Video: Brett Lawrie makes a barehanded gem

Aug 31, 2013, 9:29 AM EDT

I could attempt to explain Brett Lawrie‘s barehanded gem last night against the Royals, but you are better off watching and enjoying it for yourself. Trust me on this one.

Now that’s some improvisation. Sure, we probably wouldn’t have been talking about this play if someone speedier than Billy Butler was running, but that doesn’t make it any less cool.

For all the childish and immature stuff he has pulled at the plate, he’s a damn good with the glove – even when he doesn’t use the glove.

It seems as if Lawrie has learned how to calm down and control his emotions. For example, he is much calmer at the plate. His batting average was .199 on July 26 and is now .261.

Just one of several great plays Lawrie has made this month.

We have had the privilege of watching some fantastic defenders in recent years at third, including Scott Rolen and Brett Lawrie. Seems like at least once a game Lawrie is doing one of these insane plays on defence. But last night’s play was just unbelievable.

Fantastic play. I’m not sure that jump was necessary, though.

Derek? Derek is that you? Get over it, man. Anyone can jump. Its not all about you.

The jump was in anticipation of the big bounce that should have happened (based on the first bounce), but didn’t. Great reaction time.

Those guys know the turf pretty well, was right to expect BIG hop, adapted pretty amazingly.

Wow, I didn’t realize that yelling “Check the standings cause you are still buried in last place” was such a versatile putdown, usable even when it might appear to be a complete non sequiter. Now I’m imagining all sorts of situations in which it could be used:

Boss: Your performance this year hasn’t been up to par, Jones.
Jones: Check the standings cause you are still buried in last place!

Wife: How about we just order a pizza for dinner tonight?
Husband: Check the standings cause you are still buried in last place!

Actual baseball fan: Ernie Banks was a great player who made a lot of great plays, even though he played for terrible teams.
dirtyharry1971: Check the standings cause you are still buried in last place!

      WE’RE NOT LAST!
      WE’RE NOT LAST!

Finally starting to look a bit like the player he can be.
Thanks for the pointless hate Larry.
