a supposed “breakout” season with the Twins in 2010 he’s hit a combined .266 with a .299 on-base percentage and .402 slugging percentage in 355 games, striking out 266 times compared to 57 walks in 1,402 plate appearances.

While in Philadelphia for the SABR convention last week I went to Friday night’s Phillies-Braves game and saw Young go 3-for-4 with a homer that landed about 10 feet from my spot in right field. He then went 1-for-15 with eight strikeouts in his next five games, which means I can officially say that I was there for Young’s last homer with the Phillies. Some things are just meant to be.

Dreams that never were for you guys….so sorry HBT

  2. mplsjoe - Aug 9, 2013 at 2:20 PM

Terry Ryan is already on the phone.

  3. Old Gator - Aug 9, 2013 at 2:21 PM

This will leave Ruben Amaro the Lesser roster space to bring up a mascot from one of their minor league teams.

    • scotttheskeptic - Aug 9, 2013 at 2:51 PM

Casper “the friendly ghost” Wells is the Threshers mascot?

      • Old Gator - Aug 9, 2013 at 3:01 PM

He’s bringing up Wells? Is that anything like fracking?

      • scotttheskeptic - Aug 9, 2013 at 3:07 PM

No, fracking at least produces energy.

    • shaggylocks - Aug 9, 2013 at 3:04 PM

I believe they’ve already decided to clear Delmon Young’s roster spot for “OMG Anyone But Delmon Young.”

      • historiophiliac - Aug 9, 2013 at 3:24 PM

So, you’d be interested in Don Kelly?

  4. gammagammahey - Aug 9, 2013 at 2:26 PM

Cue Puff Daddy’s “I’ll Be Missing You”.

  5. flamethrower101 - Aug 9, 2013 at 2:26 PM

I still laugh at how much Ruben Amaro Jr. defended this signing. Both of those guys are clowns, but at least the Phillies finally came to their senses and decided one of them wasn’t worth their job. Now let’s just hope they come to their senses on the other as well.

  6. buffal0sportsfan - Aug 9, 2013 at 2:33 PM

Bring him back to the tigers just for the playoffs!

    • historiophiliac - Aug 9, 2013 at 2:38 PM

      Are you insane?

      • unclemosesgreen - Aug 9, 2013 at 3:04 PM

What the heck do you have against day-old free donuts?

      • unclemosesgreen - Aug 9, 2013 at 3:05 PM

Besides, everyone knows Dave Dombroski’s phone finger is just fucking twitching to call up Brandon Inge’s agent. It’s only a matter of time …

  7. 12strikes - Aug 9, 2013 at 2:37 PM

Maybe Kyle Kendrick will allow Young to borrow the pictures Kendrick uses to black mail RAJ to stay on the team.

  8. Jonny 5 - Aug 9, 2013 at 2:51 PM

Hey Gleeman, myself and 3 other HBT posters were there that night as well. A Canadian bird watcher (of the blue jay species) A Floridian with the taste for bottom dwelling fish (Ray to be precise) And a non denominational baseball fan, along with myself. Glad to see DY hit the bricks to be honest with ya.

    • scotttheskeptic - Aug 9, 2013 at 2:54 PM

Jonny, thanks for putting this area’s best foot forward for these non-native species of fans. The Dad’s Deli reference gave away your general location, and I hope you took these folks to the Jug Handle Inn for the best wings anywhere.

      • Jonny 5 - Aug 9, 2013 at 4:19 PM

Awww man! We didn’t have much time to hit every place, so the jug was left off the list. But we did get them some cheese steaks which they ate as if there was no food left on earth, and the City Tavern was to die for. Also hit the Reading terminal market for some breakfast at the diner in there. They were mostly impressed by the “I love bacon” t-shirts the workers wore. One place I really messed up though. I never got them any pork roll. I’m terrible. They may never know the joys of pork roll now. :>(

      • heyblueyoustink - Aug 9, 2013 at 4:28 PM

Whoa. Easy there. Best wings in the area? See if you can say the same if you have the testicular fortitude to make your way to Bailey’s Bar in Levittown.

