Video: Fernando Rodney got locked in the dugout bathroom last night

There was some drama in last night’s game between the Rays and Athletics and I’m not just talking about what was happening on the field. You see, Rays closer Fernando Rodney somehow got locked in the dugout bathroom in the eighth inning and had to be rescued. Seriously.

According to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times, Rodney was stuck in the bathroom for about 15 minutes. Here’s the account from the unfortunate victim:

“The door locked, I don’t know how,” he said. “I’m yelling, “Hey unlock this, someone’s in the bathroom.” … It was hot inside, I could only hear the crowd with the game, I can’t see what’s going on. …

“It was weird.”

You can watch the video of the rescue below:

The rescue occurred in the middle of a game-tying rally in the top of the eighth inning while the Athletics took the lead back in the next half-inning, so naturally Rays manager Joe Maddon said after the game that “we should have kept him in there.”

Funny stuff. I honestly had no idea the dugouts had bathrooms.

Most don’t. The guys just piss on the floor and wash their masticated sunflower seed husks back under the bench.

Huh, never would have guessed your ex-wife and a dugout floor had anything in common.

I saw that as it happened, and it was interesting (and a little pathetic) that Rays announcers Dwayne Staats and Brian Anderson didn’t mention the name of the room Rodney had been locked in. Maybe they figured it was obvious, but it seems to me that they thought it would be beyond the pale to say Rodney had been locked in the loo. That said, I should add that Staats has the best voice of all play-by-play men I have heard. (And I’ve heard almost all of them, thanks to MLB.TV.)

Maybe the latch was crooked like Rodney’s hat always is.

There have been a few games this year where it would have been better if Rodney had been locked in the bathroom.

That was too funny – Rodney certainly seems like he keeps the dugout loose.

He should go get checked out for a tumor after hanging out so long in the raw sewage room.

That is funny. First Price in traffic (bad advance work by the Rays-seriously, not knowing the Bay Bridge was closed on Labor Day weekend) the Admiral Rodney all at sea in the john.

It would have been better if he had gotten trapped in the space between two hotel rooms.

    This has happened before.

Sorry but this would have never happened to Fernando Rey.

So he says the lock was broke. Perhaps he was in there playing with his plantain?

If only he’d had his bow and arrow with him.
