Ryan Dempster hits Alex Rodriguez with a fastball, umpire ejects Joe Girardi

Aug 18, 2013, 8:45 PM EDT

Red Sox's Dempster throws against the Blue Jays in the first inning of their American League MLB baseball game in Toronto Reuters

After the Red Sox took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, third baseman Alex Rodriguez led off the top of the second inning for the Yankees. Sox starter Ryan Dempster‘s first pitch to Rodriguez was a fastball that went behind him towards his legs. Dempster’s next two pitches were waist-high inside, and on the fourth pitch Dempster plunked Rodriguez in the shoulder with a fastball. A very pleased Red Sox crowd became raucous, cheering in support of their pitcher. The benches cleared, but no punches were thrown.

Home plate umpire Brian O’Nora immediately issued warnings to both dugouts. An irate Joe Girardi stormed out of the Yankees dugout pleading for Dempster to be ejected. Instead, Girardi was tossed and the game resumed with Dempster allowed to continue his outing despite the rather obvious intent of his previous four pitches. Yankees starter CC Sabathia did not retaliate on behalf of Rodriguez.

On Friday, Red Sox starter John Lackey told the media that he thinks A-Rod shouldn’t be playing baseball. Girardi fired back, telling Lackey that if he doesn’t like A-Rod’s right to play while he appeals his 211-game suspension, he should help negotiate a new collective bargaining agreement.

Personal battles aside, this is an important game for both teams. At the moment, the 73-52 Red Sox have a tenuous 1.5-game lead over the second-place Rays in the AL East while the 63-59 Yankees are just 6.5 games out of the second Wild Card in the American League.

Update: Here’s a .gif of the first and fourth pitches of the at-bat, courtesy @Triples_Alley.

And now the game is tied.

    Good work as usual, Dumpster.

  2. thebadguyswon - Aug 18, 2013 at 8:48 PM

Going to very much enjoy watching Bahston get bounced in the postseason.

    • illegalblues - Aug 18, 2013 at 9:13 PM

at least they are probably going to make the postseason ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

      • aceshigh11 - Aug 19, 2013 at 12:51 AM

Wouldn’t be so sure with the way this team is playing now.

  3. churchoftheperpetuallyoutraged - Aug 18, 2013 at 8:52 PM

    Stay classy Dumpster

  4. yahmule - Aug 18, 2013 at 8:52 PM

This is how you become a hero in that crappy town.

  5. okwhitefalcon - Aug 18, 2013 at 8:53 PM

I wonder if Ryan Braun has gotten fitted for his suit of armor yet?

    • dondada10 - Aug 18, 2013 at 10:02 PM

Braun didn’t snitch. Who’s gonna throw at him, urine sample collectors?

      • duvisited - Aug 18, 2013 at 11:54 PM

        Snitching >> defamation

    • getintotalk - Aug 18, 2013 at 10:27 PM

Word is A-Rod’s posse are the ones who turned in Braun. If only there were an inter-league game. Braun would throw at A-Rod from the outfield. Probably hit him harder, and with fewer throws, than Dempster . . .

  6. kingscourt25 - Aug 18, 2013 at 8:54 PM

I really don’t understand why 1st place teams like the Red Sox and Braves pick fights with teams they are significantly ahead of in the standings. Teams are going to want to ruin your season if you give them a reason to.

    • paperlions - Aug 18, 2013 at 8:59 PM

Because the natural inclination of many people is to be vengeful and petty.

  7. hojo20 - Aug 18, 2013 at 8:55 PM

Yeah great job, idiot. Now it’s 2-2.

  8. banger60 - Aug 18, 2013 at 8:55 PM

as usual, another pu*sy as move by the red sox, they also need to suspend that ump, no matter what, terrible call!

    • yanks33 - Aug 18, 2013 at 9:21 PM

Is there any other move made by the Redsox?

    • tigersfandan - Aug 18, 2013 at 11:47 PM

Umpire makes a questionable decision. Somebody either wants him suspended or fired. Give it a rest, people.

    • historiophiliac - Aug 19, 2013 at 12:15 AM

Hey, dillweed, there’s nothing wrong with vagina. Stop using it as an insult.

  9. ridingwithnohandlebars - Aug 18, 2013 at 8:56 PM

That was ridiculous. I have no lover for either team but Dempster should have been tossed.

    • frank433 - Aug 18, 2013 at 9:08 PM

That would be weird if you had a lover for either team.

