Victor Martinez to catch his first game since 2011

Jim Leyland has penciled Victor Martinez into tonight’s lineup. Not as a DH, though. As a catcher.

This marks the first time behind the plate since August 4, 2011. Between Alex Avila coming up and Martinez tearing his ACL before the 2012 season, catching just wasn’t in the cards for him. ┬áBut now Alex Avila is recovering from a concussion and the Tigers are playing in an NL Park and Jim Leyland doesn’t want to take Martinez’s bat out of the lineup.

Never a great defensive catcher when that was his usual gig, the time off has probably made him pretty rusty. If the Mets get runners on base, you have to assume they’ll have the green light all night long.

I’m guessing they want to give Miggy a night or three at DH. He’s pretty banged up.

Actually, there won’t be a DH for the upcoming series (on the road against the Mets).

This is a dress rehearsal for an away World Series game. Losing his bat would hurt them. Also, Avila has been terrible for close to two seasons now.

Runners on your mark! Get set! Go!

Not a big fan of this idea. I saw the results last time in 2007. Jimmy Smokes took a 38 yr old 964 OPS-ing Sheffield out of the DH slot and plugged him into RF….pop fly…and a collision ensues, with Polanco’s massive melon blowing out Sheff’s knee and he’s replacement level afterwards….

Victor, never svelte or limber, is now 34, hasn’t caught in 2 years and beyond his ACL being blown last spring, he’s finally on fire with the bat. Anything to change that is a stupid risk…

If it goes badly tonight, expect Pena tomorrow.

I don’t think running is a fundamental part of catching duties.

I think the last line of the article says it all. .. if the Mets get on base

that assumes the mets will have baserunners
