Ryan Braun was pretty sleazy when he tried to lobby other players for support back in 2012

We’ve noted that Ryan Braun‘s public comments about the man who handled his urine sample back when he tested positive for testosterone in 2011 were low rent and uncalled-for, what with the implication, however oblique, that it was possible that the sample was tampered with.  Buster Olney reported last night that his private comments — behind the scenes to other players whom he was attempting to rally for support — were worse.

Specifically, he was trying to create the impression among them that the sample collector was out to get him due to either anti-semitism or the fact that he was a Cubs fan:

According to sources, Braun called veteran players around baseball privately at that time to lobby for their support. In the calls — confirmed by three sources — Braun told other players that in the preparation for his appeal, some information had become known about the collector of his urine sample, Dino Laurenzi Jr., including that he was a Cubs fan — with the implication he might work against Braun, who played for a division rival of the Cubs.

Braun, who is Jewish, also told the players that he had been told the collector was an anti-Semite.

This is leaps and bounds beyond what he ever said in his public comments and is, above all else, really pathetic. Especially considering his ultimate defense to the sample was a technical one, related to collection methods, and not one where the motives or character of anyone involved was actually litigated.

Braun is said to be coming around to the idea of “coming clean” soon after the heat dies down. If he does, this is something he had better come clean on and for which he had best find a way to make amends.

What a total lowlife. He’s as bad if not worse than ARod.

    • kevinbnyc - Aug 19, 2013 at 2:19 PM

I’m starting to feel bad for A-Rod. Braun might be so much bigger of a scumbag than Rodriguez, and is getting none of the…credit?

In other news: I may feel bad for A-Rod. Someone help.

    Better than an anti dentite.

      HEY DENTY!

  3. Old Gator - Aug 19, 2013 at 10:40 AM

What?!? None of you usual nincompoops can find any “apolpogetics” for PEDs in this post?

    • cubfan531 - Aug 19, 2013 at 10:50 AM

Most PED users didn’t use their religion to try and get sympathy from other players about the allegations against them.

      • chacochicken - Aug 19, 2013 at 10:56 AM

For what its worth, Braun is ethnically Jewish but is a Christian religiously. Otherwise an all around swell guy.

      • Old Gator - Aug 19, 2013 at 11:19 AM

cubfas: I think you missed my point. My comment was intended for all the morons who come on here to interpret Craig’s support for due process as “apologetics” or even, amongst the dregs of them, “support” for PED use.

      • imnotyourbuddyguy - Aug 19, 2013 at 11:35 AM

Everyone gets your point. They just think you’re a jackoff for running to Craig’s defense before any comment is even made.

        Still incoherent?
        Pre-Slurping at it’s finest.
Maybe Craig will increase your PHT cred rating

      • Old Gator - Aug 19, 2013 at 12:01 PM

Yep, still incoherent. I don’t doubt that most people get my point. Cubsfan clearly missed it – any idiot would see if he actually read cubsfan’s misapprehension and totally irrelevant response to what I wrote.

But you’re not just any idiot.

      • koufaxmitzvah - Aug 19, 2013 at 2:44 PM

Braun’s name was leaked, as in, somebody made a direct attack regarding Braun’s health situation.

How many other players have had their names leaked to the press? Go through the list. Oh, there is no list?

Leaking Braun’s name was a dirty act in and of itself. Whomever leaked Braun’s name did so to damage Braun’s reputation AT THE TIME. (He has done enough to damage his own reputation since then, but he his actions which folks are up in arms about happened at the time someone else was damaging his rep.)

I’m not sure how Braun is supposed to react to having something dirty happen to him, but the reaction from HBT readers to Braun hasn’t really been pure and clean. There has been numerous hate posts on this site, including comparing Ryan Braun to kapo Jews.

But, yeah, the focus is Braun. Let’s all forget everyone else’s role in this ridiculous scenario and continue to harp on him.

    • imnotyourbuddyguy - Aug 19, 2013 at 10:58 AM

No, just you pre-slurping Craig in anticipation

      • Old Gator - Aug 19, 2013 at 11:17 AM

        Incoherent, per usual.

      • Old Gator - Aug 19, 2013 at 12:24 PM

And our latest gutless fraud, Imnotyourbuddy (we11 named), has enlisted the aid of the thumb harpy! I guess he thinks everyone else misses the sudden accumulation of five or six thumbs at a time and, being as stupid as he is, assume they represent any meaningful tally of opinion.

