Roy Halladay is cool with Charlie Manuel getting fired

Roy Halladay prefaced all of this by saying that he loves Charlie Manuel and that he was great, but he told Jim Salisbury of that it was time for a change:

“But from what I’ve seen, Ryne [Sandberg] came in and made some changes and addressed some issues that I think were being overlooked. So from that standpoint, as much as I miss Charlie, I think that Ryne’s going to do a good job and I think he’s going to bring back a little more of the Phillie baseball style than we’ve had the last couple of years. You know, we really haven’t had that whole team effort and the whole team hustle that I think we’ve had in prior years.”

Salisbury asked him about the things that “were being overlooked” and Halladay referred to punctuality, extra BP and practice and little things like that.

I guess everyone has their own way of looking at this stuff, but ultimately it comes down to wins and losses. When there is a stickler in place and the team starts losing people are quoted as saying that a more player-friendly, softer touch may be in order to relax people. When that guy is in place and the team loses there is inevitably a call for a firmer hand.

    The average 2013 salary for a man on the Phillies 25-roster is $6.8 million. You have a job that everyone would do almost anything to be apart of, along with an astronomical salary and you can’t seem to fucking “hustle” or have a “whole team effort”? I have zero sympathy for anyone on that team.

      Average salary doesn’t tell the story of this team, though.

      $40 million to Halladay and Howard, who have been injured and ineffective for several years. Another $5 million for Mike Adams, who was injured and out for the season in June. Another $29 million to Papelbon, Rollins, and Ruiz, who aren’t very productive at this stage of their age decline curve. Hamels, getting $19.5 million, was pretty bad early in the season but seems to have turned it around. Add in Cliff Lee, who’s been very good, being paid $25 million and you’ve got the vast majority of the payroll tied up in very few guys. Most of the Phillies players who’ve gotten a lot of playing time this season are getting near the league minimum.

      Which is to say, if Halladay knows from the inside that guys aren’t hustling, I have no reason to disbelieve him, and maybe changing managers will help that. But with the roster they had this season, it would’ve taken absolutely everything going right to even be competitive, and health means that hasn’t happened. All the hustle in the world wouldn’t turn 38 year old replacement utility man John McDonald or a AAAA player like Michael Martinez into productive major league players.

        Mini-mart HAS to have dirt on Ruben. His presence on the 40 man roster is otherwise unexplainable.

    I agree. Now that Charlie has been ‘sacrificed’, more of Halladay’s pitches should find the strike zone. Wait a minute – “Did I just say that?”

    In team sports, even the best managers and coaches have a shelf life of no more than 10 years. After that amount of time, everybody has heard his brand of bullshit and tuned him out long ago. Time for a new brand of bullshit.

      OTOH, you can make a case that Charlie got railroaded both times he was fired. 12 seasons as a big league manager and his teams finished first or second nine times. That’s pretty impressive.

      Going back decades, the Phillies have rarely been a team to go after “big name” managers. I think that Jim Leyland was the only one they ever even seriously negotiated with in recent memory. You never heard them mentioned as a landing spot for a Leo Durocher or Chuck Tanner or whoever the flavor of the moment might have been; they’ve hired a few guys like Manuel and Jim Fregosi who had some success elsewhere, but mostly it’s been coaches and AAA managers.

    It’s a refreshing take that I fully agree with. One day maybe Roy can manage a team……..

    I love Charlie as much as the next guy, but his firing is not bothering me too much. I think it was just time. Chuck will be just fine.

    It’s a natural reaction. “Players'” coaches and managers are almost always replaced by “disciplinarians,” and vice versa. (Unless the first guy left on his own terms, such as retiring while on top.) There’s even a logic to it, on a superficial level. What we were doing wasn’t working; let’s do something different.

    The same applies at a deeper level, as well. Some managers work well with kids, but lack what it takes to get a team over the top. Some don’t trust a player until he has established himself. Except when taken to an extreme, neither of these are necessarily bad managers; they do need to placed in an appropriate situation. The Phillies are going to have to get younger, and they’re going to lose while they do it. Charlie Manual may well not be the best manager for what they’re about to go through.

    They still should have let him finish the season. Amaro owed him that much.

    It seems that one of Charlie’s problems was giving too much deference to veterans like Halladay, who he allowed to keep pitching even when he was ineffective and clearly injured. I am not sure if Halladay is the best person to make that case though.

    Love when guys that play in a max of 20% of the season’s games complain about the work ethic of everyday players. Great job on those high school kids last night, Roy. Don’t worry though, these comments will go a long way towards getting Ruben’s next contract blunder.

      Starting pitchers do a lot of work & preparation during the other 80% of the days. Your comment is like watching a movie and then saying the actors only worked two hours because that was the length of the finished product.

    Players are always in a tough spot after a managerial change. You have to support the new guy. You (in most cases) have nothing to gain by ripping the fired guy. So, it’s refreshing to hear what looks to be an honest assessment by Roy.
