Alex Avila is still sidelined with concussion symptoms

Aug 15, 2013, 5:03 PM EDT

Tigers catcher Alex Avila has been shut down since being placed on the 7-day DL on Sunday. He’s going to be shut down a little while longer:

The Tigers are going to wait to activate him until he wakes up clear of concussion symptoms.

Momma, don’t let your babies grow up to be catchers. A lot of them have been on that 7 day DL this season. Let’s see, Perez from KC, Jaso from OAK, Ross from BOS, Doumit from MIN, Thole from the Mets and now Avila, plus Santana from CLE and Wilson from SEA last year. Those NL catchers must be a hardy bunch.

I suppose there’s no good way to be hit in the head by a 90 MPH pitch, but at this point it’s worth asking if anyone’s spent much time looking into this problem. The helmet mask was the last real innovation but I don’t think it was intended to address the concussion thing.

I’m not sure what the answer would be either, for the concussions. I know Avila has struggled at the plate this year, but he still handles the Tigers staff very well. I’d hate to see this happen to any catcher on any team. Hopefull that he can recover.
