Former major leaguer Chad Curtis’ criminal sexual conduct trial is underway

Chad Curtis, whose major league career featured stints with the Angels, Tigers, Dodgers, Indians, Yankees and Rangers — and who has two World Series rings from his time in the Bronx — is on trial in Michigan on multiple counts of criminal sexual conduct arising out of his time as a volunteer weightlifting coach at a high school. The charges came to light last summer.

Curtis is accused of inappropriately touching girls between the ages of 13 and 16. He faces a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison if convicted at the trial.

Curtis’s career highlight was probably hitting two homers for the Yankees in Game 3 of the 1999 World Series, including a walkoff. He was also know to have alienated multiple teammates over the course of his career, in part because his deeply religious beliefs led him to call out their off-field conduct. It has been reported that this is what led him to be traded away from the Yankees following the 1999 season, as he took issue with Derek Jeter‘s dating habits.

Would that were the worst thing he was ever accused of.

Alright, settle down, I know, ugh, but still innocent until proven guilty.

    • stoutfiles - Aug 13, 2013 at 9:19 AM

Society doesn’t roll that way anymore. It’s “legally innocent but assumed guilty until proven guilty”.

      • southofheaven81 - Aug 13, 2013 at 9:23 AM

Oh I know. I fully expect to get 4 thumbs down for every 1 up for that comment.

      • wretchu - Aug 13, 2013 at 2:17 PM

Wow, dead-on on the ratio, just missed which ones got the votes. As of this post 44 up / 11 down.

    • yahmule - Aug 13, 2013 at 9:33 AM

You should get unanimous thumbs down for posting trite nonsense.

If you’re not seated on the jury, you can form any conclusions you like. Very simple.

      • historiophiliac - Aug 13, 2013 at 10:21 AM

Also, he was pointing out the obvious there. How are you going to have a thread from that?

      • yahmule - Aug 13, 2013 at 12:01 PM

I don’t have enough information on this story to form any opinion one way or another, but the idea that private citizens are held to the same standards as sworn jurors is an unfortunate and pervasive misconception.

    • derekbelllist - Aug 13, 2013 at 11:20 AM

Ugggh, another arm chair lawyer who thinks he’s being smart by spounting off a bumper sticker comment. I bet you scream “what ever happned to free speech” everytime someone gets fired from a private company for spouting off at the mouth.

      • southofheaven81 - Aug 13, 2013 at 7:30 PM

What does a legal case have to do with a private company? Choad.

    • kevinbnyc - Aug 13, 2013 at 12:58 PM

You’re right. He was probably just trying to teach those girls proper form.

    • chiadam - Aug 13, 2013 at 1:01 PM

      Inno-what?

    • dickclydesdale - Aug 13, 2013 at 6:02 PM

      Still rocking the flat top.

  2. brianjoates - Aug 13, 2013 at 9:25 AM

Who wouldn’t want Jeters dating resume?

    • addictedzone - Aug 13, 2013 at 9:48 AM

Obviously Curtis. Jeter’s girls appear to be too old for Curtis.

  3. dondada10 - Aug 13, 2013 at 9:38 AM

I’ve coached Strength and Conditioning for years and there’s no reason to touch somebody.

    • historiophiliac - Aug 13, 2013 at 9:52 AM

You are not doing it right.

      • dondada10 - Aug 13, 2013 at 9:58 AM

Why do women always say that to me?

      • historiophiliac - Aug 13, 2013 at 10:00 AM

It’s optimism, dude. We think you can do better.

      • dondada10 - Aug 13, 2013 at 10:26 AM

So you’re saying I need to try harder?

      • historiophiliac - Aug 13, 2013 at 11:15 AM

You should listen to your coach on that.

      • drone501 - Aug 13, 2013 at 4:42 PM

        lol

    • jfk69 - Aug 13, 2013 at 11:23 AM

      Their point exactly.
I believe it was when they were doing squats. Chad was underneath checking form

      • dondada10 - Aug 13, 2013 at 11:30 AM

That’s the only lift that might involve touching. A common piece of advice I give young squatters is to clench their glutes on the way up. But still, you can just say it. You don’t have to forcibly clench their glutes.

Also, if you were gonna spot somebody on squat, you’d be around their lats. I can see that being inappropriate with a woman as your fingers are essentially on their high ribs. Also avoidable: you’re training women, teach them to spot each other.

I know it’s innocent until proven guilty, but a coach can’t put themselves in this position.

      • anxovies - Aug 13, 2013 at 3:05 PM

If I had a teenage daughter I would definitely tell her to clench her glutes when Chad was around.

  4. echech88 - Aug 13, 2013 at 10:06 AM

    Gross.

    • chiadam - Aug 13, 2013 at 1:04 PM

      This.

  5. tanzkommandant - Aug 13, 2013 at 11:05 AM

If she’s old enough to ride a bike, she’s old enough for me.

    • dondada10 - Aug 13, 2013 at 11:31 AM

If I have daughters can I retroactively punch you in the face?

      • drone501 - Aug 13, 2013 at 4:43 PM

please , let me put the finishing touch to this jerk.

  6. derekbelllist - Aug 13, 2013 at 11:18 AM

Another pius religious child molesting hypocrit. There seems to be no shortage of those.

    • yahmule - Aug 13, 2013 at 12:55 PM

I wonder if teaching children that sex is dirty and the human body is something to be ashamed of might not be such a great idea after all.

  7. jfk69 - Aug 13, 2013 at 11:21 AM

Nice to see Chad has gotten on with his life’s work. Making sure these young ladies are aware of the risks of dating Jeter types. I am sure it is all a big misunderstanding.
Now ten more squats while I am positioned beneath you watching your form.

  8. nukeslovesit - Aug 13, 2013 at 12:13 PM

Just looking at that picture, he looks the part to me.

    • yahmule - Aug 13, 2013 at 12:57 PM

We would like to use a peremptory challenge, please.

  9. denverdude7 - Aug 13, 2013 at 12:21 PM

When these holier than thou Bible-Thumper types go down they go down fast and they go down hard. Unless of course they are Republican politicians. Then, they get re-elected.

    • Glenn - Aug 13, 2013 at 3:14 PM

Are suggesting that Curtis widen his stance?

      • yahmule - Aug 13, 2013 at 6:14 PM

Next to the congressman who tried to claim he was running his own independent sting operation during Abscam, this was the best excuse ever.

The more people talk about God the less I trust them
