Joe Mauer not progressing from concussion as hoped

Joe Mauer admitted Thursday that he’s still experiencing concussion symptoms during workouts, leaving him without a timetable for a return to the Twins lineup.

Mauer ramped up his workouts in recent days, taking batting practice and lifting weights, but that’s when the symptoms returned, he told the Star-Tribune’s LaVelle E. Neal III.

Given that the Twins have so little to gain by bringing Mauer back, the possibility exists that he won’t return this season, and even if he does make it back, he probably won’t do any catching. According to Neal, Mauer remains determined to play in 2013.

Mauer was hitting .324/.404/.476 when he suffered his concussion in a game against the Mets on Aug. 19.

Yosmil Pinto should be the Twins full time catcher moving forward. Joe needs to take a break the rest of this season and consider his baseball life at first base beginning next year. We’re gonna win Twi……

The Twins should really just shut down Mauer for the season. You really don’t want to mess around with head injuries.

What the Twins really need is a better training staff. They are horrible at diagnosing problems and no better at fixing them.

They also need a new pitching coach, but that’s a different issue (see Liriano for proof).

See Liriano for proof? Was Rick Anderson not the pitching coach in ’06 and ’10 when he previously had his best 2 years? If you want to try and boil Liriano’s success down to only 1 factor you are better off pointing to walks. Go look at his BB/9, find his best years then go look at which seasons they happen to be in.

Take it for what it’s worth. I had a concussion from slipping on ice and knocking the noggin. I felt like crap for 6 weeks… Couldn’t wake up worth a damn was consistently late for work, would be told to go one place by my manager, go to a different location and then call back the office yelling at them because no customers were there. Also would doze off in bumper to bumper traffic. It’s scary stuff man,I’m always amazed when guys suit up a week. Or two later.
