The Angels can drop the “of Anaheim” from their name under their new lease

Angels Stadium

UPDATE: The original version of this post linked to a story that, it has been brought to our attention, was blatantly plagiarized from Bill Shaikin’s report from the Los Angeles Times. Apologies to Shaikin and the Times. And shame on the jerks who just reprinted their article without link or attribution.

The Angels have been negotiating with the Anaheim city council over their lease at the Big A. Which I don’t think is “The Big A” anymore, but old habits die hard. Anyway: under the lease the Angels had the right to relocate after 2016 if they wanted. It’s now been extended to 2019 as Arte Moreno and the city continue to negotiate over a longer term arrangement.

The more interesting part for those of us without a stake in the lease: the Angels can now drop the “of Anaheim” from their name if they want to:

Another portion of the lease that will energize fans is that Anaheim is giving up it’s stake to the Halos name. In the past, the Angels were required to have “Anaheim” in their name, hence the “of Anaheim” in their title. In it’s current state, Moreno can remove the suffix and simply call his club the Los Angeles Angels.

They’ve been the Los Angeles Angels. The California Angels. The Anaheim Angels. The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. At this point, it really doesn’t matter where they say they’re from. We know where the ballpark is. I just regret that they didn’t go with “The O.C. Angels” at some point. They coulda ridden some temporary pop culture wave with that about ten years ago. Alas.

As an Angels fan, they should drop both “Los Angeles” and “of Anaheim” and slap on the “California”

    • jarathen - Sep 4, 2013 at 3:16 PM

As one myself, I wholeheartedly agree.

    • Minoring In Baseball - Sep 4, 2013 at 9:30 PM

Just about every baseball fan would agree with you. California Angels it should be.

Come on Arte! Let the fans vote! California or Los Angeles. Think about it Arte! You would be able to claim fans from San Diego to the Oregon border! Seems like a no brainer. You could put billboards all over the state!

    • moogro - Sep 5, 2013 at 5:29 PM

This is one of my favorite threads ever. Adding Los Angeles to their name is clearly stupid, as no one likes or wants it, especially most fans of the Angels. For those outside of California, you should know that it is not necessary for marketing. Everyone knows where Anaheim is, and what it means to travel there for a game or other entertainment. Anaheim does not need any help. Tacking on the Los Angeles name is painful and incoherent, and I’m glad everyone here mocks it viciously and relentlessly. It is also cursing the Angels, who will never win again with Los Angeles in their team name, unless they go Spanish full time. Go Angels Angels of Anaheim!

    • kombayn - May 9, 2014 at 4:32 AM

They need to go back to the California Angels and bring back the “CA” logo. People all over Southern California rock those hats, as it tells you that you’re from California and Los Angeles County or Orange County with the Halo A.

I live in Los Angeles County and grew up an Angels fan, I didn’t live in LA proper and wanted to be different by liking the Angels. They have a rich history and I hated when Moreno changed the team names to the “Los Angeles Angels”, it’s dumb. Unless you move to LA, don’t call them that.

      Bring back the CALIFORNIA ANGELS!

  2. bfunk1978 - Sep 4, 2013 at 2:10 PM

    “The O.C. Angels”

    Don’t call it that.

  3. scoutsaysweitersisabust - Sep 4, 2013 at 2:19 PM

The O. C. Angels of Anaheim from Los Angeles California who plays in Angel Stadium of Anaheim California.

    Fit that on a T-Shirt.

  4. mgflolox - Sep 4, 2013 at 2:20 PM

The way this season has gone, they should just call it “The Big L”. Fits their name change, at least.

  5. asimonetti88 - Sep 4, 2013 at 2:30 PM

Well this sucks. It sucked to have it tacked on to the end to begin with, but at least it was there.

    • jarathen - Sep 4, 2013 at 3:17 PM

What, Anaheim? The name Disney made important to pitch Anaheim as a world-class city and tourist destination? That has NO actual value to the franchise.

      • asimonetti88 - Sep 4, 2013 at 3:18 PM

Better Anaheim than LA. At least Anaheim is in Orange County.

  6. Bar None - Sep 4, 2013 at 2:41 PM

You can’t get much more redundant than The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. The The Angels Angels of Anne’s Home. Too bad it wasn’t The Los Angeles Angels of Die Engel.

  7. aceshigh11 - Sep 4, 2013 at 2:43 PM

They should call themselves the Frankie Five Angels:

  8. rcali - Sep 4, 2013 at 4:07 PM

Well, if your not going to give credit to where the team really is how about Hollywood Angels? Los Angeles already has a baseball team. It’s just as far from Anaheim as L.A. This way the Angels don’t have to be the little brother of the Dodgers and the Owner can rid himself of the Anaheim that he despises so much. Can’t imagine that makes the people of Anaheim who have been supporting that team really happy but they obviously don’t have a say in the matter.

  9. lonndoggie - Sep 4, 2013 at 4:09 PM

They should go with New York Angels. They’re neither in LA city or county; why should state matter, either?

    • elgorditodehumboldt - Sep 4, 2013 at 8:48 PM

Kind of like the NY Giants and Jets that play their games in New Jersey?

