Report: the Pirates acquire Marlon Byrd and John Buck from the Mets

Adam Rubin of ESPN New York reports that the Pirates have acquired outfielder Marlon Byrd and catcher John Buck from the Mets. Earlier in the day it was reported that the two had been placed on waivers and claimed by an unknown team. Now we know. In return the Mets are getting minor leaguer Dilson Herrera and a player to be named later.

Byrd has been something of a revelation for the Mets this year, hitting .285/.330/.518 with 21 homers.  Buck started the year incredibly strong but has since been relegated to backup catching duties as the Mets are giving Travis d’Arnaud a shot to be their everyday catcher.  Neither Buck nor Byrd are under contract beyond this year.  Any hopes that the Mets would hold on to them for a potentially-contending 2014 season were probably dashed with Matt Harvey‘s season coming to an end and his 2014 likely being a washout.

For the Pirates, Byrd will represent an offensive infusion for the stretch run as he will likely take the everyday role from Jose Tabata in left. At least assuming he keeps up what he’s been doing. Buck will provide depth as a backup to Russell Martin.  Neither guy is a game-changer, but as the season comes down to the end, every little bit helps.

Jeez, another guy the Mets have to wait for 3 years to come up and produce.

  5. chew1985 - Aug 27, 2013 at 2:30 PM

Ruben Amaro Jr. passed up on Marlon Byrd, who was originally a Phillie so he could sign the highly sought after Delmon Young this past winter.

Anybody know how that worked out for the boy genius of the Phillies’ front office?

    • DelawarePhilliesFan - Aug 27, 2013 at 2:35 PM

Amaro deserves a lot of criticism, but saying he should have gone after Byrd is 20-20 hindsight. The guy barely made the Mets, and was seriously thinking about retiring

      • chew1985 - Aug 27, 2013 at 2:44 PM

Byrd knows how to play the outfield.

Delmon Young, like the late Michael Jackson, wore a glove on one hand for no apparent reason.

Unlike Young, Byrd was not a mental health question mark. That alone should have given him the nod over Young.

Amaro was rolling the dice big time and he failed miserably.

      • DelawarePhilliesFan - Aug 27, 2013 at 2:47 PM

Oh, I am not defending the Delmon Young thing. I am just saying that Marlon Byrd by all accounts was washed up and done, so I can’t blame any GM for failing to go after him last winter

      • jwbiii - Aug 27, 2013 at 3:39 PM

Byrd was also bad last season and picked up a PED suspension. He’s a fraud who is cheating the game.

      • jwbiii - Aug 27, 2013 at 11:05 PM

So I’m guessing from my thumbthings that the “He’s a fraud who is cheating the game” meme for PED users is played out. I’m more than ok with that.

Will definitely bring a spark to an offense thats been pretty much flat the past 2-3 weeks. Good work Neal.

  7. sdelmonte - Aug 27, 2013 at 2:35 PM

Thanks for everything, Messrs Buck and Byrd. Good luck in what will hopefully be a playoff run. Because who doesn’t want to see the Bucs make the playoffs, aside from Cards and Reds fans.

Herrera is apparently just in Single-A and was the 20th ranked player in the Pirates system last year. Not exactly the greatest trade ever, but for a team in need of position players, any trade like this is a good one.

    • paperlions - Aug 27, 2013 at 2:51 PM

I want the Bucs to make the playoffs…I just don’t want them (or anyone) to beat the Cardinals…if the Cardinals are out of it…I’ll be rooting for the Pirates to win it all.

    • paperlions - Aug 28, 2013 at 9:13 AM

For what it’s worth, prospect hounds love the deal for the Mets. Sickels had Herrera as a top 10 pirates prospect coming into the year and he has done well this year, improving his D and having some pop in his bat. He’s only 19, but he has improved every year since being signed. The PTBNL is rumored to be a guy named Black, who has been the Pirate’s AAA closer this year and is considered a solid high leverage inning relief prospect with a big arm….if either guy is useful, that is great return for a month Buck (who is horrible) and Byrd.

  8. modellforprez - Aug 27, 2013 at 2:46 PM

he is not staying in left long once Marte comes back he will platoon right field with the other super studs you know Garrett G.I Jones and Alex Presley so in essence we are SCREWED. took for the cardinals to take first away like i take the Chun chun away from Gargantula every month or so!

The Pittsburgh Pirates are buying players…the Pirates!

Congratulations Pittsburgh…your long wait will soon be over.

  12. dondada10 - Aug 27, 2013 at 3:13 PM

Den Dekker, Lagares and Eric Young is going to be a really amazing outfield to watch, defensively.

  13. redridershoottheireyeout - Aug 27, 2013 at 4:55 PM

Good pick up for both positions, the Bucs needed a backup for Martin for a while, hopefully Byrd can contribute like he had been for the woeful Mutts.

  14. mophatici - Aug 27, 2013 at 7:21 PM

As bad as Delmon Young is, if any baseball exec had been given an either/or option between him or Byrd last offseason, I guarantee that 95% would have chosen Young. His last season in Chicago, Byrd may have played worse than anyone else ever given that many ABs in a Cubs uni. I think that the Cubs had 3 or 4 starting pitchers with higher avgs. So, as bad as many of Amaro’s decisions have been, you can’t blame him for this one.