      • heyblueyoustink - Aug 9, 2013 at 4:30 PM

Taylor’s will ship pork roll for you, you just have to tell the Canadian how to prepare it.

I sent some to Wichita over the winter.

      • heyblueyoustink - Aug 9, 2013 at 4:33 PM

        No Italian Market? 😦

      • scotttheskeptic - Aug 9, 2013 at 4:47 PM

heyblue, I stated best wings anywhere. But give me a general fix on Bailey’s location, I’ll give’m a try.

      • scotttheskeptic - Aug 9, 2013 at 4:48 PM

jonny, what about scrapple? Did they try scrapple?

      • scotttheskeptic - Aug 9, 2013 at 4:49 PM

And did you teach ’em to eat a Jersey tomato like it was an apple?

  9. pisano - Aug 9, 2013 at 2:57 PM

Sounds like a future Yankee to be.

  10. scotttheskeptic - Aug 9, 2013 at 3:01 PM

The real question is when does Amaro begin to make the decisions that are difficult?

  11. klownboy - Aug 9, 2013 at 3:09 PM

My, how the once mighty (#1 overall pick) has fallen…

    • unclemosesgreen - Aug 9, 2013 at 3:12 PM

      That’s a klown komment bro.

      • klownboy - Aug 9, 2013 at 3:16 PM

Bryce Harper is going to sue the hell out of you, BRO

      • unclemosesgreen - Aug 9, 2013 at 3:18 PM

I’ll send Big Papi after his phones.

      • klownboy - Aug 10, 2013 at 12:33 AM

  12. tfbuckfutter - Aug 9, 2013 at 3:16 PM

This is definitely a positive development for Delmon.

The only other place he can possibly end up in Kansas City….so he’ll be trading cheesesteaks and buttholes for barbecue and friendly folk.

    • historiophiliac - Aug 9, 2013 at 9:16 PM

      What about Andre Braugher?

  13. officialgame - Aug 9, 2013 at 3:27 PM

Delman Young had decided to become a Rabbi anyway.

  14. sandrafluke2012 - Aug 9, 2013 at 3:38 PM

Higher WAR for rest of career? Don Kelly or Delmon?

  15. steelers88 - Aug 9, 2013 at 3:54 PM

I wonder if the Pirates would be interested?

  16. Walk - Aug 9, 2013 at 4:11 PM

    Pirates already have a mascot.

    • tfbuckfutter - Aug 9, 2013 at 4:29 PM

Ok, well how about the Brewers? Do they need a backup sausage for the mascot race?

They wouldn’t even have to tailor the costume to fit him….BECAUSE HE DOESN’T NEED IT! ZING!

      • historiophiliac - Aug 9, 2013 at 5:01 PM

Well, the good news is he’s off his diet now. Now he can have comfort cakes.

      • tfbuckfutter - Aug 9, 2013 at 5:06 PM

I just feel bad for whoever he is about to buy a wedding cake out from under.

      • Walk - Aug 9, 2013 at 5:42 PM

Perhaps the giants have an opening for a ball dude.

      • tfbuckfutter - Aug 9, 2013 at 5:51 PM

If San Fransisco signs him they will have to add “Heads” to their team name.

  17. delsj - Aug 9, 2013 at 5:47 PM

This was inevitable. I am not sure of the exact language in his contract, but he was becoming pricier by the day. He was well on his way to the $3.5M max. I think he was about to unlock a couple more incentives for at bats, games &/or another weigh-in very soon.

    • scotttheskeptic - Aug 10, 2013 at 1:22 AM

This was obvious because he sucked. The fact that he was signed demonstrated that Amaro is clueless, and, quite frankly, another 2 million wouldn’t kill the Phillies.

  18. fissels - Aug 9, 2013 at 5:57 PM

Bout time. Let the kids play!

  19. timpaz - Aug 10, 2013 at 10:58 AM

Another bad signing by Amaro, there have got to be better candidates for GM job , this team is in shambles old , overpaid, needs total rebuild , so wish Paul Owens was still alive.
