Longtime friend of Ryan Braun files lawsuit for defamation

Aug 16, 2013, 7:20 PM EDT

ESPN is reporting that a longtime friend of Ryan Braun has filed a lawsuit against the Milwaukee slugger. Ralph Sasson alleges that Braun doped while playing for the University of Miami, committed academic fraud, and accepted money while a student. Sasson helped Braun successfully appeal his suspension back in 2011, when the right fielder tested positive.

Sasson alleges Braun violated a non-disclosure agreement when he made “defamatory statements” to undisclosed parties for which Sasson is seeking damages.

Braun is currently serving a season-ending 65-game suspension. His attorney, Howard Weitzman, does not think Sasson’s claims hold water:

“This lawsuit is an unfortunate attempt to capitalize on Ryan’s recent press attention for taking responsibility for his actions. The factual allegations and the legal claims have absolutely no merit. We believe the lawsuit will be dismissed,” he said in a statement.

Sasson also alleges in his lawsuit that Braun asked him to prank call Mark Fainaru-Wada of ESPN’s “Outside the Lines”.

So exactly why is he suing him?

    • brewcrewfan54 - Aug 16, 2013 at 7:33 PM

Woops, there it is, missed it somehow at first. Still sounds like a former friend trying to reach into his pockets though.

      • Bill Baer - Aug 16, 2013 at 7:36 PM

You didn’t miss it, I accidentally dragged up a line too high when I was editing the article and deleted it inadvertently. Sorry for the confusion.

      • brewcrewfan54 - Aug 16, 2013 at 7:47 PM

        Ahhh! Excellent sir.

    • dickclydesdale - Aug 17, 2013 at 3:32 AM

Braun is always bug eyed so now we know he used meth& snorted cocaine.

  2. Stiller43 - Aug 16, 2013 at 7:28 PM

“This lawsuit is an unfortunate attempt to capitalize on Ryan’s recent press attention for taking responsibility for his actions…”

Gotta love lawyer talk. The recent press he got was for being caught in his own lies, and only then issuing a statement saying “okay, i may have made a mistake.”

A lawyer would take a dog turd and tell you its a supersized tootsie roll.

    • dakotaandotter - Aug 17, 2013 at 2:42 PM

      LOL, a supersized tootsie roll!

  3. rbj1 - Aug 16, 2013 at 7:29 PM

So is there some sort of competition now between A-Rod & Braun over who gets to be history’s greatest monster?

    • savvybynature - Aug 17, 2013 at 2:53 AM

Hitler will be greatly disappointed to find out that he is out of the running. Had he only ordered his scientists to discover PEDs instead of nuclear weapons and rocket technology…

  4. pjmitch - Aug 16, 2013 at 7:30 PM

You mean I can sue someone for convincing me to make a prank call?? I’m going to be rich!

    • righthandofjustice - Aug 16, 2013 at 9:25 PM

Actually you can. Even if they make you sign an agreement to give up your rights to appeal or sue but if you are compelled to accepting the offer you can take legal actions.

      • dparker713 - Aug 17, 2013 at 10:54 AM

I’d be interested to he the legal theory behind that logic.

  5. Old Gator - Aug 16, 2013 at 7:40 PM

Does it really surprise anyone to know that someone like Braun would have friends like Sasson?

  6. mackypinky - Aug 16, 2013 at 7:49 PM

    am I right?

  7. jdh1016j - Aug 16, 2013 at 7:52 PM

Milwaukee picked him over Prince Fielder? Braun will be the face of the franchise for the next decade. Somebody call Magic out in L.A and see if he can use another ego driven, overpaid, talented pile of human waste. I sure Braun and Beckett will get along like brothers.

    • dondada10 - Aug 16, 2013 at 8:25 PM

“I’ll take Braun on my team,” said two thirds of Major League Baseball.

      • brewcrewfan54 - Aug 16, 2013 at 8:46 PM

Well if they had a crystal fucking ball they probably wouldn’t have done it.

      • brewcrewfan54 - Aug 16, 2013 at 9:05 PM

Probably shoulda left that “F” word out. My bad. Already having some drinks on this fine Friday.

