Jose Dariel Abreu establishing residency in Haiti

Aug 21, 2013, 11:07 PM EDT

Jesse Sanchez of MLB.com has an update on Jose Dariel Abreu, the powerful first baseman who defected from his native Cuba earlier this month and is in the process of becoming an MLB free agent:

Abreu has gaudy Cuban numbers, including the Cuban home run record (set during the 2010-2011 season). He seems likely to eclipse the seven-year, $42 million figure that the Dodgers committed to Yasiel Puig.

It really is a perfect fit.

Exactly: the Red Sox have zero 1B talent in their minor league system, at least nothing that will be ready for a few years. With them having next to nothing on the books for the coming years they really should get this done

Attention, Jim Crane: you got a lot to make up for in Houston. Getting this guy on the ‘Stros would be a good place to start.

Yankees should sign him. Give him a spin at the hot corner

Texieria’s contract kinda prohibits that. I don’t believe he projects at 3B.