  10. thehakko936 - Aug 18, 2013 at 8:56 PM

Can’t stand him, but give A-rod credit for not coming unglued.

    • jeffbbf - Aug 18, 2013 at 9:40 PM

what was he going to do? charge the mound while the rest of his team stayed in the dugout?

      • dondada10 - Aug 18, 2013 at 10:04 PM

In fairness the Yankee dugout cleared and they seemed to coddle A-Rod when he scored.

      • jstall120 - Aug 18, 2013 at 10:21 PM

You mean HE DIDNT *HAVE* to (key word have) charge the mound apparently his teammates still have his back. This is the Yankees not the Sox. The players (esp. W A-Rods tenure) have each others backs through what ever. That was just ignorant and a waist of your time considering the benches cleared. Idiot

  11. Jeremiah Graves - Aug 18, 2013 at 8:58 PM

Pathetic. You’re in a damn pennant race and you want to act like f’n children? If the Sox get bounced by a game again and it has anything to do with this bullshit, it’ll be perfectly just.

You’re all grown men being paid millions of dollars to play baseball for a living, get your heads out of your asses and play the game the right way, not like petulant little children.

    Garbage.

    • blacksables - Aug 19, 2013 at 7:37 AM

Actually, according to the ‘player’s code’, they are playing it the right way. Their way. No one is forcing you to watch it.

      • Jeremiah Graves - Aug 19, 2013 at 11:18 PM

I hate this response. It’s such a bullshit cop-out. “No one is forcing you to watch.” If you’re a baseball fan, you’re going to watch baseball. Period. That doesn’t excuse the entire “player’s code” mentality that is outdated at best and downright horseshit at worst. Throwing a hard projectile at another human being (multiple times) in speeds exceeding 85+ MPH isn’t some badge of honor, it’s attempted murder and it’s downright pathetic. Ryan Dempster doesn’t have to bat. Ryan Dempster doesn’t get to have a ball chucked into his kidneys at any point. It’s a barbaric practice that is downright shameful in 2013.

The “good ole boys” and “player’s code” arguments are pointless in an era where the game has become a business. They’re all multi-millionaires and they’re all walking investments. Risking another human-being’s livelihood and life in general is f’n pathetic, period.

  12. buffalo65 - Aug 18, 2013 at 8:58 PM

Boston should applaud A-rod. Yanks are a mess with him there. His own teammates hate him.

  13. brewcrewfan54 - Aug 18, 2013 at 8:59 PM

The injustice was the warning because even though ARod is a gigantic dickbag and deserved what he got the Yanks can’t retaliate with CC getting tossed.

    • theolgoaler - Aug 18, 2013 at 9:06 PM

Nah, just hit somebody with a breaking ball – the ump will let that slide.

      • brewcrewfan54 - Aug 18, 2013 at 9:09 PM

Breaking balls don’t send the message.

  14. randygnyc - Aug 18, 2013 at 9:04 PM

Girardi should’ve pounded Dempster into pulp, just on principle. Now, unfortunately, late in the game, pedey has got to wear one in the cheekbone.

  15. brooma - Aug 18, 2013 at 9:06 PM

A bad call by the umpire to keep the pitcher in the game and eject Girardi. I am disgusted by the fans in the Stadiums this season. Booing players in New York at the All-Star Game and cheering for pitchers who intentionally hit other players. Shame on you.

  16. jumbro10 - Aug 18, 2013 at 9:11 PM

Sorry, i have to say Kudos to dempster. Hate both teams but glad another player is upset at the image that a-roid has put on them all.

    • unclemosesgreen - Aug 18, 2013 at 9:13 PM

Kudos to Dempster if he does that in the 8th inning with a 5-0 lead.

That’s a guy he could get out who scored a run and it’s a tie game as I type. Not smart, not team. Winning comes first.

    • rbj1 - Aug 18, 2013 at 9:20 PM

So you’re ok with sanctimonious teammates of Big Pedi & pregnant Manny? There’s a long list of dirty players, teams and sports. And then let’s get into the Arts. . .

    • eatitfanboy - Aug 18, 2013 at 10:11 PM

Yes, because it takes such big balls for an AL pitcher, who doesn’t have to hit, to throw a baseball at another player. What kind of girl attacks someone in a way they can’t be held accountable for? You have a problem with Arod? Confront him in the tunnel after the game. Don’t hide behind a rule book that prevents anyone from retaliating against you.