You gotta wonder – aside from coming up with trailer trash euphemisms for gutter level homophobia like “pre-slurping” – what went wrong with Circling the Bases to attract the recent migration of lowlives from PFT, PHT and Yahoo Blogs over here.

      • imnotyourbuddyguy - Aug 19, 2013 at 2:26 PM

Gator takes Thumbs Up/Down as seriously as he does PHT Cred.

Get’s so upset when he’s thumbed down.

      • Gamera the Brave - Aug 19, 2013 at 12:44 PM

I am totally mystified by the term “pre-slurping”, and the context of your use of the term.
Buddy, would you spare us some time to help me out? Since the prefix “pre” means “before”, I interpret you term as meaning “an activity occuring before slurping”. Since I assume you are referring to fellatio when you say “slurping” – do you mean some sort of lunch- or dinner-date scenario? Some sort of foreplay? Your name-calling is just a complete mess, frankly…

Buddy, you are really going to have to tighten up your use of the English language, if we are to correctly interpret your unintelligible, homophobic, bullying rants.

      • imnotyourbuddyguy - Aug 19, 2013 at 2:25 PM

      • Old Gator - Aug 19, 2013 at 4:18 PM

“Buddy” with his usual misrepresentative – gee, did that mean “dishonest” – drivel. As you are well aware despite your usual inability to demonstrate “awareness” in most of its forums, I don’t use the thumbs and don’t care about them, especially knowing that out of any batch of fifteen or twenty thumbs down at least ten or twelve are the products of the same one or two desperate, inferiority-plagued, hopeless buffoons. Children of God. Like yourself, perhaps?

  4. mybrunoblog - Aug 19, 2013 at 10:44 AM

Arod is looking better and better every day and that’s hard to do.

    So about that lawsuit…

  6. rickdobrydney - Aug 19, 2013 at 10:48 AM

What a pathetic loser Braun is, now using the race card — My God, is it any wonder why people are getting more and more turned off by this sport ????

    • brewcrewfan54 - Aug 19, 2013 at 10:54 AM

      Jewish is a race?

      • imnotyourbuddyguy - Aug 19, 2013 at 11:01 AM

        Yes, No and Maybe
        U.S. Supreme court thought so

      • brewcrewfan54 - Aug 19, 2013 at 11:09 AM

Interesting. I’ve never thought of it as such.

      • chacochicken - Aug 19, 2013 at 11:18 AM

Yes, there are several different ethnic groups that comprise the Jewish culture. Most are Semitic peoples and throughout history they have maintained enclaves in a wide variety of places mixing with the local populations. You’ll notice a surname style consistent with many ethnic Jews using Silver, gold, stein, mann etc.
Not all Jews practice Judaism but all Christians practice Christianity except Jesus he stuck with the old stuff.

Check out wikipedia’s article “Who is a Jew?”

      • Old Gator - Aug 19, 2013 at 11:23 AM

Thanks Chaco. “Semitic” is a race, “Jewish” is not. There are Black jews (like the Falashim from Ethiopia), Indian Jews who are technically mixed Aryan, Oriental Jews who are Turkic, Chinese, Japanese, Mongolian. You name it. Popular usage has its way of broadening the definition of a word with originally specific meaning until it is virtually useless in substantive discourse – “terrorist” is a great contemporary example.

      • historiophiliac - Aug 19, 2013 at 11:57 AM

        Or “Caucasian.”

    • 18thstreet - Aug 19, 2013 at 1:03 PM

Setting aside the canard that Judaism is a race …

It’s particularly repulsive that Braun would suggest he’s Jewish when it suits his needs to play the victim. Antisemitism exists, and generally speaking, people who are actually Jewish are the ones who are targeted.

  7. DelawarePhilliesFan - Aug 19, 2013 at 10:52 AM

” Especially considering his ultimate defense to the sample was a technical one”

    Apology accepted

  8. sandrafluke2012 - Aug 19, 2013 at 10:54 AM

The AL SHARPTON’s ploys of the Jews should be strongly Condemned. As a Jew, calling someone a racist or anti-semite should only be done with 100% proof. Crying Wolf is the worst thing to get rid of anti-semitism and racism.

