A lefty hit two homers off Clayton Kershaw

A lot of guys hit two homers in a game. Happens a couple of times a week, more or less. But Jay Bruce doing it last night was a bit more notable: his bombs were the first and second homers hit by a left-hander off Clayton Kershaw all season long.

Kershaw may normally be murder on lefties, but Bruce is no mere lefty.  Despite starting the season in a prolonged slump — and despite getting sensitive about it at times — Bruce is sitting at 268/.330/.496 with 29 homers and 93 RBI on the season. Not too shabby.

Jay Bruce is good, folks. When will the national media notice? Long before Marty Brennaman does, for sure.

*Correction. Jay Bruce is good right now. He goes through the worst slumps, and then the hottest streaks. It all averages out to a pretty solid right fielder. I have no problem with Marty B being upset when Bruce is slumping, and he’ll be quick to tell you when he’s hot.

I watched the Saturday game, and if I heard right, the announcer said something to the effect that Bruce had hit more HRs off of left handed pitchers than anybody in MLB, or else second most. Playing pool at the time and just vaguely registered in my brain, but either way it’s a pretty big reverse split. I don’t follow the Reds, but I wonder if opposing managers still bring lefties in to pitch to Bruce, or if managers go against the book and bring in a righty to face him very often.

Bruce has more HRs off LHP than any other batter in MLB–LH and RH–since 2010. Still, Dusty refused to bat him and Votto (who also slaughters LHP) back-to-back in the order because LOOGY blah blah blah.

        Wait.
Don’t you guys hit lefty, righty, lefty, lefty right now?
Choo, The Mouth, Votto and Bruce. No?

Looks like Votto and Bruce are hitting back-to-back today, and they have admittedly done so a few times. But Dusty has historically had a rule about putting lefthanders back-to-back, which is why Phillips hit 4th almost all season. I hope he has flushed that rule down the growler for good, even though I know he’s dying to move Ludwick to 4th.

The title makes it seem like its some random lefty when hes a pretty impressive slugger, granted it is more impressive since Kershaw had not allowed any HR vs lefties this yr and now is still holding lefties to a .171 avg, but Bruce hits lefties decently. .255 vs them while hitting .268 overall