  17. psuorioles - Aug 18, 2013 at 9:16 PM

Not an ARod fan, but tht was a bush move on Dempster. You had your shot, but missed on the first pitch. I get why ARod is hated by fans, but funny how Sox fans forget Ortiz also used.

    • yanks33 - Aug 18, 2013 at 9:23 PM

Yea they tend to forget that Ortiz tested positive for the same bs

  18. banger60 - Aug 18, 2013 at 9:16 PM

the best part of this It took chumpster 4 pitches to hit him!

  19. flip916 - Aug 18, 2013 at 9:20 PM

It’s like nobody here knows how baseball works. You all should have expected someone on Boston to take a shot at A-Rod, and you should all expect it to happen again by a team other than Boston. Disrespect the game and you get pitched at. It’s always been like that and hopefully it always will be. To say that Boston loses some class because of this is just silly. They gained respect in my book and as an A’s fan I hate the Red Sox. Braun will be pitched at too when he comes back. Duh. Quit acting like this was a shocking event. Act like you know baseball. It’s funny it took Dempster 4 tries tho. He looked as silly as all the haters on here.

    • brewcrewfan54 - Aug 18, 2013 at 9:31 PM

While I generally agree with the premise of you statement a lot of these guys embarass tje sport by being general scumbags on a lot of occasions that don’t happen to make the papers.

    • psuorioles - Aug 18, 2013 at 9:33 PM

And Bartolo Colon should get drilled as well when he plays a NL team, you know, for disrespecting the game…

    • apmn - Aug 18, 2013 at 9:41 PM

See, Dempster does not get to be the guy to do this. He played during the era in which all of this BS went down. He knew that guys were taking PEDs and he never did anything about it. Now he wants to be The Man against PED users by plunking A-Rod? Sorry, that is just hypocritical.

    • eatitfanboy - Aug 18, 2013 at 10:12 PM

You mean the way Ortiz disrespected the sport by using PEDs?

  20. brooklynboy48 - Aug 18, 2013 at 9:22 PM

Dempster should have hit ARat in face and started his suspension for the length of the coma. Arat is the most disreputable player of the PED era,

  21. amehta256 - Aug 18, 2013 at 9:28 PM

Dumpster should be ejected, so easy to hit a guy when you don’t bat.

  22. km9000 - Aug 18, 2013 at 9:31 PM

Minwax sure is gonna get their money’s worth.

  23. metitometin - Aug 18, 2013 at 9:32 PM

Ryan Dempster is my new hero. A-Rod has disgraced the game of baseball with his actions on and off the field and his career should be over. This is a new low for baseball having this fraud on the field. I will not watch a single second of any baseball game until this fraud is suspended.

    • 18thstreet - Aug 19, 2013 at 8:12 PM

You’ve come to a strange place, given that you don’t watch baseball games.

  24. gissiez - Aug 18, 2013 at 9:37 PM

I don’t understand. Why does anyone give a shit about happens to A-Rod? Whether you like the Sox or no I don’t see the problem with hitting a fraud like Rodriguez.

  25. bigdaddy44 - Aug 18, 2013 at 9:40 PM

Most of the pea brains responding here have no idea what this is about. It is not about A-Rod using steroids. It is not about him appealing his suspension, when all the others accepted theirs. It us about A-Rod being a SNITCH. A bonafied RAT. He did not have his people leak the names of the other players for the good of the game. He did it for his own selfish reasons, thinking it would take some focus off him. If any other player on the Yankees got hit in that manner, every Yankee would have charged the field. Whitey Bulger or John Gotti would have had this guy whacked by now. He broke a trust among players only for himself, not for anyone else’s benefit. He is A-RAT the SNITCH, and should be blackballed by every single person in MLB for the rest of his life.

    • gissiez - Aug 18, 2013 at 9:43 PM

I think we can agree that altogether he’s just a terrible human being.

    • apmn - Aug 18, 2013 at 9:46 PM

I can’t believe that the word snitch is in some adults’ vocabulary. It is such a damn childish concept. Grow up…a man takes responsibility for what he does.

      • dondada10 - Aug 18, 2013 at 10:12 PM

You know that A-Rod, unprovoked, implicated contemporaries as cheaters. His own teammate was one of them. He snitched. I don’t understand what your, “Grow up…a man takes responsibility for what he does,” has to do with A-Rod snitching.

