Will Mariano Rivera get a live “Enter Sandman” played before his last game in Yankee Stadium?

Aug 22, 2013, 1:00 PM EDT

This is interesting:

Yes, interesting because what in the heck is Metallica doing playing the Apollo, but more interesting because if they’re gonna be in New York anyway, what’s to stop them from setting up some giant amps in Monument Park and giving Mo a live “Enter Sandman” when he makes his final appearance in front of the home crowd?

I tend not to be the sort who gets into such orchestrated things, but if you don’t think that wouldn’t be chill-inducing, please go get an emotion transplant.

    How about Mr. Sandman?

Mr. Sandman, give me a dream! Bum Bum Bum Bum!

    • APBA Guy - Aug 22, 2013 at 4:05 PM

      That was funny.

    • bigharold - Aug 22, 2013 at 8:04 PM

That’s just wrong, .. runny but wrong.

  2. thebadguyswon - Aug 22, 2013 at 1:08 PM

    Very fucking cool.

  3. Francisco (FC) - Aug 22, 2013 at 1:12 PM

but if you don’t think that wouldn’t be chill-inducing, please go get an emotion transplant.

[Looks at Script, throws it down] Dang it Craig! Emotion CHIP! Emotion. CHIP. It’s really hard to get you to work these references into your posts.

    Ok folks, from the top…
    [Twirls finger].

  4. beefytrout - Aug 22, 2013 at 1:13 PM

At the very least, they should record a greeting for Rivera and then rip into “Sandman” on stage, so it can be played on the big video screen at the stadium.

  5. Innocent Bystander - Aug 22, 2013 at 1:13 PM

I got chills just reading about the speculation!!!

  6. aceshigh11 - Aug 22, 2013 at 1:14 PM

As a huge metal fan, that would be an EPIC, EPIC moment.

Metallica may not be what they once were, but they still put on amazing live shows and are tireless road dogs.

Would be even cooler if it were actually a save situation, and Metallica started playing all their stage lighting, then have some pyro go off when Mariano runs out from behind the wall of amps…

Okay, okay…too much Spinal Tap, but still…HOW COOL WOULD IT BE?

    • nbjays - Aug 22, 2013 at 1:50 PM

Let’s hope it is actually a save situation, although I guess they could bring him in for the 9th regardless of the score. It just wouldn’t seem the same in a blowout (for either team).

  7. fanofevilempire - Aug 22, 2013 at 1:17 PM

Where do you check in for the emotional transplant because this didn’t do shit
for my emotions, just pissed me off actually.
Mo doesn’t need Metallica for any PR shenanigans, the crowd just has to give
him a standing ovation when he is announced and when he get’s the final out.

    • historiophiliac - Aug 22, 2013 at 1:20 PM

It doesn’t seem like something Mo would go for, does it? I think it would make him uncomfortable.

      • beefytrout - Aug 22, 2013 at 2:00 PM

only if they played “The God that Failed” as an encore.

      • cackalackyank - Aug 22, 2013 at 10:31 PM

I agree…I think I have even seen an interview clip where he says ‘its not me’ or something to that effect when asked about the “Enter Sandman” entry theme. The greatness of Mo is the quiet efficiency with which he has performed his craft. No flash, no dash, no brass band or media circus. (Well, compared to the media circus that is NY in general.) Results. Its been about results. Nonetheless, I think it would be an awesome send off from a “Give the people what they want” point of view.

  8. heyblueyoustink - Aug 22, 2013 at 1:22 PM

It would be awesome, except the Metallica that recorded that song was replaced by aliens proof first discovered circa June 4th, 1996.

    • scoops1 - Aug 22, 2013 at 1:28 PM

      Hey…LOAD was a great album…..

      • heyblueyoustink - Aug 22, 2013 at 1:57 PM

If by great you mean ” great for target practice “, i’m totally with you.

      • number42is1 - Aug 22, 2013 at 2:06 PM

UCH! I was at the Load concert in the Garden in 96 and it was terrible. i mean… the concert itself was excellent and you coulnd’t see more than 3 inches in front of your face due to teh cloud of smoke but the songs from Load were awful save for Unforgiven too and Hero of the Day

      • scoops1 - Aug 22, 2013 at 2:17 PM

OutLaw Torn and Bleeding Me are great pieces of music….

Both tracks are very complex and well structured…

People who hate on LOAD are clueless when it comes to music.

      • heyblueyoustink - Aug 22, 2013 at 2:29 PM

I wouldn’t argue with you as it’s been a very long time since i’ve even thought about that album, it just wasn’t Metallica as I knew them.

Clearly the music must have been crowd pleasing, I believe the record hit #1 on the charts.

      • scoops1 - Aug 22, 2013 at 2:33 PM

as I grew older and learned more about music and appreciate music, I gave LOAD a few more listens and honestly, I’d put it above Black album….

if you have it, listen to it again

    • virusgvr - Aug 22, 2013 at 1:41 PM

Dude…. People like you need to get over the fact that Metallica supposedly “changed.” It has been 17 years since.