  10. NatsLady - Sep 4, 2013 at 4:32 PM

it’s it’s???? Did a professional writer write this? Poooh.

It’s obviously the wrong its, but it’s not in the part CC wrote, so blame the outfit he’s quoting. Their you have it. No, wait, they’re you, oh, wait, um, there it is.

  11. ncm42 - Sep 4, 2013 at 5:53 PM

Thank you @NatsLady! I was wondering if the plagiarizing parties changed “its” to “it’s” in order to throw us all off the trail…

  12. jeffa43 - Sep 4, 2013 at 6:05 PM

Astros announcer Alan Ashby who grew up in Mission Viejo as I did, gives the score of the halo game daily…
In bitter sarcasm.. “In Orange County tonight, The Los Angeles Angles of Anaheim in North America of the Pacific Rim who play nowhere close to Los Angeles fell tonight, and now they will travel an hour North to Los Angeles to play the Dodgers, who do play in the city of Los Angeles”.

As a Orange County resident, I say you failed Artie Moron-o.

Anaheim, OC or California are your options Artie..
We don’t say NY Mets of Laguardia do we? Ny Mets of Queens..
    Joke…

    • bender4700 - Sep 4, 2013 at 11:47 PM

      Really?

You mention NY Mets. So we’ll stick with the New York teams. NY Giants and NY Jets play in NJ. Why NY? Cos its the BIGGER market. Your argument doesn’t hold water. Dallas Cowboys do not play in Dallas. So should the Cowboys be the Arlington Cowboys, they would have been the Irving Cowboys. It’s not a 2 minute drive from Arlington to Dallas.

California Angels is totally lame. Anaheim Angels is not that great, who knows where or what Anaheim is? It’s called marketing.

      • sabatimus - Sep 5, 2013 at 2:45 PM

The city in the team’s name ought to at least reflect, I dunno, the city in which they play? And do you really think fans give a rat’s whisker whether they’re called California or Anaheim as long as the team is winning?

  13. yahmule - Sep 4, 2013 at 6:46 PM

What was wrong with The The Angels Angels of Anaheim?

I thought it was very thorough.

  14. kpow55 - Sep 4, 2013 at 6:49 PM

Detroit Pistons play in Auburn Hills
Tampa Rays play in St Peterberg
    Dallas Cowboys play in Arlington
Washington Redskins play in Landover, MD
    NY Giants play in NJ
    NY Jets play in NJ
Buffalo Bills play in Orchard Park
    Phoenix Coyotes play in Glendale

They pick the biggest name close to their local so people outside of the area have a point of reference. Kind of like traveling abroad, if you tell someone I grew up in Rancho Cucamonga, no one knows where it is, if you say LA, they get it.

It was LA in 1960s, go back to that and stick with it if you have to change.

    • enterprisingphilanthropy - Sep 4, 2013 at 7:30 PM

You forgot to mention the Green Bay Packers.

        Gringoes of America.

    • lonndoggie - Sep 5, 2013 at 2:29 PM

It was LA in the 60’s when they played in LA. When they moved to Anaheim in 1966, it was the California Angels.

Everyone knows where California is. Everyone knows where Anaheim is, too, thanks to a mouse that’s even more famous than any baseball franchise.

      • lonndoggie - Sep 5, 2013 at 2:31 PM

D’oh! THE DISNEYLAND ANGELS! Of course!

        Done.

  15. anxovies - Sep 4, 2013 at 7:12 PM

they should just change the team name to “The 92806.”

  16. nothanksimdriving123 - Sep 4, 2013 at 10:13 PM

OK, from now on they will be known as the Rancho Cucamonga Angels of Anaheim.

  17. bender4700 - Sep 4, 2013 at 11:42 PM

As an OC resident and Angels (transplant actually).

Los Angeles Angels or Orange County Angels makes sense. Either or. I’d prefer Orange County Angels.

I think the fear is that the national audience doesn’t know Orange County is right up against LA, but the Dodgers are the team of LA proper, Angels are OC. Why not just call it that?

Anaheim is far more open to confusion than OC. So either LA Angels, or OC Angels. Either is fine, and better than LA Angels of Anaheim or California Angels.

  18. artisan3m - Sep 5, 2013 at 12:15 AM

Why not expand on a historic name from early rock by Jan and Dean:

Anaheim, Azusa, and Cucamonga Sewing Circle, Book Review, Timing Association ~ and Baseball Angels.

    It’d make a helluva team tee-shirt.

  19. sportfan2 - Sep 5, 2013 at 7:14 AM

They do not belong or play in Los Angeles.

  20. farkingjackhole - Sep 5, 2013 at 1:28 PM

The California Angels of Anaheim Hollywood Los Angeles in Orange County.

    I like it.

  21. losanginsight - Sep 5, 2013 at 2:40 PM

Right now in LA they are known as the 3rd place, rebuilding, over rated, lame duck coach, lame duck gm, no pitching, JV team off the 57 Fwy Anacrime Jalos.

  22. fearthehoody - Sep 5, 2013 at 8:14 PM

Keep it as AnaSLIME Angeles. AnaSLIME is not LA!