    • yahmule - Aug 19, 2013 at 11:07 AM

      • Old Gator - Aug 19, 2013 at 11:24 AM

Thanks for a-capping “Al Sharpton.” We might not have noticed quite how imbecilic your comment was if you hadn’t called out attention to it.

      • Old Gator - Aug 19, 2013 at 11:26 AM

PS – could we perhaps interest you in a blind date with our resident Artificial Stupidity, Poor Dim One Note Harry? It would be an advance for scientific inquiry if we could observe how the 1s and 0s reorganized themselves in virtual amplexus.

    • historiophiliac - Aug 19, 2013 at 12:04 PM

I don’t know why you gotta make this about vodka. FYI, 80 proof can get you there too.

  9. sdelmonte - Aug 19, 2013 at 10:57 AM

Really uncool of him to play the anti-Semite card. I wonder if he gets a phone call from the ADL.

Moses and Abraham are rolling over in their graves.

Well, that sucks! So, they didn’t get into heaven after all.

  11. Marty McKee - Aug 19, 2013 at 11:06 AM

Does Calcaterra still believe Braun owes Dino Laurenzi no apology?

    • churchoftheperpetuallyoutraged - Aug 19, 2013 at 11:10 AM

Braun, if he is a good and decent person in any way probably owes an apology to Dino Laurenzi, Jr., the collector in Braun’s positive drug test last year.
      -Craig Calcaterra

      Reading is hard, amirite!?!?!

      • cheeks9441 - Aug 19, 2013 at 11:22 AM

Seriously, Marty. How dare you not read every word of every story on Hardball Talk!

      • churchoftheperpetuallyoutraged - Aug 19, 2013 at 11:28 AM

Seriously, Marty. How dare you not read every word of every story on Hardball Talk!

Going to assume this is a [bad] joke or else you are being as dumb as Marty.

      • jrd8523 - Aug 19, 2013 at 11:31 AM

Amazing to me that you point to an article where Craig isn’t secure enough to say he owes him an apology without putting the word “probably” infront of it.

      • Marty McKee - Aug 19, 2013 at 2:19 PM

The word “probably” is the key.

        Reading Comprehension. Catch It!

  12. natslady - Aug 19, 2013 at 11:23 AM

Braun has no idea what it means to be a FAN. You love your team, you root for them, spend money on caps, jerseys, etc. You don’t ruin your career over them.

  13. pftalk - Aug 19, 2013 at 11:29 AM

We get it, Craig. You don’t like Braun. You think he is a bad person, a liar, a phoney, etc. Do you have anything else to write about? You got what you wanted, he’s suspended. How about maybe writing about the guys that are still actually trying to make a playoff push, call ups or something actually relevant to the other hard working guys hitting the fields every day.

  14. ravenousmind - Aug 19, 2013 at 12:14 PM

Current suspension rules suck. They should be….
1 Test Failed; 81 Games + No Playoffs-even if 81 game suspension was in first half of season
2 Test Failed; 162 games + No Playoffs for life
    3. Banned for life (100 Years)
    4. No Failed Test, Self Admittion; 324 Game Suspension, No Playoffs

    • bleedgreen - Aug 19, 2013 at 3:19 PM

No failed test is no failed test. If you don’t fail, you shouldn’t be able to be punished, no matter what you admit or say. I can SAY I’m drunk as a skunk all the time, but if I never fail a breathalyzer, well, who cares?

  15. cadillacjosh - Aug 19, 2013 at 1:16 PM

I know this is awful, but I truly laughed hard when I read this today. It’s so ridiculous, what else can you do?

“No, no, guys, you don’t understand. I didn’t fail the test, it’s ’cause I’m Jewish.”

    • paperlions - Aug 19, 2013 at 1:58 PM

Well, maybe Jews (or Semites) just have naturally high testosterone levels.

  16. chiadam - Aug 19, 2013 at 3:27 PM

Easily a bigger dbag than Rodriguez. Yes, Rodriguez lied and cheated. Remind me which cheater did not lie about his cheating? Are there any? He tried to expose other cheaters, which I don’t care about in the least. He attempted to buy evidence so he would not get caught. He’s basically a giant tool, but he did not use a self-serving press conference to smear an innocent man and play the race card behind the scenes.

  17. The Grand Occident - Aug 20, 2013 at 12:04 AM

Pious fraud – a Jewish specialty.