And he just hit a homerun. Wow.

      • bigdaddy44 - Aug 18, 2013 at 10:58 PM

        APMS,
You are obviously one of the pea brains I was refering to. Your comment shows that you have absolutely no idea of the culture you are trying to make a comment on. It is a culture that is similar to a police force, military unit or many unions. The culture of these units says that you do not turn anybody in to authority, even if you know a person is doing something illegal. A-Rod’s actions are much worse that turning in a brother or sister for doing something illegal, causing them to face the consequeces of what they have done. A-Rod did not obtain this information and turn it over to MLB so things could be cleaned up. He gave it to the press solely to expose others to scrutiny for the purpose of knocking others down to diminish the focus that was on himself. The perfectly good terms of rat and snitch actually don’t go far enough in describing what A-Rod is. And by the way, you need to grow up and realize that grown men with millions of dollars at stake sometimes are willing to do whatever it takes , including cheating and exposing others to try to keep millions and millions of dollars flowing their way. Go back to your Mommy’s basement.

      • apmn - Aug 18, 2013 at 11:09 PM

We don’t have basements where I’m from because we don’t feel the need to hide underground. And stop the pea brain crap, you are just making yourself look even more like a child.

And I wasn’t referring to A-Rod’s case in particular, I meant anybody over the age of 12 who uses it. Just because it is ‘the culture’ doesn’t make it right. I don’t care if they are police, military, MLB, or whatever. It is just a bunch of BS to justify themselves when they do wrong.

      • bigharold - Aug 18, 2013 at 11:59 PM

“A-Rod’s actions are much worse that turning in a brother or sister for doing something illegal, causing them to face the consequeces of what they have done. A-Rod did not obtain this information and turn it over to MLB so things could be cleaned up. He gave it to the press solely to expose others to scrutiny for the purpose of knocking others down to diminish the focus that was on himself.”

You are aware that you can not substantiate a single syllable of this and even the unattributed report you refer to never said A-Rod did anything. Perhaps you can get your Mommy to read what was actually reported. Then you can get somebody to understand it for you too. Before you question the cognitive ability of others you should know what your talking about? But, so far, from what you have posted, I’m not sure you have the cerebral wherewithal to do find you way out of Mommy’s basement.

      • bigharold - Aug 19, 2013 at 12:56 AM

“Two things are obvious from reading your posts. English is not your first language. You are an A-Rod lover and are obviously in denial of the reality of what has happened, as reported. ”

Re-read your own post. You’ve enough typos that you might want to refrain from being the grammar police. But, with your self-assured sanctimony, .. probably not.

And, while you at it, .. get a grown up to explain what was reported by “60 Minutes”. Cleanly, .. it’s beyond you since they’re not using crayons.

    • bigharold - Aug 18, 2013 at 10:51 PM

“It us about A-Rod being a SNITCH. A bonafied RAT….. Whitey Bulger or John Gotti would have had this guy whacked by now.”

You’re holding up a couple of mass murders favorably over A-Rod?? One of whom was a confidential informant, .. a snitch. You are including yourselves amongst “.. the pea brains responding here..” right?

      • bigdaddy44 - Aug 18, 2013 at 11:06 PM

        bigharold,
Since you cannot understand the ANALOGY based on a certain type of CULTURE, I apologize for going over your head. Off to Momma’s basement with you, too.

      • bigharold - Aug 18, 2013 at 11:40 PM

You need to look up the meaning of “ANALOGY” pea brain.

      • bigdaddy44 - Aug 18, 2013 at 11:56 PM

Just because it is ‘the culture’ doesn’t make it right. I don’t care if they are police, military, MLB, or whatever. It is just a bunch of BS to justify themselves when they do wrong.

        APMS,
Just because it is not right doesn’t mean it is not the culture. Just because it is a bunch of B.S. to justify themselves when they do wrong, does not mean that it is not the culture. Those similar types of cultures are the reality, like it or not, and that includes many players in MLB.

Since you don’t have a basement, you must be in the attic. Just a bit of advice, when you take your girlfriend to Cambodia, spend more than one dollar on a lobster dinner! – J

        bigharold,
Two things are obvious from reading your posts. English is not your first language. You are an A-Rod lover and are obviously in denial of the reality of what has happened, as reported. You really need to go back to your “O.J., Ray Lewis and Aaron Hernandez are innocent” schtick!