      • heyblueyoustink - Aug 22, 2013 at 1:59 PM

My opinion changed that day forever, I waited in line at a Tower records for three hours on a hot Tuesday for that tape. Clearly the disappointment is a scarred part of my youth.

But I will never argue, they always put on one hell of a live show. Much respect there.

      • scoops1 - Aug 22, 2013 at 2:40 PM

Whisky in a Jar is cover song that was originally done by Thin Lizzy……

    • heyblueyoustink - Aug 22, 2013 at 1:55 PM

It was put best like this:

      ” Friends don’t let Friends get “Friend’s” haircuts. “

      • patswillreign - Aug 22, 2013 at 4:47 PM

        AIC Unplugged?

      • heyblueyoustink - Aug 22, 2013 at 6:29 PM

We have a winner. One of the better Unplugged episodes IMO.

  9. jeffchadwick - Aug 22, 2013 at 1:41 PM

Why wouldn’t Metallica be playing the Apollo? It’s a freaking cool, historic venue that most anybody associated with rock n’ roll would love to play.

  10. deathmonkey41 - Aug 22, 2013 at 1:49 PM

If I had a bunch of wishes granted to me- one of them would be to erase just about everything Metallica has done since Master of Puppets.

    • number42is1 - Aug 22, 2013 at 2:09 PM

are you joking? Justice and Black were probably the two best albums that they put out.

      • scoops1 - Aug 22, 2013 at 2:20 PM

        Kill em All….

it was raw, it was fresh, it was innovative….

Justice was good but poorly produced

      • deathmonkey41 - Aug 22, 2013 at 2:34 PM

In Justice For All sounded like it was recorded in a phone booth and lacked any balls. Black just flat out sucked and it just got worse from there. Whiskey in a Jar is a laughable song and shows just how far they’ve fallen.

      • deathmonkey41 - Aug 22, 2013 at 2:35 PM

That band died with Cliff Burton.

      • scatterbrian - Aug 22, 2013 at 4:42 PM

        @deathmonkey (and anyone else)

Search “and justice for jason” on YouTube. I’ve heard it is either a) a re-recorded/remastered version with the bass opened up, or b) some talented dude playing the bass tracks, but either way you will be pleased.

      • patswillreign - Aug 22, 2013 at 5:33 PM

@deathmonkey “…AND Justice For All”. you hardcore Metallica fan

    • scoops1 - Aug 22, 2013 at 2:41 PM

Whisky in a Jar is a cover song that was originaly done by Thin Lizzy

      • deathmonkey41 - Aug 22, 2013 at 2:51 PM

It was actually an old Irish Folk Song long before Thin Lizzy did it- but it was a terrible song to redo and is the epitome of how much they suck nowdays.

    • patswillreign - Aug 22, 2013 at 5:12 PM

Everybody knows the Black album is where the “transformation” started. Justice was their last album that captured the true metal in Metallica. If anybody thinks the Black album is their best album, then you’re not paying attention. Anyways, I’m glad they got rid of Mustaine…he was too good for them. MEGADETH!!!!

  11. blacksables - Aug 22, 2013 at 2:02 PM

What if the starting pitcher has a perfect game entering the 9th?

    • Glenn - Aug 22, 2013 at 3:06 PM

They bring in Mo to play shortstop for the last out. He has always had more range than Jeter anyway.

  12. ghstmnnfrst - Aug 22, 2013 at 2:35 PM

There is literally nothing that Metallica could be doing at the end of the Yankees’ season that could possibly be cooler than playing Mo’s song as he rides off into the sunset.

    • scoops1 - Aug 22, 2013 at 2:39 PM

yea…..Play it For Billy Wagner instead

  13. sdelmonte - Aug 22, 2013 at 2:36 PM

Of course, this would mean Mo pitches no matter what, which violates all known rules about use of relievers.

And what happens if that night, the starter is throwing a no-hitter?

  14. stellars - Aug 22, 2013 at 2:52 PM

Who wants a live version of Enter Sandman when we can just have Tim McCarver recite the lyrics?

  15. goirishgo - Aug 22, 2013 at 3:01 PM

More likely to happen during a pre-game ceremony, no?

  16. bucinnj - Aug 22, 2013 at 3:34 PM

Last Yankee no hitter was in the late 90s.

Unless he is injured, expect Mo to close out his last game @ home.

    Book it!

  17. ronmazzz - Aug 22, 2013 at 4:19 PM

Will Billy Wagner be there? After all he was the first closer to use it … With Metaliccas permission mind you

  18. TheMorningStar - Aug 22, 2013 at 4:57 PM

    F them sorry-ass slackjaws!

If they really want to honor Rivera the Yankees should truck out a real metal band: Slayer.

Fu’k ‘enter sandman’, that song blows. ‘Raining Blood’ is what he should warm up to.

  19. patswillreign - Aug 22, 2013 at 5:21 PM

Better not be playing Detroit that day

  20. sayheysayhey - Aug 22, 2013 at 5:28 PM

Imagine that atmosphere… Read more here

  21. wallyc20817 - Aug 22, 2013 at 8:39 PM

I”m not a Yankees fan. But let’s face it — This really has to happen!

  22. bdunker - Aug 23, 2013 at 5:01 PM