    • koufaxmitzvah - Aug 16, 2013 at 8:38 PM

You don’t go 39-8 with overblown egos. But you can comment via computer without the use of a brain.

      Thanks for the lesson, Asshole.

      • dondada10 - Aug 16, 2013 at 8:55 PM

The Dodgers don’t have overblown egos?

There’s a lot of really good guys on the Dodgers, too. Kemp, Adrian Gonzalez. But don’t make it sound like the Dodgers are winning because they’re helping old ladies cross streets.

      • koufaxmitzvah - Aug 17, 2013 at 9:17 AM

They’re playing ball well together. That’s called Chemistry, no? An overblown ego blows the rest of the clubhouse away.

Or did I get that wrong? Is an overblown ego just somebody who pisses people who aren’t in the clubhouse, or even rooting for that team these players are on?

Kemp’s ego…. he roots for his team. He gives his cleats to dying children.

Gonzalez’s ego… he never takes a day off. He’s always battling and helping the team get beter.

HanRam’s ego…. dude is our MVP, getting clutch hits. How dare he!1!

        Uribe’s ego…. Are you serious?

Puig is 22. He catches the ball kind of funny.

The team is 47-2. Nobody’s ego is harming this ballclub, their fans, or the good people of Southern California. They do, however, make Giants cry and turn into raging banana tossers.

        I feel for them.

      • koufaxmitzvah - Aug 17, 2013 at 9:18 AM

        Too early in the morning.

The team is not 47-2 but 41-8.

  8. wheels579 - Aug 16, 2013 at 7:53 PM

Where would OTL get their content without prank calls?

  9. chacochicken - Aug 16, 2013 at 7:55 PM

And all this time I’ve been prank calling Mark Fainaru-Wada for free.

  10. jwbaseball - Aug 16, 2013 at 8:31 PM

The biggest story here for ped apologists like joe Sheehan: you probably would never had heard of Ryan Braun has he not had a needle in his thigh while in college. The idea that baseball players “start” using drugs after they’ve hit the show is comical. Ped use starts in high school and continues until retirement. Trying to guess when ped use started is impossible.

  11. pappageorgio - Aug 16, 2013 at 8:33 PM

People can claim it’s a friend trying to reach into his pockets all they want. If this was a case of Braun getting a friend to do his dirty work and said friend did in fact have a non-disclosure agreement in place which Braun violated by telling people…..Braun is probably going to be a bit lighter in the wallet.

Expect this one to settle out of court for an undisclosed amount, with Braun admitting no wrong doing, and Mr. Ex-friend tied to the other side of a non-disclosure agreement.

  12. hornbuckle - Aug 16, 2013 at 8:38 PM

    I thought it was herpes.

  13. cadillacjosh - Aug 16, 2013 at 8:50 PM

Back when I thought Braun was innocent, I used to always say “Just look at his numbers, they’re so consistent. If he was using during 2011, he’s been using since college.”

Which was a pretty decent defense, albeit not great, for the time. But with this sort of news, I was just building a case against him.

  14. jdillydawg - Aug 16, 2013 at 9:15 PM

With friends like that, who needs enemies?

  15. 13arod - Aug 16, 2013 at 9:20 PM

    Braun get out of baseball

    • abaird2012 - Aug 16, 2013 at 10:33 PM

Apropos of nothing, but you should probably change your handle …

  16. righthandofjustice - Aug 16, 2013 at 9:20 PM

It is at least refreshing, for a change A REAL PERSON WITH A REAL NAME actually is taking the doping issues to court instead of some “anonymous sources” doing all defamatory trash talks but cannot face the light.

If this story is true, doesn’t it make Braun a bigger rat than A-Rod since he defamed his long time buddy?

    • apmn - Aug 16, 2013 at 10:01 PM

      Rat is rat.

  17. harrycanyon - Aug 16, 2013 at 10:23 PM

So basically Braun kinda sucks and has to cheat in order to compete at any level. What a turd.

  18. baseballisboring - Aug 17, 2013 at 2:01 AM

What does he mean by “academic fraud”?

  19. modellforprez - Aug 17, 2013 at 7:38 AM
