The time Ken Griffey Jr. and A-Rod met a young David Ortiz and got killed in an impromptu home run derby

Aug 16, 2013, 1:30 PM EDT

This is all kinds of fun. Thanks to Caught Looking for the heads up on this local news piece featuring a pre-evil A-Rod, a pre-injured Ken Griffey Jr., an impossibly skinny looking David Ortiz and a barnstorming trip which turned into an impromptu home run derby in Appleton, Wisconsin back in 1996.

misdirectuon. nice tactic Craig. AFraud got ya on the payroll yet?

    • dickclydesdale - Aug 16, 2013 at 6:22 PM

To bad this jagoff narrator talks for 3 minutes & only shows a few seconds of Ortiz actually hitting. BTW yeah A-rod was using ped’s back then because Jose Canseco was his workout trainer.

why is “skinny kid” ARod implicated as being a PED user here, but not “skinny kid” Ortiz? Cause only one of them has failed a drug test and it’s not Arod. http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/eye-on-baseball/23053840/david-ortiz-still-doesnt-know-why-he-failed-that-drug-test-in-2003

    • churchoftheperpetuallyoutraged - Aug 16, 2013 at 1:44 PM

Arod failed that same drug test…

      • itsacurse - Aug 16, 2013 at 1:45 PM

I don’t need to read or facts to know what I choose to believe about who did what

      • heyblueyoustink - Aug 16, 2013 at 1:53 PM

I think we need to drug test here at HBT.

      • paperlions - Aug 16, 2013 at 2:23 PM

As far as we know….the “leaked” names were never verified were they? …nor were the substances they were supposed to have tested positive for….I have always been a bit dubious of the claims that the 5 or so names that were leaked were accurate….there has never been a full list published or verification of information (names or substances)….just a couple of alleged “leaks” that have been assumed to be fact.

      • churchoftheperpetuallyoutraged - Aug 16, 2013 at 2:44 PM

        As far as we know

Considering he admitted it in ’09 when confronted by Selena Roberts, I think it’s fair to say he failed the test.

      • paperlions - Aug 16, 2013 at 3:05 PM

…but we don’t know that Ortiz failed anything. According to Ortiz (who could be lying, but no one has contradicted him), he was never notified that he failed a test and never told by anyone what he allegedly tested positive for (if anything).

      • churchoftheperpetuallyoutraged - Aug 16, 2013 at 3:54 PM

It’s entirely possible Ortiz never did, but that’s not what I’m responding to:

why is “skinny kid” ARod implicated as being a PED user here, but not “skinny kid” Ortiz? Cause only one of them has failed a drug test and it’s not Arod.

Arod admitted he failed that test. So the “implication” is wrong.

      • rje49 - Aug 16, 2013 at 6:19 PM

Hey, just look at the two of them. A-Rod put on mostly muscle, Ortiz put on a spare tire.

      • ikedavisnose - Aug 16, 2013 at 6:27 PM

        From a Monster Truck?

  3. alexo0 - Aug 16, 2013 at 1:46 PM

Grantland had this on about a week ago already.

    • cohnjusack - Aug 16, 2013 at 2:28 PM

…and as I rarely read Grandland, I’m happy it’s been posted here.

    • shaggylocks - Aug 16, 2013 at 2:33 PM

Dude, Appleton WI had this on like 17 year ago.

  4. ditto65 - Aug 16, 2013 at 1:56 PM

The last couple of sentences are total bullshit. Look at anyone’s before and after from teen to 30 something.

    • NowWaitJustAMinute - Aug 16, 2013 at 2:30 PM

This video would have been cool without the bs editorializing at the end. “Future HOFer” Ortiz was skinny as hell, too…was it all natural ability or supplementation?

    • bfunk1978 - Aug 16, 2013 at 6:04 PM

Not to mention he calls Ortiz a future HoF’er, someone who also failed a PED test.

  5. miketreedy - Aug 16, 2013 at 2:01 PM

I wish the video showed more home runs and less of this guy reporting what happened. What video was shown was great to see.

  6. nolanwiffle - Aug 16, 2013 at 2:58 PM

If you squint and get really close to the screen at the 2:33 mark in the video, you can see the “thought bubble” appear above A-Rod’s head and it reads: “Hmmmmm, I may need to up my dosage.”

  7. deathmonkey41 - Aug 16, 2013 at 3:26 PM

I guess Big Papi was already getting those tainted DR milkshakes back then.

  8. biasedhomer - Aug 16, 2013 at 4:49 PM

    Interesting he says future HOFer

  9. professorperry - Aug 16, 2013 at 5:41 PM

And then the Twins said to David Ortiz – hit to all fields, hit line drives, don’t try to hit homers. Nice work, Twins.

    • dirtyharry1971 - Aug 16, 2013 at 6:46 PM

Yea that’s the children’s story book version, yea you keep believing that one, RIGHT!!

  10. dirtyharry1971 - Aug 16, 2013 at 6:46 PM

Ortiz future HOFER? I don’t think so folks, you left Barry and Rocket off the ballot, you better sure as hell leave this proven cheat off!!

  11. jdillydawg - Aug 16, 2013 at 9:23 PM

Well, if we’re basing our belief that Ortiz and A-Rod juiced because of their performance that day and how skinny they were, then there’s no way in Hell Griffey ever took anything stronger than a Red Bull.
